The Unqualified Hostess by Whoopi Goldberg Pdf

The legendary actor and comedian shows how to set a great table, shares ideas for unforgettable celebrations, and says, "It's about fun, not perfection!" In her own words... "It's Whoopi here and I've written this book that, frankly, is the last book anyone would expect. You would never think of me as someone with the courage to say, 'You have everything you need to be fantastic in your own house, apartment, or trailer to set a great table.' Let's face it, you look at a lot of books on Entertaining and think 'I could never do this in my house, I don't have this stuff and it's not going to look like what I'm seeing.' That's not what's going to happen here! I want to show you there is great heart in setting the table. For two or four or the kids or Halloween or tea just for you. For dinners with friends or the holidays. I'm going to tell you stories about what I do when people come over and give you ideas about what you're seeing because Honey, everything in this book is what you can do in your house. You got a bodega or a 7-Eleven near you? They sell flowers. Take those bad boys and put them on your table. You got some crazy old plate from your grandmother (or a fancy silver one)? You got little kids' toys that have been annoying you forever, put them on the table too. Who's going to tell you it's wrong? Not me! I'm going to tell you it's right and I'm going to take you on a journey. And don't forget the bathroom; decorate it too, people are going to see it. It's all at your house. Come with me. I'll show you! P.S. I know the glass on the cover is broken. Accidents happen!"

Solving a murder way too close to home, Alison Kerby can’t catch a break. If Alison Kerby really wanted peace and quiet, she never should have opened the Haunted Guesthouse. The Jersey Shore lodge’s latest polter-guest is Richard Harrison, the recently murdered brother of long-time resident ghost PI Paul Harrison. And she’s going to need Paul, because Richard’s isn’t the only murder still unsolved. Richard, a lawyer in life, tells Alison that he had been working the case of a woman accused of murdering her stepfather. When Richard got too close to the truth, he was permanently silenced. Nightwork by Anne Allison Pdf

In Nightwork, Anne Allison opens a window onto Japanese corporate culture and gender identities. Allison performed the ritualized tasks of a hostess in one of Tokyo's many "hostess clubs": pouring drinks, lighting cigarettes, and making flattering or titillating conversation with the businessmen who came there on company expense accounts. Her book critically examines how such establishments create bonds among white-collar men and forge a masculine identity that suits the needs of their corporations. Allison describes in detail a typical company outing to such a club—what the men do, how they interact with the hostesses, the role the hostess is expected to play, and the extent to which all of this involves "play" rather than "work." Unlike previous books on Japanese nightlife, Allison's ethnography of one specific hostess club (here referred to as Bijo) views the general phenomenon from the eyes of a woman, hostess, and feminist anthropologist. Observing that clubs like Bijo further a kind of masculinity dependent on the gestures and labors of women, Allison seeks to uncover connections between such behavior and other social, economic, sexual, and gendered relations. She argues that Japanese corporate nightlife enables and institutionalizes a particular form of ritualized male dominance: in paying for this entertainment, Japanese corporations not only give their male workers a self-image as phallic man, but also develop relationships to work that are unconditional and unbreakable. This is a book that will appeal to anyone interested in gender roles or in contemporary Japanese society.

Tokyo Hostess by Clare Campbell Pdf

*** THE BOOK BEHIND THE MAJOR NETFLIX DOCUMENTARY: MISSING: THE LUCIE BLACKMAN CASE *** In summer 2000, Lucie Blackman arrived in Tokyo to work as a nightclub hostess. Pretty, blonde, 21 years old, Lucie was a prized 'gaijin girl' (Western girl) whose job it was to serve drinks to Japanese businessmen, light their cigarettes, flirt. Lucie thought the job would be fun and glamorous; a great way of earning a lot of money quickly. But she did not know that behind the lights and excitement of Tokyo's nightclub scene lies a terrible darkness. Many beautiful Western girls have found themselves lured into performing sexual acts for money, seeing their job slowly change from nightclub hostess into that of high-class prostitute. Although Lucie never took this path, her glamorous adventure ended even more tragically - businessman Joji Obara was convicted of dismembering and abandoning her body. In this groundbreaking, authoritative account of Lucie's life and death, Clare Campbell lifts the lid on the often horrifyingly sleazy world of Tokyo nightclubs.

The Hostess by Tracy McNulty Pdf

The evolution of the idea of hospitality can be traced alongside the development of Western civilization. Etymologically, the host is the "master," but this identity is established through expropriation and loss--the best host is the one who gives the most, ultimately relinquishing what defines him as master. In The Hostess, Tracy McNulty asks, What are the implications for personhood of sharing a person--a wife or daughter--as an act of hospitality? In many traditions, the hostess is viewed not as a subject but as the master's property. A foreign presence that both sustains and undercuts him, the hostess embodies the interplay of self and other within the host's own identity. Here McNulty combines critical readings of the Bible and Pierre Klossowski's trilogy The Laws of Hospitality with analyses of exogamous marital exchange, theological works from the Talmud to Aquinas, the writings of Kant and Nietzsche, and the theory of femininity in the work of Freud and Lacan. Ultimately, she contends, hospitality involves the boundary between the proper and the improper, affecting the subject as well as interpersonal relations.Tracy McNulty is assistant professor of romance studies at Cornell University.
