The Hound of Baskerville (World Classics, Unabridged) by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

The Hound of the Baskervilles gripped readers when it was first serialised and has continued to hold its place in the popular imagination to this day. Could the sudden death of Sir Charles Baskerville have been caused by the gigantic ghostly hound that is said to have haunted his family for generations? Arch-rationalist Sherlock Holmes characteristically dismisses the theory as nonsense. And, immersed in another case, he sends Dr Watson to Devon to protect the Baskerville heir and observe the suspects at close hand. With its atmospheric setting on the ancient, wild moorland and its savage apparition, The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the greatest crime novels ever written. Rationalism is pitted against the supernatural and good against evil as Sherlock Holmes sets out to defeat a foe almost his equal.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a classic detective novel written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, first published in 1901. It is widely regarded as one of his finest works and a masterpiece of the detective genre. This novel represents the third adventure of Sherlock Holmes, however, Dr. Watson narrates most of the story. The story follows the investigation into the mysterious death of Sir Charles Baskerville, who was found dead in the Baskerville Hall, the family’s large and isolated country estate located in Dartmoor, Devon. Despite the rumors that a supernatural giant hound may have been the cause of Sir Charles's death, Sherlock Holmes, who is absent from London on another case, sends his assistant and friend, Dr. John Watson, to investigate. Dr. Watson gradually discovers that the Baskerville family has been subject to a curse for centuries, which entails they are haunted by an enormous, demonic hound that roams the moor. While investigating, Dr. Watson and the newest male heir, Sir Henry Baskerville, unexpectedly become the target of several attempts on their lives, which only strengthen Holmes's and Watson's determination to solve this mystery. This novel is a quintessential example of the gothic and mystery genres, featuring a dark and menacing atmosphere that is a hallmark of Conan Doyle's works. Doyle also masterfully crafted the characters, including the famously mysterious and logical Sherlock Holmes, as well as the remarkable setting of the moors, which naturally creates a sense of foreboding within the plot. The plot features classic elements of detective fiction such as a puzzle to be solved, clues to be discovered, and red herrings to be dismissed, all while building suspense and tension towards the resolution that has captivated readers and inspired adaptations, translations and retellings for over a century. The Hound of the Baskervilles is a captivating and thrilling read that is highly enjoyable in its expert combination of mystery, horror, and adventure, offering a perfect example of the classic English detective novel.

The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle featuring the detective Sherlock Holmes. It is set largely on Dartmoor in Devon in England's West Country and tells the story of an attempted murder inspired by the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. Sherlock Holmes and his companion Dr. Watson investigate the case. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his intended death in "The Final Problem", and the success of The Hound of the Baskervilles led to the character's eventual revival. Sir Charles Baskerville, baronet, is found dead on the grounds of his country house, Baskerville Hall. The cause is ascribed to a heart attack. Fearing for the safety of Sir Charles's nephew and the only known heir, Sir Henry Baskerville, coming from Canada to claim his inheritance, Dr James Mortimer travels to London and asks Sherlock Holmes for help. Mortimer explains that the Baskerville family is afflicted by a curse. According to an old account, said to have been written in 1742 and describing events which had occurred a century earlier still, during the English Civil War, Hugo Baskerville was infatuated with a farmer's daughter. He kidnapped her and imprisoned her in his bedroom. She escaped and the furious Baskerville offered his soul to the devil if he could recapture her. Aided by friends, he pursued the girl onto the desolate moor. Baskerville and his victim were found dead. She had died from fright, but a giant spectral hound stood guard over Baskerville's body. The hound tore out Baskerville's throat, then vanished into the night. Sir Charles Baskerville had become fearful of the legendary curse and its hellhound. Mortimer concluded that Sir Charles had been waiting for someone when he died. His face was contorted in a ghastly expression, while his footprints suggested that he was running away from something.

The Hound of the Baskervilles Unabridged Large Print Edition by Arthur Conan Doyle Pdf

This premium quality large print edition contains the complete and unabridged original classic version of The Hound of the Baskervilles, a full-length mystery novel featuring Arthur Conan Doyle''s "consulting detective", printed on heavy, bright white paper in a large 7.44"x9.69" format, with a fully laminated full-color cover featuring an original design. This volume has been freshly edited using clean, modern fonts by human editors, not machine-scanned, contains the complete original text and corrects a number of errors introduced in the many editions published over the years. Also included are a biographical sketch of the author and a detailed bibliography of his work. Perhaps the most popular of all the Sherlock Holmes stories, The Hound of the Baskervilles was originally published as a serial in The Strand magazine between August 1901 and April 1902. The first appearance of Holmes since his "death" in "The Final Problem," it was immediately successful, meeting the public demand for the return of Sherlock Holmes and permanently securing the future popularity of the fictional detective. The story opens with Dr. James Mortimer traveling to London to ask Sherlock Holmes for help. Sir Charles Baskerville has been found dead on the grounds of Baskerville Hall, victim of an apparent heart attack. But Mortimer fears for the safety of Henry Baskerville, a nephew coming from Canada to claim his inheritance. Explaining that the Baskervilles are subject to a curse dating back to the 17th century, when a giant spectral hound tore out wicked Hugo Baskerville''s throat and vanished into the night, Mortimer discloses that Sir Charles died with his face contorted in a ghastly expression of terror, and Mortimer saw the footprints of a "gigantic hound" near the body. A series of mysterious events in London seems to indicate that Henry is in real danger, persuading Holmes to take up the case, a complex mystery that leads from the streets of London to the barren moors of Devon and the deadly bogs of the "Grimpen Mire," with a scattering of clues and seemingly unrelated events along the way to make this classic tale a thoroughly enjoyable and well-plotted mystery story, all the more so because of the presence of Holmes and Watson. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) is known the world over as the creator of the famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, but was a prolific writer who produced a large body of work ranging from non-fiction and full-length novels to a wide variety of short stories. Doyle''s first major success as a writer came with the debut of Sherlock Holmes in the 1887 publication of "A Study in Scarlet". Holmes was a popular sensation, and more stories followed. By 1891, Sherlock Holmes was enough to provide Doyle a living, but Doyle came to resent Holmes, who kept him from what he considered "more important" work. In 1893 he "killed" Holmes, as the detective and his archenemy, Professor Moriarty, plunged to their deaths at Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem". It was no mere publicity stunt. Doyle considered himself finished with Mr. Sherlock Holmes. The public uproar in reaction to Holmes'' "death" shocked Doyle, with even his own mother complaining, and as the clamor continued he was forced to bring the detective back in "The Hound of the Baskervilles", published, to a vast public sigh of relief, in 1901. Ironically, the character Doyle resented as a "distraction" from serious work would ultimately appear in fifty-six short stories and four novels, together with countless adaptations to films, television, cartoons, and modern pastiches by an assortment of authors. Other Sherlock Holmes classics available from Apex Publications in large print editions are The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, The Sign of the Four, A Study in Scarlet, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, The Return of Sherlock Holmes, and His Last Bow.

News of the latest death is brought to 221B Baker Street by a local doctor who hopes that Sherlock Holmes can solve the riddle of the curse before it claims yet another victim or leaves the hall forever empty.
