The Human Mind by Edward John Hamilton Pdf

Edward John Hamilton's "The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy" is one man's personal philosophy of a metaphysical system and human thought. Hamilton's work was written with the goal of being used as a philosophy textbook. "The Human Mind" is a massive volume that spans over 700 pages and deals with a wide range of topics. The book begins with Hamilton offering a definition of mental philosophy, which is an important place to start and helps to provide the reader with the necessary context from which to approach the subject. The author tackles a wide range of subjects throughout the book, mostly focused on the relationship between the mind and the physical body and human brain. Included chapters separately discuss human intellect, the objectivity of thought, human senses, association and suggestion, memory, the rational faculty, and probable reasoning, among many more topics. Each chapter is written so as to stand alone from the others, however the reader will likely find it necessary to read the complete work in order to truly grasp the author's philosophy. "The Human Mind" is an impressive work of modern philosophy. Hamilton is clearly a student of philosophy, as his work frequently references many of the great philosophical works of the past. Despite the size of the volume, Hamilton's style and the formatting of the book into short chapters make this an easily readable text. Readers interested in philosophy of mind will find "The Human Mind: A Treatise in Mental Philosophy" to be a pleasant read. While Edward Hamilton is not remembered as a great philosopher, the author has pieced together an interesting personal philosophy, and one that deserves to be read by students of modern philosophical writings. The Mystery of Mind by Peter M.K. Chan Pdf

The Mystery of Mind is a systematic and critical introduction to the philosophy of mind. At issue is what is known as the mind-body problem. How does a body support a mind with its brain? Pivotal to the book is the author's working out of an adverbial concept of mind that is user-friendly to the materialist cause. It is upon the strength of this adverbial concept that the author has come to hold that the conceptual gap between the neurobiological and the psych-cognitive could in fact be bridged. It is also the author's contention that despite shortcomings of other materialist approaches that have been taken in our time, an intelligible case for the truth of materialism could still be made in the form of a biological emergent two-aspect scenario, i.e., when the adverbial concept of mind he advocates is also brought to bear. All in all, what The Mystery of Mind offers is a systematic introduction to one of the living philosophical issues that have engaged the human intellects for more than two thousand years. This is also the central issue that has motivated research in artificial intelligence, cognitive psychology, neuroscience, and the philosophy of mind in our time.

Elements of Mental Philosophy by Leicester Ambrose Sawyer Pdf

Excerpt from Elements of Mental Philosophy: Containing a Critical Exposition of the Principal Phenomena and Powers of the Human Mind The nature of the human mind has not been so fully developed that there remains no demand for farther labor in this departrnent of extensive and elevated science; in re rd to which, it must be con ceded that its utility, its difficulty, an its sublimity are unsurpassed by those of an other science; while it is superior to all others, by embracing, q ifying, and controlling the entire field of rational ideas since the mind is at once the agent and instrument of all investiga tion, and without an accurate knowledge of its powers and modes of operation, we are not competent in any of its fields of inquiry, to conduct its processes to the greatest advantage, or prosecute them to their most useful and sublime results. Philosophy of Mind by George Trumbull Ladd Pdf

"This book is an essay in the speculative treatment of certain problems, suggested but not usually discussed in the course of a thorough empirical study of mental phenomena. Inasmuch as these problems all relate to the real nature and actual performances and relations of the human mind, the essay may properly be called metaphysical. Let it be confessed, then, that the author comes forward with a treatise in metaphysics--in the more special meaning of that term. I think, however, that in spite of the marked disfavor into which all metaphysics has fallen in certain quarters, no detailed apology for asking readers for such a treatise need be offered in its Preface. Indeed, the first two chapters of the book are occupied in showing how inevitable is the demand which the science of psychology makes for a further philosophical discussion of all its principal problems. The nature of psychology, however, and the nature of philosophy, and especially the nature of the relations existing between the two, are such as to make it undesirable, if not impossible, to consider in one book all the metaphysical problems which this empirical science suggests. Indeed, the whole sphere of philosophical study scarcely does more than this. A somewhat but not wholly arbitrary selection of problems had, therefore, to be made; and their detailed discussion was then brought under the one title, "Philosophy of Mind." The reasons for the selection are made sufficiently clear in the course of the discussion itself"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2008 APA, all rights reserved).
