Parliament of Whores by P. J. O'Rourke Pdf

A #1 New York Times bestseller: “An everyman’s guide to Washington” by the savagely funny political humorist and author of How the Hell Did This Happen? (The New York Times). P. J. O’Rourke’s Parliament of Whores has become a classic in understanding the workings of the American political system. Originally written at the end of the Reagan era, this new edition includes an extensive foreword by renowned journalist Andrew Ferguson—showing us that although the names may change, the game stays the same . . . or, occasionally, gets worse. Parliament of Whores is a “gonzo civics book” that takes us through the ethical foibles, pork-barrel flimflam, and Beltway bureaucracy, leaving no sacred cow unskewered and no politically correct sensitivities unscorched (Chicago Tribune). “Insulting, inflammatory, profane, and absolutely great reading.” —The Washington Post Book World

The Complete Thrums Trilogy: Auld Licht Idylls, A Window in Thrums & The Little Minister (Illustrated Edition) by J. M. Barrie Pdf

Auld Licht Idylls depicts life in late 19th century small town of Thrums in Scotland. The story revolves around the citizens of Thrums and more especially the members of one of the four churches in that community, of which the Auld Licht Kirk happens to be more committed Calvinist's than any other group in Scotland. The novel shows how a church, no matter how well intended, can become twisted by a human attempt at perfection. A Window in Thrums is another tale of a small Scottish town of Thrums, where an invalid old lady watches her world from the window. She witnesses various events in this early 20th century place where small occurrences take on great importance. The Little Minister – Gavin Dishart is a slight of frame young man, determined to take his corner of the world by storm. He becomes the minister in Thrums and idol of the community, but he falls in love with free spirited Babbie and their romance is not well received among the citizens of Thrums. As her full background comes to light, things get complicated for Gavin. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860-1937) was a Scottish novelist and playwright, best remembered today as the creator of Peter Pan. He was born and educated in Scotland but moved to London, where he met the Llewelyn Davies boys, who inspired him to write about a baby boy who has magical adventures in Kensington Gardens, then to write Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up, a "fairy play" about an ageless boy and an ordinary girl named Wendy who have adventures in the fantasy setting of Neverland.

The Best of Wodehouse by P.G. Wodehouse Pdf

P.G. Wodehouse (1881-1975) was perhaps the most widely acclaimed British humorist of the twentieth century. Throughout his career, he brilliantly examined the complex and idiosyncratic nature of English upper-crust society with hilarious insight and wit. The works in this volume provide a wonderful introduction to Wodehouse’s work and his unique talent for joining fantastic plots with authentic emotion. In The Code of the Woosters, Wodehouse’s most famous duo, Bertie Wooster and his unflappable valet Jeeves, risks all to steal a cream jug. Uncle Fred in the Springtime, part of the famous Blandings Castle series, follows Uncle Fred as he attempts to ruin the Duke of Blandings while he is preoccupied with his favorite pig. Fourteen stories feature some of Wodehouse’s most memorable characters, and three autobiographical pieces provide a revealing look into Wodehouse’s life. With his gift for hilarity and his ever-human tone, Wodehouse and his work have never felt more lively. With a New Introduction by John Mortimer
