The Idea of God (Classic Reprint) by Paul Carus Pdf

Excerpt from The Idea of God The idea of God is so variously defined that we make bold to say that every single individual has a conception of his own. There are no two alike, and the idea of God among different persons is indic ative of their character, for every man creates his God in his own image. There was a brave officer in the Austrian army nu der Prince Eugene. When once in his presence the problem of God's existence was discussed, he clapped his hand on his sword and said: Gentlemen, I stand up for God with my sword, I challenge whoever denies him and, so help me God, I'll conquer him. I hope that God will stand up for me, too, on the day of judg ment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Evolution of the Idea of God by Grant Allen Pdf

Excerpt from The Evolution of the Idea of God: An Inquiry Into the Origins of Religions How did we arrive at our knowledge of God P It seeks provisionally to answer these profound and important questions by reference to the earliest beliefs of savages, past or present, and to the testimony of historical documents and ancient monuments. It does not concern itself at all with the validity or invalidity of the ideas in themselves it does but endeavour to Show how inevitable they were, and how man's relation with the external universe was certain a priori to beget them as of necessity. The Idea of God in Early Religions (Classic Reprint) by F. B. Jevons Pdf

Excerpt from The Idea of God in Early Religions Religious phenomenon, studied as an inner fact, and apart from ecclesiastical or theological complications, has shown itself to consist everywhere, and at all its stages, in the consciousness which individuals have of an intercourse between themselves and higher powers with which they feel themselves to be related. This intercourse is realised at the time as being both active and mutual.' The book now before the reader deals with the religious phe nomenon, studied as an inner fact, in the earlier stages of religion. By the Idea of God' may be meant either the consciousness which individuals have of higher powers, with which they feel them selves to be related, or the words in which they, or others, seek to express that consciousness. Those words may be an expression, that is to say an interpretation or a misinterpretation, of that con. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Idea of God by Clarence Augustine Beckwith Pdf

Excerpt from The Idea of God: Historical, Critical Constructive We do not arbitrarily go in search of our theme as if it were a matter of caprice to select this instead of some other equally indifferent subject. Vast fundamental changes in every branch of science - in physics, biology, history and psychology, the powerful impact of present day systems of thought, as Radical Empiricism and the New Realism, and not least the clothing of this idea in appealing literary form, free from every dogmatic fetter, - all of these present fresh problems and make impera tive a re-interpretation of the meaning of God in human experience. This work aims at such a presentation of the idea of God as will enable it to function anew in the life of to-day. The Evolution of the Idea of God by Grant Allen Pdf

Excerpt from The Evolution of the Idea of God: An Inquiry Into the Origins of Religion From the very beginning, however, a legend, true or false (but whose truth or falsity has no relation whatever to our present subject), gathered about the personality of this particular Galilean peasant reformer. Reverenced at first by a small body of disciples of his own race and caste, he grew gradually in their minds into a divine per sonage, Of whom strange stories were told, and a strange history believed by a group of ever-increasing adherents in all parts of the graeco-roman Mediterranean civilisa tion. The earliest of these stories, in all probability - cer tainly the one to which most importance was attached by the pioneers of the faith - clustered about his death and its immediate sequence. Jesus, we are told, was crucified, dead, and buried. But at the end of three days, if we may credit the early documents of our Christian faith, his body was no longer to be found in the sepulchre where it had been laid by friendly hands and the report spread abroad that he had risen again from the dead, and lived once more a somewhat phantasmal life among the living in his province. Supernatural messengers announced his resur rection to the women who had loved him he was seen in the flesh from time to time for very short periods by one or other among the faithful who still revered his memory. At last, after many such appearances, more or less fully described in the crude existing narratives, he was suddenly carried up to the sky before the eyes of his followers, where, as one of the versions authoritatively remarks, he was received into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God - that is to say, of Jahweh, the ethnical deity of the Hebrew people. Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Andrew McDowall Pdf

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. The Christian Idea of God by W. R. Thomson Pdf

Excerpt from The Christian Idea of God: An Essay in Theology This Essay, like many other much more important things, was in process when the war broke out. It was finished at odd times afterwards, amid the new duties and anxieties that the war brought to the writer, as to countless others, and to very many of these in greater measure. It cannot be said to be written in view of new lines of reflexion suggested by the war. Nevertheless, its thesis is one that gains significance from recent events. If at the heart of the great conflict one finds a passion for power that took little or no account of moral considerations, it might be urged that the world's safety lies in exalting, with a renewed and serious enthusiasm, the moral values. But can there be any such enthusiasm without a deepening and quickening of the religious interest? May we not, in the last resort, trace the present calamities to a decline in faith? On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire (Classic Reprint) by George Forrest Browne Pdf

Excerpt from On Some Antiquities in the Neighbourhood of Dunecht House Aberdeenshire It was known to the archaeologist that there were ogam inscriptions in the district, two Of them being among the most important in Caledonia; and that within an easy motor drive there was a minuscule inscription of six lines Of which no satisfactory explanation had been given. This inscription they had visited in a previous year. Further, the quick eye Of the hostess of Dunecht had caught sight of some curious sculptures on a stone by the road-side on the way to the minus cule inscription; and other like stones in the neighbourhood had been shewn in Stuart's two volumes of Sculptural Stones of Scotland. The suggestion was then made that for the sake of visitors at Dunecht a sort Of guide book should be prepared, giving some simple description of the several Objects and their meaning and uses. Is There a God? (Classic Reprint) by Ilion Tingnal Jones Pdf

Excerpt from Is There a God? As in the days of Peter, men who believe in God desire to be ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you. (1 Pet. 3: It is not true that the average man is not interested in theology. It is true that the older forms in which theology was presented are not satisfying modern men. When theology presents its doctrines in simple lan guage and in forms that are true to the established facts of life, it will receive a ready hearing. The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge (Classic Reprint) by John Fiske Pdf

Excerpt from The Idea of God as Affected by Modern Knowledge Strange conclusions. When, for example, they have heard somebody called an ag nostic, they at once think they know all about him; whereas they have very likely learned nothing that is of the slightest value in characterizing his Opinions or his mental attitude. A term that can be ap plied at once to a Comte, a Mansel, and a Huxley is obviously of little use in the matter of definition. But, it may be asked, in spite of their world-wide differences, do not these three thinkers agree in holding that nothing can be known about the na ture of God? Perhaps so, - one cannot answer even this plain question with an unqualified yes; but, granting that they fully agree in this assertion of ignorance, nevertheless, in their philosophic attitudes with regard to this ignorance, in the use they severally make of the assertion, in the way it determines their inferences about all manner of other things, the differences are so vast that nothing but mental confusion can come from a terminology which wouldcontent itself by applying to all three the. The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office (Classic Reprint) by A. G. Walpole Sayer Pdf

Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices.
