Letitia Elizabeth Landon and Metrical Romance by Serena Baiesi Pdf

Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838) was one of the leading women poets of the second generation of English Romantic writers. Following her predecessor Walter Scott and her contemporary Lord Byron, she was a fluent practitioner and essential innovator of the metrical romance and exerted a strong influence on the work of Victorian poets (especially Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning and Christina Rossetti). This book analyses Landon's poetics, with particular reference to the close relationship between the narrative poem as literary genre and its gender implications. Landon was both an eclectic writer and a literary businesswoman: she was an extremely effective promoter of her literary work in order to support her independent life in London. Furthermore she was the editor of several annuals and gift-books, wrote for magazines, and published numerous poems, novels, and editorials. Her active life and mysterious and premature death in Africa attracted the curiosity of many biographers during the twentieth century, but only in recent times has critical attention been paid to her rich literary output. This volume aims to discuss and analyse the work of a talented artist whose metrical romance strongly influenced the poetics of late Romanticism, and prefigured a highly successful genre widely adopted during the Victorian age: the dramatic monologue.

Romantic Women Poets by Anonim Pdf

Romantic Women Poets: Genre and Gender focuses on the part played by women poets in the creation of the literary canon in the Romantic period in Britain. Its thirteen essays enrich our panoramic view of an age that is traditionally dominated by male authors such as Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats and Scott. Instead the volume concentrates on the poetical theory and practice of such extraordinary and fascinating women as Joanna Baillie, Charlotte Smith, Anna Laetita Barbauld, Dorothy Wordsworth, Helen Maria Williams, Lady Morgan, Ann Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, Letitia Elizabeth Landon, Anna Seward, and Lady Caroline Lamb. Female and male poetics, gender and genres, literary forms and poetic modes are extensively discussed together with the diversity of behaviour and personal responses that the individual women poets offered to their age and provoked in their readers. There have been several important collections of essays in this particular area of study in the last few years, but this volume reflects and complements much of this earlier critical work with specific strengths of its own.

British Romanticism and Italian Literature by Anonim Pdf

Drawing on a long-standing tradition of fictional images, British writers of the Romantic period defined and constructed Italy as a land that naturally invites inscription and description. In their works, Italy is a cultural geography so heavily overwritten with discourse that it becomes the natural recipient of further fictional transformations. If critics have frequently attended to this figurative complex and its related Italophilia, what seems to have been left relatively unexplored is the fact that these representations were paralleled and sustained by intense scholarly activities. This volume specifically addresses Romantic-period scholarship about Italian literature, history, and culture under the interconnected rubrics of ‘translating’, ‘reviewing’, and ‘rewriting’. The essays in this book consider this rich field of scholarly activity in order to redraw its contours and examine its connections with the fictional images of Italy and the general fascination with this land and its civilization that are a crucial component of British culture between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

A LEGEND OF THE RHINE. Oh, Heaven I the deep fidelity of lore I Where, like a courser starting from the spur, Rushes the deep-blue current of the Rhine, A little island rests; green cypresses Are its chief growth, bending their heavy boughs O'er grey stones marking long-forgotten graves. A convent once stood here; and yet remain Relics of other times, pillars and walls, Worn-away and discoloured, yet so hung With wreaths of ivy that the work of ruin Is scarcely visible. How like this is To the so false exterior of the world Outside all looks so fresh and beautiful; But mildew, rot, and worm, work on beneath, Until the heart is utterly decayed. There is one grave distinguished from the rest, But only by a natural monument: ? f A thousand deep-blue violets have grown Over the sod.?I do love violets: They tell the history of woman's love; They open with the earliest breath of spring; Lead a sweet life of perfume, dew, and light; And, if they perish, perish with a sigh Delicious as that life. On the hot June They shed no perfume: the flowers may remain, But the rich breathing of their leaves is past: ? Like woman, they have lost their loveliest gift, When yielding to the fiery hour of passion: The violet breath of love is purity. - On the shore opposite, a tower stands In ruins, with a mourning-robe of moss Hung on the grey and shattered walls, which fling A shadow on the waters; it comes o'er The waves, all bright with sunshine, like the gloom Adversity throws on the heart's young gladness. I saw the river on a summer eve: The sun was setting over fields of corn, ? 'Twaslike a golden sea;?and on the left Were vineyards, whence the grapes shone forth like gems, Rubies, and lighted amber; and thence spread A wide heath covered
