The Insomniacs Guide to Digital Clock Watching by Joe R. R. "Rex" Shaffer Pdf

When I am to be involved in a project or some other activity, either personal or involving other people, and whether I am in charge or a contributor, my brain wants me to be fully prepared. This happens whether I am providing ideas or concepts during the planning phase, providing status or developing work-a-rounds during the implementation phase, or identifying lessons learned during the evaluation phase. The problem is that my brain prefers that I get prepared at night when I should be sleeping. When I try to escape these fits of insomnia by thinking of something else, my brain has a good memory and brings me back to preparation. I started developing Digital Clock Watching as an escape mechanism. It is based on the card game poker, and it worked! Watching my digital clock for, and anticipating, different combinations of numbers was complex enough to keep my brain occupied, but with one minute between display changes, it was slow enough that I could go back to sleep. Watching for of-a-kind and straight combinations was straightforward and easy, but flushes and straight-flushes were a problem, which was eventually solved. When I told friends about my game, they became interested and told me that I should document it. Since all digital clocks should display the same numbers at any given time, it is a single-player game, but my friends later asked whether I could make it competitive. The result is this book.

The Insomniacs by Marit Weisenberg Pdf

Marit Weisenberg's The Insomniacs is “a deeply beautiful story of yearning, heartache, trauma, and love” (Jennifer Niven, #1 New York Times bestselling author of All the Bright Places) about two teens who discover the secrets of their neighborhood after everyone else turns out the lights. Ingrid can’t sleep. She can’t remember, either. A competitive diver, seventeen-year-old Ingrid is haunted by what she saw at the pool at a routine meet, before falling off the high dive and waking up concussed. The only thing she remembers about the moment before her dive is locking eyes with Van—her neighbor, former best friend, and forever crush—kissing his girlfriend on the sidelines. But that can’t be all. Then one sleepless night, she sees Van out her window...looking right back at her. They begin not sleeping together by night, still ignoring each other at school by day. Ingrid tells herself this is just temporary, but soon, she and Van are up every night piecing her memory back together. As Van works through his own reasons for not being able to sleep, they’re both pulled into a mystery that threatens to turn their quiet neighborhood into a darker place than they realized.

Insomnia by Marina Benjamin Pdf

“An insomniac’s ideal sleep aid—and that’s a compliment. With her collage of ruminations about sleeplessness, [Benjamin] promises no real cure . . . Her slim book is what the doctor ordered.”—The Atlantic Insomnia is on the rise. Villainous and unforgiving, it’s the enemy o f energy and focus, the thief of our repose. But can insomnia be an ally, too, a validator of the present moment, of edginess and creativity? Marina Benjamin takes on her personal experience of the condition—her struggles with it, her insomniac highs, and her dawning awareness that states of sleeplessness grant us valuable insights into the workings of our unconscious minds. Although insomnia is rarely entirely welcome, Benjamin treats it less as an affliction than as an encounter that she engages with and plumbs. She adds new dimensions to both our understanding of sleep (and going without it) and of night, and how we perceive darkness. Along the way, Insomnia trips through illuminating material from literature, art, philosophy, psychology, pop culture, and more. Benjamin pays particular attention to the relationship between women and sleep—Penelope up all night, unraveling her day’s weaving for Odysseus; the Pre–Raphaelite artists’ depictions of deeply sleeping women; and the worries that keep contemporary females awake. Insomnia is an intense, lyrical, witty, and humane exploration of a state we too often consider only superficially. “This is the song of insomnia, and I shall sing it,” Marina Benjamin declares.

Chasing the Sun by Linda Geddes Pdf

The full story of how our relationship with light shapes our health, productivity and mood. 'A sparkling and illuminating study, one of those rare books that could genuinely improve your life' Sunday Times Since the dawn of time, humans have worshipped the sun. And with good reason. Our biology is set up to work in partnership with it. From our sleep cycles to our immune systems and our mental health, access to sunlight is crucial for living a happy and fulfilling life. New research suggests that our sun exposure over a lifetime - even before we were born - may shape our risk of developing a range of different illnesses, from depression to diabetes. Bursting with cutting-edge science and eye-opening advice, Chasing the Sun explores the extraordinary significance of sunlight, from ancient solstice celebrations to modern sleep labs, and from the unexpected health benefits of sun exposure to what the Amish know about sleep that the rest of us don't. As more of us move into light-polluted cities, spending our days in dim offices and our evenings watching brightly lit screens, we are in danger of losing something vital: our connection to the star that gave us life. It's a loss that could have far-reaching consequences that we're only just beginning to grasp.

Why We Can't Sleep by Ada Calhoun Pdf

The acclaimed author explores the hidden crises of Gen X women in this “engaging hybrid of first-person confession, reportage [and] pop culture analysis” (The New Republic). Ada Calhoun was married with children and a good career—and yet she was miserable. She thought she had no right to complain until she realized how many other Generation X women felt the same way. What could be behind this troubling trend? To find out, Calhoun delved into housing costs, HR trends, credit card debt averages, and divorce data. At every turn, she saw that Gen X women were facing new problems as they entered middle age—problems that were being largely overlooked. Calhoun spoke with women across America who were part of the generation raised to “have it all.” She found that most were exhausted, terrified about money, under-employed, and overwhelmed. And instead of being heard, they were being told to lean in, take “me-time,” or make a chore chart to get their lives and homes in order. In Why We Can’t Sleep, Calhoun opens up the cultural and political contexts of Gen X’s predicament. She offers practical advice on how to ourselves out of the abyss—and keep the next generation of women from falling in. The result is reassuring, empowering, and essential reading for all middle-aged women, and anyone who hopes to understand them.

This highly practical and hugely effective method offers a simple and permanent solution for long-term and new insomniacs alike. The Effortless Sleep Method gives you something no other sleep aid can - an entirely different way of looking at insomnia. The step-by-step insomnia recovery programme contained in this book doesn't just treat insomnia, it totally undermines it. This is not another dry as dust reference book written by a doctor, but a lively, empowering book which connects the sufferer intimately to one who has gone through the same pain. Many insomnia books follow a similar format: scientific information about sleep, a section on sleep hygiene and a set of relaxation techniques, all interspersed with various case studies. While in some cases this will be helpful in learning how to sleep better, for many, this will never be enough. The chronic insomniac can think his or her way around the sleep hygiene, will doubt the validity of the case studies and will fight the relaxation techniques. The chronic insomniac has been there, done that; the chronic insomniac has an answer for everything. This book is entirely different in its approach to insomnia. Yes, there are practical changes to make, but the real magic lies in the changes it will make to your thinking. Because of this, the approach in the book is not only useful in treating insomnia; once mastered, the principles can be extended into other areas of your life. What will you get from The Effortless Sleep Method? - You will discover a truly permanent solution to chronic insomnia, even if you have suffered for decades - You may end up sleeping better that you have ever done, - Discover the one simple rule which can instantly improve your sleep - Learn the secret most doctors won't tell you - You will finally understand why 'nothing seems to work', no matter how many remedies and sleep aids you try - Learn the astonishing and unexpected ways in which you may be sabotaging your own recovery with everyday talk and activities - Hear a new and surprising take on sleep restriction therapy, which explains why it may not have worked for you - You will feel empowered, optimistic, acquire a positive outlook and feel more in control of your life in general The ability to sleep soundly, naturally and unaided is the desire of every chronic insomniac. This book will guide you to rediscovering your innate ability to sleep without pills, potions or external sleep aids. When The Effortless Sleep Method is followed properly, the results can be incredible. Many people report sleeping better than they have ever done. Now, anyone really can have perfect sleep.

Exhaustion by Anna K. Schaffner Pdf

Today our fatigue feels chronic; our anxieties, amplified. Proliferating technologies command our attention. Many people complain of burnout, and economic instability and the threat of ecological catastrophe fill us with dread. We look to the past, imagining life to have once been simpler and slower, but extreme mental and physical stress is not a modern syndrome. Beginning in classical antiquity, this book demonstrates how exhaustion has always been with us and helps us evaluate more critically the narratives we tell ourselves about the phenomenon. Medical, cultural, literary, and biographical sources have cast exhaustion as a biochemical imbalance, a somatic ailment, a viral disease, and a spiritual failing. It has been linked to loss, the alignment of the planets, a perverse desire for death, and social and economic disruption. Pathologized, demonized, sexualized, and even weaponized, exhaustion unites the mind with the body and society in such a way that we attach larger questions of agency, willpower, and well-being to its symptoms. Mapping these political, ideological, and creative currents across centuries of human development, Exhaustion finds in our struggle to overcome weariness a more significant effort to master ourselves.
