Certainly my own reading of the criticisms brought to bear on the book has been not only very imperfect, but has been conducted without method; and although I have taken other means besides my own scanty reading for learning what statements of mine upon matters of fact have been disputed in respectable publications, I can not be sure, nor even indeed imagine, that I have dealt with every contradiction upon matters of fact which has been taken in print to my statements. Alexander William Kinglake (1809-1891) visited the Crimea in 1854, as a civilian, and was present at the battle of the Alma (20 Sep 1854). The British C in C, Lord Raglan, suggested to Kinglake that he write a history of the Crimean War and made available all his private papers. The result is this monumental and elaborate piece of work which tells the story of the war from its origin to the death of Raglan on 28 June 1855; the conflict still had another eight months to run to its conclusion at the Treaty of Paris on 28 February 1856. These volumes between them number over 4,000 pages and the period they cover is less than a year so the amount of detail can be imagined. Volume III for example covers the Alma, volume IV the siege of Sevastopol, volume V is devoted to Balaclava, volume VI to the Battle of Inkerman and volume VII to the dreadful winter of 1854/1855. Maps and battlefield diagrams include a number of coloured maps and volume IX, which describes the death of Lord Raglan, has the index to the whole work, sixty-two pages!

It would have been no new thing to have to act against insurgents in vindication of the law, and under the orders of what had been commonly called a "Govcrnment;" but this time the law was on the side of the insurgents, and the knot of men who had got the control of the offices of the State were not so cireumstanced in point of repute as to be able to make up for the want of legal authority by the weight of their personal character. Therefore it was natural for Magnan, notwithstanding his cherished order from the Minister of War, to think a good deal of what might happen to him, if perchance, at the very moment when he was taking upon his hands the blood of the Parisians, the plot of which he was the instrument should after all break down for want of support from men known and honoured as Statesmen.
