Excerpt from University Education in Ireland And now we would ask the reader's attention to an important part of this story - the attitude assumed by the Roman Catholic community towards the new institutions. It was the expectation of the Government of that day surely not an unreasonable one, considering the essential fairness, and, account being taken of the grant to Maynooth, even liberality, of the arrangement, and further that the scheme was but an extension to the higher education of that plan which had already in the primary schools of the National System been received amongst Roman Catholics with all but universal favour - that the Queen's Colleges and their University would have been accepted by priest and people in the spirit in which they were offered And for a brief moment there was every prospect that this expectation would be realized in the fullest sense. Doctors Murray and Croly occupied then, as Archbishop of Dublin and Primate, the highest places in the Irish Roman Catholic Church: they had both from the first accepted with cordial loyalty the prinbiple of the National System, which they had aided in working, and the success of which was largely due to their enlightened efforts. They were now, with other leading members of the hierarchy, in communication with the Government on the subject of the Queen's Colleges. With such negotiators the Government had no difficulty in coming to an understanding. The statutes were drawn up, submitted to their inspection, and approved It was admitted that the securities provided for the protection of faith and morals were ample. It will probably sound strange to many people now that amongst the names of the original members of the Queen's University Senate the third in order is that of Daniel Murray, Roman Catholic Archbishop. But it is not my object, as far as I am concerned, to attribute any blame to the conductors. But let this matter stand as it may, - let it be that by an error of the Evening Mail, the diocese of Cashel has been mentioned, or that, by a momentary inadvertence on the part of Mr. Shaw, these words were introduced; still the appearance of them in the public papers has turned the balance, so as to decide me on the publication of the following pages. If I cannot reasonably suppose that they will have much influence upon others, it will be a satisfaction to my own mind not to be misunderstood on points so frequently discussed and on which it is so painful either to give an apparent consent by silence, or to engage in endless disputation. Woodward's "Thoughts on the Points at Issue Between the Established Church, and the National Board of Education" As all who have lately addressed themselves to the subject, deemed it right to offer some apology for intermeddling with "the Points at issue between the Established Church and the National Board of Education in Ireland," I may be permitted so far to imitate them, as to give a very brief history of the subjoined "Review of the Controversy on National Education," which Mr. Woodward's pamphlet has revived. When Mr. Ryland's "Observations" appeared, I noticed among them sundry misconceptions, and consequent mis-statements, of which I thought it most desirable that the public mind should be disabused; and finding that no person came forward to do this, I threw together a few "brief remarks" on his and Mr. Woodward's pamphlet. These I was about to forward to a periodical, when the "Christian Examiner" for July, and the pamphlet entitled "Second Thoughts" reached me, and furnished additional matter for comment, and additional grounds for asserting the soundness of Mr. Woodward's views, in the discrepancy of the views of his opponents. "Second Thoughts" had expanded my "brief remarks" into a review, Dot only of the pamphlets, but of the general question. Excerpt from The Church of Ireland While these sheets were passing through the press the Church of Ireland suffered a grievous loss in the death of the learned and accomplished Dr. Reeves, Bishop of Down, Connor, and Dromore, who was without a rival in his acquaintance with the ecclesiastical literature of Ireland. Up to the last, notwithstanding his many engagements, he found time with his usual kindness to read the proofs of this work for me. The essay on S. Patrick (Appendix A.) had not then been reached by the printer, but before any part of the work went to the press I had sent this to the Bishop in manuscript. I felt doubtful as to how he would receive it, as it differs considerably from previous theories on the subject. I was, however, much gratified when he assured me of the pleasure with which he read the argument. I hope it will be found to throw some light on a difficult subject. The Bishop has been taken from us, in the Providence of God, when he could ill be spared, and I deeply regret that it is now not in my power to thank him for the help he so willingly gave me.
