Changing Land by Niall Whelehan Pdf

How diaspora activism in the Irish land movement intersected with wider radical and reform causes The Irish Land War represented a turning point in modern Irish history, a social revolution that was part of a broader ideological moment when established ideas of property and land ownership were fundamentally challenged. The Land War was striking in its internationalism, and was spurred by links between different emigrant locations and an awareness of how the Land League’s demands to lower rents, end evictions, and abolish “landlordism” in Ireland connected with wider radical and reform causes. Changing Land offers a new and original study of Irish emigrants’ activism in the United States, Argentina, Scotland, and England and their multifaceted relationships with Ireland. Niall Whelehan brings unfamiliar figures to the surface and recovers the voices of women and men who have been on the margins of, or entirely missing from, existing accounts. Retracing their transnational lives reveals new layers of radical circuitry between Ireland and disparate international locations, and demonstrates how the land movement overlapped with different types of oppositional politics from moderate reform to feminism to revolutionary anarchism. By including Argentina, which was home to the largest Irish community outside the English-speaking world, this book addresses the neglect of developments in non-Anglophone places in studies of the “Irish world.” Changing Land presents a powerful addition to our understanding of the history of modern Ireland and the Irish diaspora, migration, and the history of transnational radicalism.

The Irish Land Agent, 1830-60 by Ciarán Reilly Pdf

Land agents have been stereotypically represented in Irish history as alien, capricious, and, in general, the tormentors of the tenantry. However, to date, no definite examination exists of the social background, education, and training of land agents as a group. With the exception of a mere handful of men, such as William Steuart Trench, Charles Boycott, and Samuel Hussey, land agents remain both a taboo and unknown within Irish historiography. But, how accurate are such representations? How qualified or equipped were agents to deal with the challenges that the mid-19th century, and the Famine in particular, brought? Having identified over 100 men who acted as land agents during the period 1830 to 1860, this book examines the role and function of the agency during a time when their skills and qualifications were truly tested.

Unhappy the Land by Liam Kennedy Pdf

In Unhappy the Land Liam Kennedy poses fundamental questions about the social and political history of Ireland and challenges cherished notions of a uniquely painful past. Images of tragedy and victimhood are deeply embedded in the national consciousness, yet when the Irish experience is viewed in the larger European context a different perspective emerges. The author’s dissection of some pivotal episodes in Irish history serves to explode commonplace assumptions about oppression, victimhood and a fate said to be comparable ‘only to that of the Jews’. Was the catastrophe of the Great Famine really an Irish Holocaust? Was the Ulster Covenant anything other than a battle-cry for ethnic conflict? Was the Proclamation of the Irish Republic a means of texting terror? And who fears to speak of an Irish War of Independence, shorn of its heroic pretensions? Kennedy argues that the privileging of ‘the gun, the drum and the flag’ above social concerns and individual liberties gave rise to disastrous consequences for generations of Irish people. Ireland might well be a land of heroes, from Cúchulainn to Michael Collins, but it is also worth pondering Bertolt Brecht’s warning: ‘Unhappy the land that is in need of heroes.’

Social Origins of the Irish Land War by Samuel Clark Pdf

Arguing that social movements can be explained and understood only in a comparative historical perspective and not in terms of immediate social or political conditions, the author identifies the causes of the Land War in the evolution of social structure and collective action in the Irish countryside over the course of the nineteenth century. Land, Politics and Nationalism by Philip Bull Pdf

This is a history of the Irish land question, surveying its evolution from the Famine to the eve of the Second World War. Arguably, the land question was even more urgent in the eyes of ordinary people than the national question, which indeed it came largely to subsume.

Excerpt: ... 112 ENGLISH PREJUDICES. left alone, perfectly ready to accept an arrangement which may satisfy the tenants without materially injuring them--that most of the remainder are not intolerably unreasonable, excepting only those who are either embittered partizans, or men who have become more English than Irish; and that thus the dissentients from a reasonable compromise would be reduced to a small minority. If, however, English prejudice is imported into the matter no man can say where the end will be, and we may look to have the way blocked by this Irish question to all the reforms we most want, even if much more serious results do not ensue. THE VARIETIES OF TENURE AND MANAGEMENT. I believe it cannot be said that there is any considerable portion of Ireland, not even that lying immediately round Dublin, in which the British land system has been completely introduced, that is, in which the landlord supplies the buildings, &c. necessary for the cultivation of the land, and lets the land on pure contract principles; but to some extent the system has no doubt been followed near the capital, and since the famine it has been partially introduced in a good many estates in different parts of the country, though THE THREE ZONES. 113 to a much smaller extent than is sometimes asserted. It is impossible then to mark off, even in the simplest way, anything that might be called the proper contract country; but it may be said that there is a certain area made up of scattered portions, more common near Dublin, less common as we recede from that point, in which the land is held on that tenure. In all the rest of Ireland, the tenant who builds his house, reclaims, fences, &c. &c, without law or special contract to secure him in the enjoyment of his property...

Land Reform in the British and Irish Isles Since 1800 by Shaun Evans,Tony McCarthy,Annie Tindley Pdf

Presents a comparative analysis of land issues and impact of reform across the British and Irish Isles, in Ireland, Scotland and Wales This book interrogates land issues and reform across the British and Irish Isles from c.1800 to 2021, with a particular focus on the period c.1830s-c.1940s. It builds on a rich body of work employing comparative approaches towards the 'Land Question' and the history of landed estates, drawing together fresh and original case studies which contextualise the historiographies of Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales. The contributors draw out similarities but also highlight the distinctive nature of land issues and reform programmes across the four nations of the British and Irish Isles. Key themes and issues discussed in the chapters include estate management and relationships between landowner and tenant; land reform agendas; legislative programmes and their impacts; landowner perspectives; and comparisons and contrasts between the experience of reform in the UK. Shaun Evans is Director of the Institute for the Study of Welsh Estates (ISWE) at Bangor University. Tony Mc Carthy is Visiting Fellow of the School of History, Classics and Archaeology at Newcastle University. Annie Tindley is Professor of British and Irish Rural History at Newcastle University.
