The Jumbies by Tracey Baptiste Pdf

Corinne La Mer claims she isn’t afraid of anything. Not scorpions, not the boys who tease her, and certainly not jumbies. They’re just tricksters made up by parents to frighten their children. Then one night Corinne chases an agouti all the way into the forbidden forest, and shining yellow eyes follow her to the edge of the trees. They couldn’t belong to a jumbie. Or could they? When Corinne spots a beautiful stranger at the market the very next day, she knows something extraordinary is about to happen. When this same beauty, called Severine, turns up at Corinne’s house, danger is in the air. Severine plans to claim the entire island for the jumbies. Corinne must call on her courage and her friends and learn to use ancient magic she didn’t know she possessed to stop Severine and to save her island home.

The Jumbies' Playing Ground by Robert Wyndham Nicholls Pdf

During the masquerades common during carnival time, jumbies (ghosts or ancestral spirits) are set free to roam the streets of Caribbean nations, turning the world topsy-turvy. Modern carnivals, which evolved from earlier ritual celebrations featuring disguised performers, are important cultural andeconomic events throughout the Caribbean, a direct link to a multilayered history. This work explores the evolutionary connections in function, garb, and behavior between Afro-Creole masquerades and precursors from West Africa, the British Isles, and Western Europe. Robert Wyndham Nicholls utilizes a concept of play derived from Africa to describe a range of lighthearted and ritualistic activities. Along with Old World seeds, he studies the evolution of Afro- Creole prototypes that emerged in the Eastern Caribbean—bush masquerades, stilt dancers, animal disguises, she-males, female masquerades, and carnival clowns. Masquerades enact social, political, and spiritual roles within recurring festivals, initiations, wakes, skimmingtons, and weddings. The author explores performance in terms of abstraction in costume-disguise and the aesthetics of music, songs, drum rhythms, dance, and licentiousness. He reveals masquerades as transformative agent, ancestral endorser, behavior manager, informal educator, and luck conferrer.

The Caribbean Story Finder by Sharon Barcan Elswit Pdf

The Caribbean islands have a vibrant oral folklore. In Jamaica, the clever spider Anansi, who outsmarts stronger animals, is a symbol of triumph by the weak over the powerful. The fables of the foolish Juan Bobo, who tries to bring milk home in a burlap bag, illustrate facets of traditional Puerto Rican life. Conflict over status, identity and power is a recurring theme—in a story from Trinidad, a young bull, raised by his mother in secret, challenges his tyrannical father who has killed all the other males in the herd. One in a series of folklore reference guides by the author, this volume shares summaries of 438 tales—some in danger of disappearing—retold in English and Creole from West African, European, and slave indigenous cultures in 24 countries and territories. Tales are grouped in themed sections with a detailed subject index and extensive links to online sources.

Maamie and Parpi Daley of Montserrat by Dorine S. O'Garro Pdf

The author considers her life to be a garden of miracles. She is happy that the Lord has endowed her with the insight to write about her homeland, Montserrat, the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean. After teaching for thirty-three years, she retired on July 10, 1995. She began to write eight days later when the volcanic eruptions started there. Her aim is to tell its tales since it has lost two-thirds of its land mass to the raging volcano that continues to erupt. In her three books, Montserrat on My Mind, Montserrat in the Heart of the Caribbean, America and England, and Miss Tillie, the author wrote seriously and comically about her childhood experiences in Montserrat. She is also a member of the Montserrat Progressive Society of New York, Inc. In Maamie and Parpi Daley of Montserrat, the author wrote about two New York-born grandchildren, Maggie and Syd Daley, who spent their summer vacations with their grandparents, Magdalene and Gabriel Daley, their beloved Maamie and Parpi, from pre-school to their junior and senior years in high school. Maamie and Parpi Daley taught them many interesting things about their ancestors, and the island and its culture.

Memories of Montserrat by Dr. Irene S. Prospere Pdf

Dr. Irene S. Prospere has written a beautiful anthology of endemic colloquialisms from the perspective of one versed in the wit and nuances of the island people of Montserrat. Every syllable is heavily laced with the lilt and sharpness of a happy and carefree people, rich with the mixture of Irish brogue and colonial English. She conjures the sweet memories of her home and of days past, growing up with her siblings, cousins, and friends in her beloved village of Collins Ghaut in St. Johns, Montserrat. Walking barefoot to and from school and getting up before the sun to do all her chores are fond memories of a time long gone. The characters in her stories are family, her mother and father, her brothers Wellington, Daniel, Stanley, Clyde, and Everton and her sisters Mildred, Inez and Elizabeth (affectionately called Babylyn). Her main purpose in putting pen to paper is to capture all the memories, telling stories she heard of people she used to know and her many treasured friends, so that someday future generations can read Memories of Montserrat and never forget that the most important things in life are not riches or fame but family.
