Fear God, Honor the King by Andrew Allan Chibi Pdf

From a medieval perspective, God had provided a church to shepherd believers toward salvation. It had a divine mission, a sacred history, a hierarchy of officers, and the intellectual support of respected thinkers. It provided a means for believers to interact with God. Believers also had to interact with neighbors, strangers, and their rulers. Fear God, Honor the King considers that sometimes surprisingly problematic issue. What is the correct relationship between the church, believers, and the ruling magisterial authority (whether alderman, mayors, or kings)? The thinkers of the Reformation era produced many answers. They explained in a variety of ways how the church related to, or fit in with, or was separate from, or was controlled by the temporal government of the realm, and they set into motion what became the determinant factors—social, political, economic, and philosophical—underpinning modern Western societies’ determination to keep the church and the state in well-defined autonomous cubicles. The Reformers’ rival ideas ushered in new philosophies (such as conciliarism and localism) as well as directly conflicting doctrines (such as Luther’s two kingdoms or Bucer’s co-terminus). This book examines, compares, and explains these new theories using the voices of the Reformers’ themselves.

The Fear Of Death by Nawaz Hajiani Pdf

Four planets destroyed. Three galactic empires. Two unlikely allies. One obvious enemy. Three superpowers collide at the TriStar Border. It is ten years since the Kerradite War ended. The Manadine Empire, reeling from its first defeat in more than 3000 years, has apparently unleashed a terrifying new weapon. Four planets are destroyed in a matter of minutes and the balance of power has suddenly shifted. Old hatreds have always died harder than the people that created them but the Manadine Empire itself is in turmoil. The emperor lies dead, slain by an ancient curse, and the heir to the Purple Throne is plagued by dreams that foreshadow death and destruction should he become emperor. For Prince Tusmak the choice is as simple as it is difficult: save his empire or save himself... As the galaxy heads for another catastrophic war the TriStar Border becomes the playground of spies and assassins seeking profit, and warriors seeking revenge. A blend of science fiction and fantasy, The Fear Of Death is a character-driven tale of politics, betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice where there is only one truth: if you want to live, don't be afraid to die.

At the Crossroads of Fear and Freedom by Robert L. Green Pdf

Robert L. Green, a friend and colleague of Martin Luther King Jr., served as education director for King’s Southern Christian Leadership Conference during a crucial period in Civil Rights history, and—as a consultant for many of the nation’s largest school districts—he continues to fight for social justice and educational equity today. This memoir relates previously untold stories about major Civil Rights campaigns that helped put an end to voting rights violations and Jim Crow education; explains how Green has helped urban school districts improve academic achievement levels; and explains why this history should inform our choices as we attempt to reform and improve American education. Green’s quest began when he helped the Kennedy Administration resolve a catastrophic education-related impasse and has continued through his service as one of the participants at an Obama administration summit on a current academic crisis. It is commonly said that education is the new Civil Rights battlefield. Green’s memoir, At the Crossroads of Fear and Freedom: The Fight for Social and Educational Justice, helps us understand that educational equity has always been a central objective of the Civil Rights movement.

Reading Fear in Flavian Epic by Dalida Agri Pdf

This book examines the textual representations of emotions, fear in particular, through the lens of Stoic thought and their impact on depictions of power, gender, and agency. It first draws attention to the role and significance of fear, and cognate emotions, in the tyrant's psyche, and then goes on to explore how these emotions, in turn, shape the wider narratives. The focus is on the lengthy epics of Valerius Flaccus' Argonautica, Statius' Thebaid, and Silius Italicus' Punica. All three poems are obsessed with men in power with no power over themselves, a marked concern that carries a strong Senecan fingerprint. Seneca's influence on post-Neronian epic can be felt beyond his plays. His Epistles and other prose works prove particularly illuminating for each of the poet's gendered treatment of the relationship between power and emotion. By adopting a Roman Stoic perspective, both philosophical and cultural, this study brings together a cluster of major ideas to draw meaningful connections and unlock new readings.

Images of Fear by Martin Tropp Pdf

On the Western Front in World War I, a generation faced a horrifying reality that ushered in the modern age. But in the previous century, many of the fears we still face were first given form in the pages of popular fiction. Books such as Frankenstein, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Dracula became modern myths because they gave people a safe way to confront modern fears also taking shape at that time. By looking at such varied subjects as Victorian architecture, urban crime, women's rights, and the impact of new technology, we can come to understand the peculiar relationship between horror in literature and the horror of daily life. World War I made it clear that the images of horror in popular fiction had not been an escape from the world around us, but a way of seeing deeper into it, as well as revealing the shape of things to come.
