Not illustrated. 1891 edition. Excerpt: ...were engaged with a white tablecloth, from which he had been shaking the crumbs. He had the air of an upper servant of the best class. As our eyes met he spoke. " Neatly put, sir, if I may take the liberty of saying so," he observed with a quiet dignity it was a pleasure to witness, " and we are very much obliged to you. The man was a snob, sir." " I am afraid he was," I answered; " and a fool too." " And a fool, sir. Answer a_ fool after his folly. You did that, and he was nowhere; nowhere at all, except in the swearing line. Now might I ask," he continued, " if you are an American, sir? " " No, I am not," I answered; " but I have spent some time in the States." I could have fancied that he sighed. "I thought--but never mind, sir," he began, " I was wrong, It is curious how very much alike gentlemen, that are real gentlemen, speak. Now, I dare swear, sir, that you have a taste for pictures." I was inclined to humor the old fellow's mood. " I like a good picture, I admit," I said. "Then perhaps you would not be offended if I asked you to step inside and look at one or two," he suggested timidly. " I would not take a liberty, sir, but there are some Van Dycks and a Rubens in the dining room that cost a mint of money in their day, I have heard; and there is no one else in the house but my wife and myself." It was a strange invitation, strangely brought about. But I saw no reason for myself why I should not accept it, and I followed him into the hall. It was spacious, but sparsely furnished. The matted floor had a cold look, and so had the gaunt stand which seemed to be a fixture, and boasted but one umbrella, one sunshade, and one dog-whip. As I passed a half-open door I caught a glimpse of a a small room prettily furnished, with dainty...

Marriage as Political Strategy and Cultural Expression by George Qingzhi Zhao Pdf

Marriage as Political Strategy and Cultural Expression is the first comprehensive study of Mongolian royal marriages from World Empire (1206-1279) to the Yuan dynasty (1279-1368) in Asia. This study examines the Mongolian royal family's marriage strategies and the political implications of these royal marriages, specifically, the intermarriages between the Mongolian royal house and its allies, including the Onggirat, the Oirat, and other Mongol peoples as well as the Uighur State and Korea in Central and East Asia. This book concludes that the short lifespans of Mongol royalty after Khubilai Khan were the result of consanguineous marriage and inbreeding - genetic factors that contributed to the collapse of the Mongol dynasty.

The King's Stratagem (Esprios Classics) by Stanley J. Weyman Pdf

Stanley John Weyman (7 August 1855 - 10 April 1928) was an English writer of historical romance. His most popular works were written in 1890-1895 and set in late 16th and early 17th-century France. While very successful at the time, they are now largely forgotten. He attended Shrewsbury School and Christ Church, Oxford, leaving in 1877 with a degree in Modern History. After a year's teaching at the King's School, Chester, he returned to Ludlow in December 1879 to live with his widowed mother. Weyman was called to the bar in 1881, but had little success as a barrister, as he was shy, nervous and soft-spoken. However, his shortage of briefs gave him time to write.

After thorough and detailed discussion on fundamentals Lasker treats Openings in which, he considers, the leading principles are of more deciding influence than in any other stage of the game. Next he lays the principles governing the End-Game which are generally applicable, since the middle game is influenced by end-game considerations. The second part of the book treats the Middle Game. The author shows how the various plans initiated by the various openings should be developed further. To certify a systematic understanding of the middle game, a large number of games taken from master play, is given with many detailed notes.
