Covert Operations by Eugene Nelson Jr. Pdf

Covert Operations: Alpha is the first in a series of books that will be based loosely on my experiences as a Game Master. Over the years I have GM'd many different game systems, and I have improved on each just a little in my Role Playing Game(Covert Operations.) My unique approach to role playing and to GMing has spawned this first book. Covert Operations: Alpha is a Sci-Fi Drama, which follows several characters through death, murder and mayhem after a failed covert operation. Spy is one of the main characters. After he fails to steal information from a genetics company, his friend is killed during the re-attempted theft. The theft and the death set off a chain of events that will involve most of the key players in Chicago, and bring dozens to their death as well as making many more wish that they were dead. Mix in some magic, high technology and some cosmic involvements, and you have one volatile ride. Don't blink or you might just get lost in the fray. So hold on and enjoy.

Eisenhower And Manstein: Operational Leadership Lessons Of The Past For Today's Commanders by Major William E. Herbert IV Pdf

The United States Military, the ultimate Instrument of national resolve, is centered on servicemen and women. Without effective leadership these men and women are ill equipped to succeed in combat and are unjustly put in harm’s way. The commander at the operational level is the link between national policy and action. His actions, character and decisions are of historical importance. While this paper will not cover the full spectrum of operational leadership; the most important traits of operational leadership will be explored. Additionally, this paper will highlight recent failures in operational leadership and compare and contrast them with lessons learned from two diametrically opposed operational leaders of World War II, General Dwight Eisenhower and Field Marshall Erich von Manstein. Analysis will concentrate on the specific operations of the Normandy invasion and Kharkov. The analysis will not deconstruct the operations but rather center on the operational leadership traits each commander displayed and their importance to the operation. Finally the paper will show how the lessons of sixty-five years ago are applicable today and for the future.

Persuasive Games by Ian Bogost Pdf

An exploration of the way videogames mount arguments and make expressive statements about the world that analyzes their unique persuasive power in terms of their computational properties. Videogames are an expressive medium, and a persuasive medium; they represent how real and imagined systems work, and they invite players to interact with those systems and form judgments about them. In this innovative analysis, Ian Bogost examines the way videogames mount arguments and influence players. Drawing on the 2,500-year history of rhetoric, the study of persuasive expression, Bogost analyzes rhetoric's unique function in software in general and videogames in particular. The field of media studies already analyzes visual rhetoric, the art of using imagery and visual representation persuasively. Bogost argues that videogames, thanks to their basic representational mode of procedurality (rule-based representations and interactions), open a new domain for persuasion; they realize a new form of rhetoric. Bogost calls this new form "procedural rhetoric," a type of rhetoric tied to the core affordances of computers: running processes and executing rule-based symbolic manipulation. He argues further that videogames have a unique persuasive power that goes beyond other forms of computational persuasion. Not only can videogames support existing social and cultural positions, but they can also disrupt and change these positions themselves, leading to potentially significant long-term social change. Bogost looks at three areas in which videogame persuasion has already taken form and shows considerable potential: politics, advertising, and learning.

Military Operations and the Mind by Daniel Lagacé-Roy,Stéphanie A. H Bélanger Pdf

Offering a Canadian perspective on the emotional health of servicemen and women, Military Operations and the Mind brings together researchers and practitioners from across the country to consider the impact that ethical issues have on the well-being of those who serve. Stemming from an initiative to enhance the lives of serving members by providing them with the best education and training in military ethics before and after deployments, this volume will better inform politics and public policies and enhance the welfare of the soldiers, sailors, and airmen and women who serve in singular, often harsh, and sometimes dangerous conditions. By integrating into the analysis the critical issue of well-being, this emerging field demonstrates a more holistic approach and is distinct from other fields in military, historical, philosophical, and behavioural studies. The first study of its kind, Military Operations and the Mind presents a new and helpful way to focus on the life of soldiers not only in operations overseas, but also once they return home. Contributors include Peter Bradley (Royal Military College of Canada), Victor M. Catano (Saint Mary's University), Danielle Charbonneau (Royal Military College of Canada), Howard Coomb (Royal Military College of Canada), Karen D. Baseball/Literature/Culture by Peter Carino Pdf

The Indiana State University Conference on Baseball in Literature and American Culture has consistently produced a strong body of scholarship since its inception in 1995. Eighteen essays presented at the 2004 and 2005 ISU conferences are published in this work. In "Baseball is a Place: Reflections On Building a Baseball Novel," novelist Mick Cochrane discusses writing a baseball novel, using his 2002 novel Sport to exemplify the process. Tracy Collins, in "Women, American Society, and Baseball Literature in the High Cannon," examines the ways in which canonical baseball novels are obliged to exclude women. In "'A Grim Harvest': Baseball's Changing of the Guard, 1931," Steve Gietschier shows baseball progressing from the tenuous agreements of the early modern era to become a stable urban business ready to take on the challenges of the mid-century. Joan Thomas's "Baseball and America, a Timeless Love Story" muses on the ways in which fans' relationship with baseball is like that of the lover to the beloved, irrational, forgiving, even maddening but always total. Fourteen other essays on the literature and culture of the game take on topics that include Josh Gibson and Satchel Paige, August Wilson's Fences, baseball's long connection with presidents, its even longer connection with tobacco, and the virtue of cheering Chicago's Cubs.
