The Lancashire Library (Classic Reprint) by Henry Fishwick Pdf

Excerpt from The Lancashire Library Preface is often only an apology, or, at the best, an explanation of the raison d'etre of the work prefaced. In the present instance no apology can be required, as every student of the wide-spread literature of Lancashire must have felt and acknowledged the absolute want of a book to cover the ground which the "Lancashire Library" professes to occupy. A well-known French author said that "when he wanted a book he wrote it," and I will at once admit that I have been actuated by the same feelings; for as I have wandered farther and farther in the byeways of the literature of our county, I have been the more convinced that no accurate knowledge of its richness and value could be gained until some one had prepared a complete Catalogue embracing all the necessary particulars. This work I have ventured to undertake, whether successfully or not is for the reader to decide. Under the title of the "Literature of Lancashir" I have not included books which were published in the county, or were written by Lancashire men, yet do not in any way refer to the county. Works to be included in my list must be written about or refer to Lancashire places, persons, or things. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Old Church and School Libraries of Lancashire (Classic Reprint) by Richard Copley Christie Pdf

Excerpt from The Old Church and School Libraries of Lancashire Somewhat over one hundred and thirty of these circular letters were sent out, and I received answers from eighty eight incumbents, to all of whom I tender my thanks for the information afforded, even though in the great majority of cases the information was that no library either existed or had ever done so. Some few incum bents informed me personally that there were no libra ries in their parishes, but about forty did not think fit to reply to my circular, although in every case an envelope stamped and addressed was enclosed. In the case of some of these forty parishes I made further enquiries, but in the case of others it is not impossible that traces of a library may yet be found. All the Masters of Grammar Schools to whom I have applied have very courteously replied to my letters, and from many of them. Lancashire by George Newenham Wright Pdf

Excerpt from Lancashire: Its History, Legends, and Manufactures In the following delineation of Lancashire, the variety of subjects has afforded opportunity for the introduction of full and ample notices, not only of the past and present state of the County, its agriculture, manufactures, statistics, and the intellectual genius of which it has been the parent; but also gives occasion for biographical sketches of remarkable men who have been the architects of their own fortunes, and whose labours have enriched and adorned their race: to these are added many legends and traditions connected with the crumbling abodes of departed power, with the once calm seats of piety and learning, and with those regions of romance that occupy the northern border of this county, as well as a large portion of those that adjoin it. A History of Lancashire (Classic Reprint) by Henry Fishwick Pdf

Excerpt from A History of Lancashire The enormous amount of material, printed and in manuscript, which is available for a History of Lancashire, makes the writing of a popular work on that subject by no means an easy task; indeed, when first mentioned to me, I thought it was almost impossible, by any process of selection, to produce within the compass of an ordinary octavo volume such a book as would be a popular history, and yet not fail to present a faithful picture of the county. However, I have made the attempt, and in accomplishing the task I must have necessarily left out much which many readers would prefer should have been inserted; but I trust that I have not inserted what some would wish I had omitted. I have endeavoured to confine myself as far as possible to the history of the county as a whole, and have not allowed myself to go into personal or local details except when such were required to illustrate the subject in hand. Bygone Lancashire (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Axon Pdf

Excerpt from Bygone Lancashire "Lancashire fair women," says the old proverb, but the County Palatine is famous not only for its witches, real and imaginary, but also for the memorable historic events that have taken place within its borders, for the quaint and curious customs that have survived from past ages, and for the quick life of its populous industrial districts. These varied interests are reflected in the pages of "Bygone Lancashire," by the good-will of a number of Lancashire authors and antiquaries who have contributed papers in elucidation of the annals and associations of a county memorable alike in the past and the present. Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 1 of 2 (Classic Reprint) by John Roby Pdf

Excerpt from Traditions of Lancashire, Vol. 1 of 2 A native of Lancashire, and residing there during the greater part of his life, he has been enabled to collect a mass of local traditions, now fast dying from the memories of the inhabitants. It is his object to perpetuate these interesting relics of the past, and to present them in a form that may be generally acceptable, divested of the dust and dross in which the originals are but too often disfigured, so as to appear worthless and uninviting. Lancashire Illustrated by S. Austin Pdf

Excerpt from Lancashire Illustrated: From Original Drawings The study of history may be numbered among the most important pursuits of man. By the aid of the historian, we obtain access to the wisdom and experience of ages long past, and acquire a knowledge of the progress of human society, in its advances from a state of barbarous rudeness, through every grade of improvement, to that of ultimate civilization. Of late years, historical research has found a powerful auxiliary in the delineations derived from the graphic art, of which this work will furnish many Splendid examples. By history we become acquainted with the government, laws, customs, and habits of life, as practised among many great nations of antiquity, almost as familiarly as with those which now inherit the various regions of the earth. Hence we cannot contemplate the actions of those illustrious men, whose superior wisdom first established order, directed industry in the path to Opulence, and paved the way to science, refinement, and legal power, without admitting that the knowledge we have thus acquired, is beneficial in pro portion as it is capable of practical application. Of the early state of society in our own kingdom, we know but little, and that little we owe to the scanty chronicles furnished by the Romans, who made a conquest of the island nearly two thousand years ago. From these we learn, that the ancient Britons were rude, superstitious, and brave, and led a life not very dissimilar to that of the American Indians when first discovered by the Europeans, or other savages just emerging from a state of barbarism. Lancashire Characters and Places (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Newbigging Pdf

Excerpt from Lancashire Characters and Places My ears are soothed by no melodious measures, No work of sculptor charms my longing gaze, N o painter thrills me with exalted pleasures, But books and thought have cheered my darkest days. Books and thought were the solace to which he turned from the meaner surroundings of his life, and indeed all his poetry shows the reflective and contemplative cast of his mind. His rhythm and rhyme are faultless he has'a mas culine power of expression; and besides the fulness and freshness of his pictures, drawn as they are chiefly from Nature, his skill in antithesis is equally evinced; whilst in the gift of alliteration, not forced or carried to a tiresome excess, he excels in a remarkable degree. The harmony of his lines is something phenomenal, showing a perfection of taste not easily acquired even under favourable conditions. If he is not a deep thinker, at least he is clear and to be understood; and in his best productions he has always a thought to express and a lesson to enforce. In his younger days, before the taint of drunkenness had blighted his life, and despite his poverty, his soul was bright with the noblest aspirations. Hours with the Muses is aglow with evidences in proof of this. The sentiment of his lines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
