Excerpt from The Lancashire Library Preface is often only an apology, or, at the best, an explanation of the raison d'etre of the work prefaced. In the present instance no apology can be required, as every student of the wide-spread literature of Lancashire must have felt and acknowledged the absolute want of a book to cover the ground which the "Lancashire Library" professes to occupy. A well-known French author said that "when he wanted a book he wrote it," and I will at once admit that I have been actuated by the same feelings; for as I have wandered farther and farther in the byeways of the literature of our county, I have been the more convinced that no accurate knowledge of its richness and value could be gained until some one had prepared a complete Catalogue embracing all the necessary particulars. This work I have ventured to undertake, whether successfully or not is for the reader to decide. Under the title of the "Literature of Lancashir" I have not included books which were published in the county, or were written by Lancashire men, yet do not in any way refer to the county. Excerpt from The Old Church and School Libraries of Lancashire Somewhat over one hundred and thirty of these circular letters were sent out, and I received answers from eighty eight incumbents, to all of whom I tender my thanks for the information afforded, even though in the great majority of cases the information was that no library either existed or had ever done so. Some few incum bents informed me personally that there were no libra ries in their parishes, but about forty did not think fit to reply to my circular, although in every case an envelope stamped and addressed was enclosed. Excerpt from A History of Lancashire The enormous amount of material, printed and in manuscript, which is available for a History of Lancashire, makes the writing of a popular work on that subject by no means an easy task; indeed, when first mentioned to me, I thought it was almost impossible, by any process of selection, to produce within the compass of an ordinary octavo volume such a book as would be a popular history, and yet not fail to present a faithful picture of the county. Of late years, historical research has found a powerful auxiliary in the delineations derived from the graphic art, of which this work will furnish many Splendid examples. By history we become acquainted with the government, laws, customs, and habits of life, as practised among many great nations of antiquity, almost as familiarly as with those which now inherit the various regions of the earth.
