The Last Heathen by Charles Montgomery Pdf

In 1892, the Bishop of Tasmania set sail for Melanesia with the intent of rescuing islanders from lives of fear, black magic and cannibalism. Over 100 years later, his great grandson, Charles Montgomery, followed the bishop’s route through the South Pacific, seeking out the spirits and myths his missionary forebear had sought to destroy. Montgomery explored remote shores where gospel and empire never took hold. He rubbed shoulders with barefoot preachers, witch doctors and gun-toting rebels, only to discover that the pagan spirits were more tenacious than the missionaries had imagined. Melanesians had stirred Jesus and Mary into an already spicy broth of ancestor worship, ghosts, shark gods and magic. Through confrontations with a bizarre cast of characters—the randy ethnographer, the soft-talking assassin, the leper prophet—the journey becomes a debate on the nature of magic, myth and faith, and a metaphor for the transforming power of story. The Last Heathen marks the debut of an exciting young writer who charts his adventures with passion, insight and grace.

But even if you're not interested in re-enacting the old ways, you'll find much vital information and inspiration for the practice of Heathenry as a living religious tradition.

The Heathen School by John Demos Pdf

Longlisted for the 2014 National Book Award The astonishing story of a unique missionary project—and the America it embodied—from award-winning historian John Demos. Near the start of the nineteenth century, as the newly established United States looked outward toward the wider world, a group of eminent Protestant ministers formed a grand scheme for gathering the rest of mankind into the redemptive fold of Christianity and “civilization.” Its core element was a special school for “heathen youth” drawn from all parts of the earth, including the Pacific Islands, China, India, and, increasingly, the native nations of North America. If all went well, graduates would return to join similar projects in their respective homelands. For some years, the school prospered, indeed became quite famous. However, when two Cherokee students courted and married local women, public resolve—and fundamental ideals—were put to a severe test. The Heathen School follows the progress, and the demise, of this first true melting pot through the lives of individual students: among them, Henry Obookiah, a young Hawaiian who ran away from home and worked as a seaman in the China Trade before ending up in New England; John Ridge, son of a powerful Cherokee chief and subsequently a leader in the process of Indian “removal”; and Elias Boudinot, editor of the first newspaper published by and for Native Americans. From its birth as a beacon of hope for universal “salvation,” the heathen school descends into bitter controversy, as American racial attitudes harden and intensify. Instead of encouraging reconciliation, the school exposes the limits of tolerance and sets off a chain of events that will culminate tragically in the Trail of Tears. In The Heathen School, John Demos marshals his deep empathy and feel for the textures of history to tell a moving story of families and communities—and to probe the very roots of American identity.

'The Heathen in his Blindness...' by S.N. Balagangadhara Pdf

Today, most intellectuals agree that (a) Christianity has profoundly influenced western culture; (b) members from different cultures experience many aspects of the world differently; (c) the empirical and theoretical study of both culture and religion emerged within the West. The present study argues that these truisms have implications for the conceptualization of religion and culture. More specifically, the thesis is that non-western cultures and religions differ from the descriptions prevalent in the West, and it is also explained why this has been the case. The author proposes novel analyses of religion, the Roman 'religio', the construction of 'religions' in India, and the nature of cultural differences. Religion is important to the West because the constitution and the identity of western culture is tied to the dynamic of Christianity as a religion.

The Trial of Loki: a study in Nordic heathen morality by Alan James Pdf

Iceland, about 1270 AD. A Christian scribe writes down a heathen poem composed three centuries earlier. He probably thinks the verse exposes inadequacies in the old northern gods and goddesses. But does it? Alan James' essay explores the Old Norse poem Lokasenna and was first published as a booklet in 1997. This second and fully revised Australian edition includes a new introduction and a rollicking translation of the poem. James shows Lokasenna to be "the psychological tale of the progressive deterioration of a sociopathic, perhaps psychopathic personality, from mere heavenly mischief-maker to deicide bound down on a rock for the crime of conspiring to destroy the cosmos for the gratification of his own sick monster ego" (Gárman Lord, reviewing the first edition, Theod, volume 14, number 3, 1997).

Plain Heathen Mischief by Martin Clark Pdf

Of The Many Aspects of Mobile Home Living, Martin Clark’s first novel, the New York Times Book Review wrote, “Like Nick Hornby in High Fidelity and Thomas McGuane in Nothing But Blue Skies, Clark has produced an oddly stirring portrait of a man in existential disarray.” Which–noted Malcolm Jones in Newsweek–“made me laugh so hard I fell off the sofa.” Plain Heathen Mischief ups the existential ante, as Joel King, a defrocked Baptist minister, finds life even more bedeviling once he’s served six months for a career-ending crime he might not even have committed. Now his incommunicado wife wants a divorce, the teenage vixen of his disgrace is suing him for a cool $5 million, a fresh start in Montana offers no hope for ex-cons of any religious persuasion, and the refuge provided by his sister turns as nasty as his parole officer. Talk about a crisis of faith. On the upside, a solicitous member of Joel’s former congregation invites him into a scam that could yield some desperately needed cash, and soon the down-on-his-luck preacher is involved with a flock of charming con men, crooked lawyers, and conniving youth. In a feat of bravura storytelling, Martin Clark ranges from the cross to the double cross, from Virginia to Las Vegas, from jail cells to trout streams, as he follows his Job-like hero through dubious choices and high-dollar insurance hustles to a redemption that no reader could possibly predict. Wildly imaginative, at times comic, at times profoundly sobering, and even more audacious than his wonderfully idiosyncratic debut, Plain Heathen Mischief is a spiritual revelation of the first order.

The Heathen Anthology by Osred Pdf

THE HEATHEN ANTHOLOGY is the first collection of popular heathen and pagan lyrics by the greatest poets in the English language. Expressing the entire range of heathen emotions, passions and beliefs, these literary pioneers envisaged a glorious future for those of us who have survived what has been called the Period of Dual Faith. Many of these writers thought of themselves as Christians, but still wrote sincere heathen verse when the spirituality of their ancestors called to them. Others were proudly pagan all along. The legacy of these timeless intellects is embodied in this collection of the very best of English heathen poetry.

Heathen Gods in Old English Literature by Richard North Pdf

Heathen gods are hard to find in Old English literature. Most Anglo-Saxon writers had no interest in them, and scholars today prefer to concentrate on the Christian civilization for which the Anglo-Saxons were so famous. Richard North offers an interesting view of Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian paganism and mythology in the pre-Viking and Viking age. He discusses the pre-Christian gods of Bede's history of the Anglo-Saxon conversion with reference to an orgiastic figure known as Ingui, whom Bede called 'god of this age'. Using expert knowledge of comparative literary material from Old Norse-Icelandic and other Old Germanic languages, North reconstructs the slender Old English evidence in a highly imaginative treatment of poems such as Deor and The Dream of the Rood. Other gods such as Woden are considered with reference to Odin and his family in Old Norse-Icelandic mythology. In conclusion, it is argued that the cult of Ingui was defeated only when the ideology of the god Woden was sponsored by the Anglo-Saxon church. The book will interest students interested in Old English, Old Norse-Icelandic and Germanic literatures, Anglo-Saxon history and archaeology.

The Heathen Golden Dawn by Isaac Hill Pdf

A new and complete curriculum of Heathen ceremonial magic. This foundational textbook contains a complete curriculum of occult training, for the serious student of ceremonial magic. The Golden Dawn system has been the most influential of the modern magic schools, inspiring many thousands of spiritual seekers across the world, but its Judeo-Christian religious framework has made it more difficult for modern polytheists. Taking the cue from John Michael Greer's The Celtic Golden Dawn, and with his blessing, this book uses the Golden Dawn magical system in a Heathen context with three tracks for the Anglo-Saxon, Norse and modern Heathen, as well as the formula for additional tracks. The course of study goes through four grades, "Thrall", "Karl", "Jarl" and "Konr", leading the student systematically from the foundations to complex ritual magic, all the while integrating and internalizing traditional lore. By the end of the course, the magician will be competent in rune magic, Heathen herbalism and herbal magic, magical brewing, planetary magic, amulet consecration, the Heathen cabala, in addition to rituals of transformation, invisibility, conjuration and self-initiation.
