Not illustrated. 1874 edition. Excerpt: ... in the right hand, and some of the principal women carried silver doves, from whose beaks issued thin streams of thrice blessed incense. The procession walked all round the city. Each of its gates was separately blessed, and sprinkled with holy water, and a new cross planted near. And so the city acknowledged its sins, and repented of them according to the rules of a gorgeous ritual, and once more renewed its faith in that Church which, if it could not prevent earthquakes, could perhaps shorten their duration and mitigate their fury; but, without a perhaps, could make things pleasant, and restore them to the same comfortable assurance as existed before. The Spanish Government had now been trying for more than two hundred and fifty years to introduce order and civilization into Peru. It did not succeed, and one reason for its failure might be suggested by the exhibition of this morning. The Viceroy, the highest official and most important civil person in those kingdoms, was made to walk like a criminal in a public procession, his head covered with ashes, his feet bare, and a rope round his neck; which signified--if it signified anything--that the Government of Peru repented in dust and ashes for its past sins, and its members confessed that they deserved hanging for some of the sins which they had committed. The Viceroy knew well enough that the gold he had received, and which he had shown to the Marchioness, only represented so much dust thrown into the viceregal eyes--blinding him to acts of injustice, whereby the bribers would make ten or twenty times more money than they had presented to him. Well, he would repent of this. And he did, after a fashion prescribed by the spiritual authorities. But he kept the gold. Some of the best laws...

Garcilaso Inca de la Vega by José Anadón Pdf

Sixteenth-century historian Garcilaso Inca de la Vega had a unique view of the ancient Inca Empire and the Americas. A Peruvian mestizo who emigrated to Spain, he was the first writer to envision Latin America as a multiethnic continent, and he advanced a humanist interpretation of New World history that continues to enrich our appreciation of that era. Widely read and translated, Garcilaso is a key figure for understanding the development of mestizo culture in Latin America and his works have sparked many heated debates. This new collection of articles advances that discussion through contributions by twelve distinguished scholars who review central aspects of Garcilaso's life and work from the perspectives of history, linguistics, literary theory, and anthropology. These essays explore the complex intertextual threads which weave through Garcilaso's principal writings. Some examine the relationship of his work with the canon of European historiography, while others stress its link with Andean culture; still others focus on the puzzles presented by his use of self-representation.Many of the articles offer fresh readings of Garcilaso's Royal Commentaries and include not only textual analyses of key themes but also a reassessment of Inca political organization. Other contributions address his Florida of the Inca, focusing on such aspects as its discourse and dating. Together, all the essays demonstrate that Garcilaso scholarship continues to be receptive to new critical approaches. Assembled as a tribute to José Durand, whose life-long study of Garcilaso renewed scholarly understanding of the historian's work, Garcilaso Inca de la Vega is a valuable collection for anyone interested in the history of North and South America or the rise of mestizo culture. It contributes significantly to current studies in multiculturalism as it renews our appreciation for one of its earliest proponents.

The Borzoi Anthology of Latin American Literature: From the time of Columbus to the twentieth century by Emir Rodríguez Monegal,Thomas Colchie Pdf

A comprehensive anthology including historical and critical as well as biographical commentary on each writer's work and on each major period in the literature as a whole. Professor Monegal has organized this gigantic anthology, which reaches from the time of Christopher Columbus to our own decade, on the premise that "Latin American literature is more an idea than an actuality, simply because Latin America itself has never achieved cultural integration." True enough, as the reader of any daily newspaper might guess; but Monegal goes further. His selections demonstrate that it wasn't until the middle of the 19th century, when a late-blooming variety of European Romanticism combined with newly achieved Latin American political independence, that the intention of a Latin American literature was even conceived. Then the letters and journals of Vespucci, Bernal Diaz, and their fellow explorers and conquistadors, with their Renaissance insistence on the fabulous, came to serve as a source for the continental vision of men like Andres Bello, Ruben Dario and Jose Enrique Rodo. Independence movements also produced political divisiveness and a backwater brand of literary realism that prevailed for decades; but in spite of this, the tendency of Latin American literature has been toward the marvelous and the formally experimental, and its most compelling metaphor, from Esteban Echeverria to Jorge Luis Borges and Gabriel Marquez, has been that of discovery.
