The streets were still for kids and we knew how to make our own fun, though some of the mischiefs we got up to may not be classed as fun nowadays. If we were poor, we didn’t realise it; if we were ill-treated, we thought of it as normal. Kids didn’t complain in those days (or they got a ‘slap across the lug’). Kids knew their place, we just got on with life and enjoyed it to the fullest. In No-mans-land, Josefine and the children were shot at by East German border guards. Nonetheless, Josefine felt that the risk of walking on was worth taking as the family would anyway have starved to death in East Germany. She succeeded and after many obstacles found her husband across the border. In order to obtain ration cards for his family, Ferdinand intended to leave them temporarily in a refugee camp in Regensburg, Bavaria, only to be told by the camp commandant that Josefine and the children had to be sent back to East Germany by train the next morning due to the lack of space for more people. Ferdinand decides to take the family to his elderly parents, who had also been deported (this time more humanely) to a small village in Bavaria. At last, the family was safe, but many obstacles and losses had to be overcome before a tolerable life could begin. The dramatic attempts of other close relatives to escape the life-threatening chaos all around them are interwoven into the main story, while the background is the roller coaster of political events and history in the making.

Some of the things Leo experienced included getting kidnapped by a bungling thief at a 7-Eleven convenience store, accidentally burning down a Mexican restaurant, and being in a van that flipped over the guardrail into a ravine and the driver turned out to be a drug dealer. Leo documented his journey in a journal on his tablet. He hoped to someday write a book about his journey and give the profits to charity. He reached Santa Monica in thirty-nine days and had grown in so many ways. Once he reached the West Coast, Leo had a decision to make. Should he spend a few days at the beach then head back to Kitty Hawk, or continue his soul-searching? His story continues in the sequel.

The telling of my story has a twofold purpose. First, it is to record my autobiography. OPD-CA-2, the multiaxial diagnostic system for psychodynamically oriented psychiatrists and therapists, now for children and adolescents. Following the success of the Operationalized Psychodynamic Diagnosis for Adults (OPD-2), this multiaxial diagnostic and classification system based on psychodynamic principles has now been adapted for children and adolescents by combining psychodynamic, developmental, and clinical psychiatric perspectives. The OPD-CA-2 is based on four axes that are aligned with the new dimensional approach in the DSM-5: I = interpersonal relations, II = conflict, III = structure, and IV = prerequisites for treatment. After an initial interview, the clinician (or researcher) can evaluate the patient's psychodynamics according to these axes to get a comprehensive psychodynamic view of the patient. Easy-to-use checklists and evaluation forms are provided. The set of tools and procedures the OPD-CA-2 manual provides have been widely used for assessing indications for therapy, treatment planning, and measuring change, as well as providing information for parental work.
