The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 (Classic Reprint) by Heber J. Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: March 31, 1904 There have been a number of converts made who have joined themselves to adjacent stakes of Zion of which there are eight within the mission borders. Some members who have been slack in their duties have been persuaded to renew their diligence in the work. Many girls, who have drifted away from the Church and have married outside of its pale, have been found and their children have been blessed and baptized. In this way alone the establishment of the mission has done much good. The mission work has been and is still growing and, though few converts are being made, many have become warm friends and defenders of the Mormon Elders. Hospitality is characteristic of the people and the Elders have suffered little or no hardship when left to their mercy. God has abundantly blessed His servants in this mission. Comparatively few are met who give credence to the many stories which are being circulated about the Church. One old gentleman said to the writer the other day, If some of these people who are doing so much talking would go to Utah and see for themselves, as I have done, they would return with the notion that the Mormons are a pretty good people. Referring to the Senator Smoot agitation, he continued, Petitions are no guide to be governed by. I could go out and in a few hours get fifty names to a petition to hang a man. Liberality of thought and expression is everywhere heard. The people are willing to allow all others their own peculiar mode of worship and show no desire to molest them in it. They are content with the religion of their fathers and do not give themselves to worrying about their neighbors. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66 by Heber J. Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 10, 1904 One of the essentials, the leading essential, is the proper appreciation of the doctrines of the Gospel of J esus Christ. There is that which will bring life, and joy, and happiness forever. You should not esteem it lightly, nor deny its messengers a hearing. They stand ready at your doors to teach it you, freely and without cost. Despise them not, nor spurn their message. Though its adoption may bring you some annoyance, in the final review of your life it will act as a well of living water springing up unto everlasting life. You may think that the Latter-day Saints have not a message worth your while; you have more important things. I tell you that to fail to hear them, to avoid or refuse entertaining them, and to neglect to listen to and obey the message which they bear, is precious opportunity lost, which, one day, in the final, the home review of the experiences of your life, will bring you sorrow and regret. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66 by Herber J. Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: November 17, 1904 It was the voice of a little child, and the old man wondered that a child should be alone on that bank where only the wild beasts wandered after nightfall. A third time the voice called. Then Ofi'a arose slowly, for he was stiff in his limbs and there was pain in his body, and he said to himself I know not whether I shall be able to ford the river or no, but for the sake of the Lord Christ, and of the little child, I will try it for the last time. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: August 25, 1904 The majority of church registers used, to about the year 1800, were books of parchment, made from prepared sheepskins. The writing varies from the neatest efforts of a scholarly hand to the coarsest, all but unreadable scrawl. Most registers of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are written in old English text, with Latin abbreviations and Latinized given names, the sur names being unchanged. This writing is quite easily understood by anyone of ordinary education after a little careful study and comparison. The spelling of surnames is varied in the extreme, but can be accounted for by our foreparents being, as a rule, uneducated and speaking various dialects therefore, when the name was spoken the one who recorded would, if not con versant with it, spell it as pronounced. The writer has frequently found one individual's name Spelled in three or four different ways, at the registering of the marriage, and that of subsequent baptisms. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: December 8, 1904 (Classic Reprint) by Heber J. Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: December 8, 1904 His struggles had been with the world about him, with his environment rather than with himself, and he did not possess the mighty faith that could ever come every obstacle. He did his duty, preaching, tracting, expounding as opportunity afforded. In the district in the Southern States where he labored, there was a bitter prejudice against Mormon missionaries, and one day he found himself in the hands of a mob, a rope around his neck, the tree selected for the place of his execution in sight. 9 trembled, and believed in his heart that his last hour had come. Suddenly, through his inmost being, rang the words spoken when he was set apart for his mission, that he should go in peace and return in safety. Instantly all fear left him, and he felt such peace, such security, such perfect faith as filled the hearts of the disciples who walked with Jesus in Galilee. I firmly believe that it is to this perfect faith alone that he owes his miraculous preservation. On another occasion, after he had been preaching, a stranger approached Elder Morrell and his companion, and said that both he and his wife believed what they had heard. God's promises, made 1900 years ago, were as effective as ever: and His servants, in His name, could heal the sick, even as the Savior had healed them when He was upon the earth. This man had a daughter, a cripple, paralyzed in arms, limbs, and back, and he believed that if the Elders administered to her she would be made whole. So the two missionaries went to the house, and the girl exhibited as much faith as did her parents. She wanted their hands laid upon her head, their blessing. They explained the need of perfect faith, and the people all declared their implicit confidence in God's word and in His servants. What were they to do? This was no seeking after a sign. It was the supreme test of the very truth which they had been preaching. By their own faith, their testimony as to the divinity of the restored Gospel was to stand or fall. Never before had they so felt their own weakness. In their extremity the Holy Spirit prompted their action. They told the parents that they would spend two days in prayer and fasting, and then would perform the sacred ordinance. This was perfectly scriptural and the parents gladly acquiesced in the plan. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: September 1, 1904 (Classic Reprint) by Heber J. Grant Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: September 1, 1904 There were a good many small towns around Paisley, and the council of the branch sent me and Elder Sproul out to preach in them. We went and felt very happy while doing so, although we had to walk many miles, often being cold, wet and hungry. Nevertheless, we felt a joy in our labors that nothing else could give us. I well remember that trade was very dull, and I was working part of the time, only a day and half each week. I called my best shoes my patent ones, because each shoe had a hole right through both the outer and inner soles, so that they had this advantage: if they let the water in, they were sure to let it out again; but when the gravel got in, it was not so pleasant. When I felt dull, Elder Sproul, who was a good singer, would start up a hymn, and when he felt discouraged I would try my best to make him laugh by some pleasant antic. But the best of all was the peace and comfort we enjoyed through the Spirit of God as we trudged along, wearied after our day's work, especially if we had baptized some honest souls into the Church; then indeed our hearts were filled with joy. When the people began to get careless in coming to our meetings, we left off traveling so far, and by the advice of the brethren, we opened a hall in a place called Charleston, in the suburbs of Paisley. Here we preached for some time, and baptized quite a number, among whom was David M. Stuart. While preaching in this place one or two interesting incidents occurred, which I will mention. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: September 29, 1904 Smoking is expensive. The pocket money 01 the average boy 18 not enough to sustain the habit. I sometimes wonder that parents don't see this. My business experience teaches me that more boys lose their characters through the smoking habit, by being tempted to steal, than through any other cause. The cigarette habit grows upon them; they must have their smoke, their pocket money is limited; they become an easy prey to the evil one through the petty pilfering, which is so common in business life, and that leads on slowly but surely to greater evil. I repeat that I know Of no cause that has ruined so many boys 1n business life as the cigarette-smoking habit. A director of a public company recently said to me, You see that lad! We have reckoned that he must spend 23. 6d. Per week in tobacco. He never leaves our premises but he lights a cigarette, and his wages will not run to_ it. In less than a month that lad was dismissed in disgrace to the great grief Of a highly respected family. Tobacco appetite had ruined his character. Any business man having large experience with lads will know Of many similar instances. When you become a master or a merchant, which Of two boys would you choose for your service - the one who smokes, or the one who does not? A lad to day who 13 known to be a smoker has little chance to get a situation ln_ competition with a lad who does not smoke. If this be so it is a strong argu ment against beginning, or continuing the habit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 66: August 18, 1904 When the Gospel was restored to earth in the present dispensation, India was not forgotten. In the life of Joseph Smith, by George Q. Cannon, page 308, we read that as early as 1839-40, Elder George A. Smith, who was then presiding over a conference in England, ordained and blessed William Donaldson, an English convert, to perform a mission to the East Indies. Again in 1853, a number of Elders came from Salt Lake City and labored in India for three years. Among these the names of Elders Hugh Findlay, A. Milton Musser and Truman Leonard are remembered here. The following extract from a letter by Elder A. Milton Musser, published in the millennial star of April 4, 1857, shows how they fared: In conjunction with my brethren, my endeavors to gospelize, though assiduous, were not crowned with the success so meritorious an undertaking deserved. The greatest work we accomplished was in saving ourselves. The superstitions and traditions of the credulous natives (who exist in India as densely as the lice and frogs in Egypt); the bigotry and arrogance of the Europeans, coupled with a climate 'as hot as the place set apart for lost souls, ' all. Combined to militate against us, and proved impregnable barriers against every work of a regenerating nature. Thrice happy were we when called to beat a retreat by our esteemed president, Brother Young. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
