Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: April 28, 1910 I could not keep my seat when the priest said the 'mormons' were not Christians, and didn't believe in Christ. I told him about my dear mother, who is now dead, taking me on her lap many times when I was only four or five years old, teaching me that J esus was the Son of God, and about His atonement and that it was only through Him that we all could be saved. Addressing the pastor, I said: 'these lessons I'll never forget as long as I live, and let me tell you, pastor, that my mother was a 'mormon' and that I was born over in Utah. Now don't you ever tell anybody that the Latter-day Saints don't teach Christ and Him crucified, for that is a falsehood.' He bowed his head as if he were ashamed. 'why, ' said I, 'i have never heard anything but that as long back as I can remember; if there is anybody who believes in J esas, the Latter-day Saints do.' I continued my talk to him, and explained authority, and revelation, and priesthood, telling him about the restoration of the same, etc. He then looked at his watch and said it was time to go, but, before he went, I made him a present of 'the Fundamental Principles of the Gospel, ' (by Apostle Orson Pratt), which he accepted and promised to read. He took me by the hand and thanked me. We parted after about forty minutes interview. When the elders previously visited this man he had in almost every case refused to take our tracts, but now he accepted a good book. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72 by Charles W. Penrose Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: March 3, 1910 It is related that General Johnston, pretending to believe that Colonel Kane was a spy, sent an orderly to place him under arrest, but upon subsequent consideration blunderingly converted the order into an invitation to dine at headquarters. Colonel Kane's response was a formal challenge to the commanding officer. Governor Cumming espoused the cause of his guest and resented with great spirit the insult which had been offered him. The impending duel was prevented by the prompt action of Chief Justice Eckels, who threatened to arrest and punish all concerned if it proceeded farther. Mrs. Kane, writing with reference to this incident says: It may seem as if it were an anti-climax that Colonel Kane, on what he felt to be a God-given mission, should challenge Albert Sidney Johnston to fight a duel. But old fashioned chivalry in that day still believed in duelling, and Colonel Kane welcomed the chance given him by Johnston's blunder in arresting him on his arrival in camp, to claim Governor Cumming's services as his second. The old Georgian's hospitable blood was fired by the insult offered to his guest, and he at once became willing to act as his second, and, further, to become his champion and partisan to the extent of placing himself in his hands to go with a Mormon escort to Salt Lake City against the strongest remonstrances of Johnston. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 71: March 18, 1909 Elder Black has' been telling me of a testimony a gentleman investigator received last week. He is a leading business man of Belfast, and for some time has been investigating our doctrines thoroughly. He has read the Book of Mormon over very care fully, Last week there was a lecture delivered in one of the pub lic halls in this city. The subject of the lecture was, 'the Indians of South America.' The lecturer had been in South America for seventeen years, and had made a study of Indian customs, He had maps and charts of the country, and knows the Lamanites well. The gentleman attended the lecture and he said he could, through his having read the Book of Mormon, tell everything the man said was true, and he said that what that lecturer said proved to him beyond a doubt that the Book of Mormon is a Divine record. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 72: January 20, 1910 That this was in force with ancient Israel is amply proved from Numbers 15: 32 to 36, where a man was found gathering sticks on the Sabbath day, with which to keep himself warm, and he was Stoned to death at the command of the Lord, and in accordance with this (israel's) law. We ask if the law is in force to-day with relation to the penalty, and the answer comes, N o I We dare not stone people to death to-day. And yet the penalty of the law is more than one jot or tittle of the law which the: Sabbatarians say will not pass away until all is fulfilled. Let it be understood here, that jot (yod) is the smallest letter of the Hebrew alpha bet, and tittle the Space between the words of a Hebrew phrase. If, then, there Should not one jot or tittle pass unfulfilled from the law until all was fulfilled, and the penalty has passed from the law does it not argue that all is fulfilled? Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 69: May 30, 1907 I desire to impress this thought upon your minds, for I want you to understand that this is the meaning intended to be conveyed by the words, entering into the rest of God. Let me assure you that that man who is not thoroughly established in the doctrine of Christ, who has not yielded his whole soul unto the Lord, and to the Gospel He has taught to the world, has not yet entered into that rest. He is still at sea, so to speak, wandering, unstable, lacking firmness, lacking the faith that cannot be moved, ready to be overtaken by the cunning and craftiness of him who lies in wait to deceive and mislead into error and darkness. While he that has received the testimony of Jesus Christ in his heart, he that has yielded his all to the kingdom of God and to the will of the Father, is so established. His heart is fixed; his mind is made up; doubts have been dispelled; fears have all been removed; he knows in whom to trust; he is thoroughly established in his purposes and in his determination that, as for him and his house he will serve God, keep His commandments and walk, as far as it is possible for human creatures to walk, in purity of life, in honor, fidelity, and uprightness before the Lord. I thank my God that this spirit and feeling of unrest has been removed from my thoughts and mind with reference to the work in which we are engaged; and that the Lord has given me assur ance that is beyond all other things in relation to this matter. I rejoice in the Gospel; I rejoice in the testimony of the Spirit of God in my heart; I rejoice in the testimony of the Prophet Joseph Smith; I rejoice in every principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that we have become acquainted with, so far as my knowledge goes. I cannot ask for, I do not want anything better than the principles of life and salvation revealed in this great plan of re demption restored to the earth in the latter days. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 92: June 12, 1930 While the M. I. A. Invites the middle-aged and even the aged to enroll as members, an invitation which is accepted by many, its mission primarily is with those boys and girls and young men and women who are passing through the most critical period of their lives. Its aim is to secure to its members in their youth a conscious testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, by the develop ment and exercise of the gift of God within them, bestowed upon them in their childhood by the laying on of hands of the Priest hood; and so prepare and, in a measure, qualify them for the missions they are expected to perform. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 89: May 26, 1927 If it is true, as stated, that the members of the Church no longer regard Joseph Smith as a prophet with a message from God to the people of the world, and that the men who preside over the Church are no longer recognized as the mouthpiece of the Lord to the membership, then indeed are we without hope, for we are immediately reduced to the condition of these critics. The Lord has declared that where there is no revelation and prophecy the people perish. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 (Classic Reprint) by David O. McKay Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 (Classic Reprint) by James E. Talmage Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good w ill. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 76: June 4, 1914 So that, it appears distinctly that it is the young women who are most inclined to follow the outsider, and to become associated in marriage with non-believers, which is a pity. The number of members of the Church divorced during the year is 163; of this number 59 had been married in the temples, and 104 by civil ceremony. I think that here is a point Worthy of observation by the Latter day Saints. Men and women who become united in the holy bonds of wedlock, according to the rites and ceremonies of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, enter into that solemn relation ship with better understanding of the duties and responsibilities of marriage than others do, because they are taught more fully the facts in the case. There were excommunicated from the Church, in the stakes of Zion, 55 persons. Mostly, I suppose, for being carried away by every wind of doctrine. We have some foolish people who take up with any chimera, or foolish notion that anybody may advance to them. They are to be pitied. Baptisms into the Church, of children and adults, within the stakes, numbered 35 to the thousand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
