The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83 by Orson F. Whitney Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: August 25, 1921 It is true, in the main, that we teach these doctrines concerning God, but we certainly deny that they are antagonistic to the Scriptures, or dishonoring to the Divine Being; for this reason that we accept the full and complete revelation of God, the Eternal One, through the person, the character, and attributes of the Lord Jesus Christ himself. He, for us, is the revelation of God to man and this View justifies all we teach about God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83 by Orson F. Whitney Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: September 22, 1921 Such an expedient, in the moral government of God, the apostles asserted the death of Christ to be. They preached that all men were condemned already - that God had thoughts of peace and not of evil towards all men - that these thoughts were to be exercised in such a manner, as not to destroy the law, and that the medium or expedient for doing this was the sacrifice of his only Son, as an atonement or satisfaction to public justice for the sins of men. The sufferings of the Son of God were substituted in the room of the execution of the penalty threatened to the offender. The atonement in the death of Christ is not the literal enduring of the identical penalty due to the sinner; but it is a provision, or an expedient, introduced instead of the literal cause of the suffering, which will answer the same purposes, in the Divine administrations, as the literal execution of the penalty on the offender himself would accomplish. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: October 20, 1921 In the opening session of the Institute, Rev. A. W. Moulton sought to correct an erroneous impression. Apparently, he is reported to have said, it had been given out that these meetings are an open attack on the 'mormon' people and the Latter-day Saints' Church. This is not true, he said. What we are planning to do is to study the 'mormon' people and their Church, rather than to conduct a campaign against them. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 83: September 15, 1921 Christ is too broad for America, that it reaches beyond this earth itself and can be properly visualized only as we follow it through the corridors of the stars into the infinite universe. They say that the English people are not sentimental, which however I do not believe; but if it be true, and you do not com prehend what I have just said because it is lost in feeling, let me say that it is not sentiment, but is given as a fact most ap parent to those favored with a view past the merely superficial things of this world. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: February 3, 1921 And now as the great purposes of God are hastening to their accomplishment, and the things spoken of in the Prophets are fulfilling; as the kingdom of God is established 011 the earth, and the ancient order of things restored, the Lord has manifested to us this duty and privilege. We are commanded to be baptized for our dead, thus fulfilling the words of Obadiah, when speaking of the glory of the latter day: And Saviors shall come upon Mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau, and the kingdom shall be the Lord's. A View of these things reconciles the Scrip tures of truth, justifies the ways of God to man, places the human family upon an equal footing, and harmonizes with every principle of righteousness, justice and truth. We will conclude. With the words of Peter: For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles. For, for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit. - Times and Seasons, April 15th, 1842. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints Millennial Star, Vol. 83: December 15, 1921 I am in receipt of your letters dated Thanksgiving Day, and appreciate very highly the loving sentiments expressed in them. It was very kind of mother and you to Spend part of the holiday writing to me. I was pleased to hear that you have taken up the Book of Mormon as a home study. I have read it through several times. The more I read it the better I like it. Like it? I love it, yes, with all my heart. I have thanked God many times for preserving it, for bringing it forth in the day in which we live, and for the privilege I have had of reading and pondering over its sacred pages. Do you know what the Prophet Joseph Smith said concerning the Book of Mormon? He said a man would get nearer to God by reading it than he would by reading any other book. The Prophet spoke the truth. No book has ever brought me as near to God as the Book of Mormon has. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: August 4, 1921 Baruch's answer was that Jeremiah pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book (verse The information which the Scribe gave the princes that he wrote the words of the prophet with ink was wholly unnecessary unless there was a known practice among some of the Jews to record the word of God to them on material where info would not be of any service whatever. It is to be oh served, too, that the word pronounced which occurs in Baruch's answer, is one that is rarely, if ever, in any other instance, used in Scripture in the same or even a similar connection. Other words that express the ordinary meaning of pronounced are not hard to find and occur frequently in the Bible. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: August 11, 1921 Before turning attention directly to the answer to this question, it is observed that the Lord himself called the plate or plates upon which Isaiah was directed to do some certain writing a roll. Divine sanction is thus given to call that particular record, though written on metal, by the same name that the Jews some times gave to sections of Scripture written on parchment. This point should be kept in mind to meet a possible objection that a collection of metal plates could not rightly be called a roll, and also to get a better understanding of the remarks that are soon to follow. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: December 29, 1921 Addressing a conjoint meeting of Mutual Improvement As sociations at Franklin, Idaho, a short time ago, Professor Josiah Hickman delivered a very impressive discourse on the Word of Wisdom, in which he clearly set forth the baneful effects of tea and coffee, alcohol and tobacco upon the human system. Professor Hickman began by reading a portion of the revelation on the Word of Wisdom, showing that God had sent it as a greeting to the saints, as a principle of temporal salvation, with a promise of long life, physical endurance, and ability to gain great wisdom, even hidden treasures of wisdom. What greater gift can man desire for earth triumph? The speaker then reviewed the condition of the world at the time the revelation was given and the ideas the people had concerning alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea and coffee. They believed that brandies, etc., were necessary in sickness, poisoning, exposures to extreme colds, to keep off sunstrokes, and gave man power to do more physical work. Every one of these ideas has been proved fallacious. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: July 28, 1921 (Classic Reprint) by Orson F. Whitney Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: July 28, 1921 I have just finished reading a book, God's Message to the Human Soul, by John Watson, D. D. It is an able defense of the Bible, and gives added lustre to the sacred volume. In a chapter on The Standpoint of the Book, the distinguished author says: If one would catch the likeness of a portrait, he must stand at the proper angle of light; if one would gather the sacred treasures of a book, he must enter into its intention. Every department of thought has its own province, and every book has its own motive. With science it is the study of the facts of nature; with literature it is the criticism of life; with philosophy it is the principle of things; with art it is the apprecia tion of beauty. One book may no doubt travel in various spheres - Huxley, who had a profound respect for the Bible, expounded science in the most lucid English, and Ruskin, who was richly fed upon the Bible, was as much distinguished by his brilliant style as by his artistic insight. There have been authors who seem to embrace the universe of knowledge, and to be cosmopolitan in their writing, but it remains that every book has its inherent bias, and its visible direction. It is fair that a book be judged by its execution; it is imperative that it be judged by its intention. If one knows not for what end the book was conceived, and created, then he will be as a stranger wandering round some ancient cathedral and guessing at the scenes upon the painted glass; if one has the key then he enters in at the door, and possesses the interior at his pleasure, while the light streams in upon him through the rich and mellow glory of the ancient glass. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: October 6, 1921 When the subject of these remarks was first taken up for consideration, it was not purposed to extend them to more than about half the volume to which they have already grown, and to continue the discussion further at length will put off the conclusion till as many more pages at least are added. Therefore with some scriptural references bearing on the subject, and limiting remarks concerning the significance of any of the cited texts, the discussion will be closed for the present. In that which follows attention shall be called to the fact that the several dispensations which the Lord has instituted in his dealings with his children on this earth have invariably been introduced by manifestations which could not fail to impress the minds of the leaders of God's faithful saints who lived and laboured at the beginning, or later, when any particular dispensation was run ning its course, that God was (or is) a personal Being, and, of course, the faithful laity would hold the same views on this matter that their inspired leaders did. The several dispensations may be designated as. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 83: August 18, 1921 I have written out here some notes from a Very interesting discussion that was carried on about one hundred years ago between Robert Southey, then poet laureate of England, who in a two-volume work called The Church's Own Book, meaning by that the record of the Roman Catholic Church in great Britain, undertook to inveigh against the position of the Catholic Church. He was answered by a Mr. Charles Butler, a very learned man in the law and a very fine controversialist. In answering the poet laureate, Mr. Butler laid down these principles of discussion which I think exceeding good, and largely applicable in the present case.
