Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: March 12, 1931 Halifax Relief Society for the Red Cross. This small group of sisters had knitted fifty pairs of socks for the men at the front. In spite of the unsettled condition of the country during this time, the interest in the Relief Society work was well maintained. The 1918 report shows there were forty-six societies in thirteen districts, with a total enrollment of 766 members. Along with the above-mentioned activities, the sisters sought out ways and means of improving their own standards and of showing the people of the world what the ideals of Latter-day Saint women are. Excerpt from The Latter Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: May 7 1931 It is gratifying to know that the nation has, by formal action, sought to encourage and cultivate every sentiment which will strengthen the filial ties which bind men and women to the home, and which exalt motherhood. There cannot be homes without mothers, for they are the home-makers; and without homes, the nation cannot long endure. So that the Observance of Mother's Day is not only a sentimental and beautiful custom, but it is a wise national policy which commends itself to all who are interested in our common weal. It is an evidence of the highest statesmanship. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: April 2, 1931 This condition of economic well-bein g is accompanied by unique social advantages. The Church is divided into wards, each com prising from five hundred to a thousand souls, and presided over by a bishop with two counselors, veritable fathers, as it were, to the flock. The law of brotherhood is invoked in the affairs of the ward. All the members, rich and poor, strong and weak, gather in meetings, conferences and social gatherings. The only un happy man is the one' who cannot learn to love and enjoy his fellow man. The group is so small that individual conditions and needs are known; help is given quietly where needed and sometimes publicly when the whole ward turns out to help a family in distress. But, that is another story. These and other conditions help explain the Mormon vitality, one aspect of which are the vast conference gatherings. Well, I hear someone say, the Mormons are a perfect people! 0, no, they are human, very human. But one hundred years of history have shown that Mormonism will make a bad man good, and a good man better. What more can be asked? The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93 by John A. Widtsoe Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: January 15, 1931 We cannot ignore the fact that this particular Christmas season is not a time of unalloyed contentment and happiness; for notwithstanding the granaries of the nations are full, their storehouses stocked to repletion, the balance of demand and distribution is deranged, so that want and plenty exist side by side. The clouds of business depression are still thick and lower in g, and this means lack of individual employment and consequent deprivation to the wage earner. Though much has been done by benevolent institutions and through personal efforts of many who are giving unto the Lord by ministering to His children, there are too many homes in which the specter of want is ghastly visible. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: April 9, 1931 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years. There, if you please, was this man, thirty and eight years old, afflicted, down upon his haunches, unable to fight his way first to the bubbling of the water, but yet each day, and perhaps this had occurred for many days and many years, he hoped to be the first to get into the pool. The Master caught this man with His eye, even as a trained physician would in a group of afflicted people find first that man in greatest need of assistance. The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93 by John A. Widtsoe Pdf

Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 93: June 11, 1931 The first principle of religion is recognition of God - faith. The real test of that recognition is giving. By that test, we may judge with accuracy the religious attitude of our country. In a recent year, statistics reveal the fact that more money was Spent for face powders and cosmetics; more for ice cream, soft drinks and chewing gum; more for cigarettes, respectively, than the total sum expended to support all churches. May that not he a criterion by which we may safely judge the religious attitude, the deep-set religious feeling of the people of the country? Do not the words of Malachi seem pertinent.
