The Lay of the Raven by Tricia Corbett Pdf

Lay of the Raven is the first book of a historical mystery trilogy describing Roger Corbeau's activities supporting the Norman conquest of England in 1066. The Lay of the Raven takes place in medieval France and Italy prior to the invasion. When Roger and his older brother Hugh return home to the Corbeau Manor, they are both sick with a pestilence. After Hugh dies from the illness, Roger, in the depths of his fever, has a dream that he has killed his brother. A fiery haired woman appears and tells him he must undertake a quest to redeem his soul lost through the mortal sin of coveting his brother's inheritance. Roger's quest puts him in great peril as he leads a delegation to Rome to secure the Pope's designation of "Dei Gratia Rex Anglorum" sanctioning Duke William's pending invasion of England. The Pope's sanction will turn a land grab into a holy war which will make raising an army much easier. The second book, The Ravens Quest, already published, describes Roger's search for a missing Papal emissary traveling to Normandy with gifts for Duke William. The historical record indicates that he Papal "legate" disappears near Tournus, France, where his guards are found slaughtered. Although the "legate" and gifts appear one week later, there is no record of what happened to effect the rescue. In this fictional account, Roger must confront forces allied against the invasion to solve the mystery. The third book, the Barony of the Raven, deals with Roger's role in the conquest of England from Hasting to the securing of the volatile Welsh Border. The emblem of the Corbeau Clan is a Raven, which plays a key role in the trilogy.

The Raven by Derek Ratcliffe Pdf

The Raven presents a summary of knowledge of its natural history, describing its distribution, feeding habits, association with other animals, and breeding. The Raven is one of the most spectacular and romantic of British birds, but relatively neglected in the modern literature of ornithology. Derek Ratcliffe here presents a thorough summary of our knowledge of its natural history, emphasizing the long association of the bird with humankind. The place of the Raven in myth, legend and history is long established, and this book describes the bird's fall from grace as a valued scavenger in medieval cities to a persecuted outcast in the modern wilds. The previous wide occurrence of Ravens is reviewed against the relationships between their present distribution, status and habitat requirements, as both a nesting and a non-breeding resident. The dependence of Ravens on carrion (especially sheep) within an omnivorous diet is the key to the species' ecology, and its social behaviour has evolved in close relation to this lifestyle. The flocking and communal roosting of non-breeders are major features of Raven behaviour, while their nesting habits emphasise the territorial nature of breeding birds and their adaptation to secure but harsh environments. Raven numbers vary in relation to their food supply, local populations adjusting accordingly, although the precise mechanism involved is still obscure. Ravens have a considerable capacity for recolonising old haunts when suitable conditions are restored, as well as exploiting new areas where the habitat becomes favourable, and there are local success stories to tell. Nationwide, however, the species' position is delicately balanced and depends on both sympathetic land management practices and improving attitudes to Ravens as friends not foe. Worldwide, Ravens are one of the most successful of all bird groups, occurring over a large part of the northern hemisphere, and replaced in some southern and tropical regions by other raven species which exploit the familiar raven niche in their own environments. The discussion of the northern hemisphere species is enlivened by reference to other species where useful. Finally, the Raven's age-old reputation for high intelligence is weighed critically against the available evidence. Today, Ravens carry a new omen in the modern world, as a barometer of goodwill to wildlife. Like those in the Tower of London, the continued existence of Ravens in our wild countryside will reveal something about both our current situation and our prospects for the future. The text is brought to life through wonderful illustrations by Chris Rose.

The Raven's Seal by Andrei Baltakmens Pdf

When the body of Thaddeus Grainger’s rival turns up stabbed to death in an alley just hours after their inconclusive duel, only one suspect comes to mind. Charged with murder, Grainger’s fate is sealed before his trial even begins. A young gentleman of means but of meaningless pursuits, Grainger is cast into the notorious Bellstrom Gaol, where he must quickly learn to survive in the filthy, ramshackle prison. The “Bells”—where debtors, gaolers, whores, thieves, and murderers all mix freely and where every privilege comes at a price—will be the young man’s home for the rest of his life unless he can prove his innocence. But his friends, the journalist William Quillby and Cassie Redruth, the poor young girl who owes Grainger a debt of gratitude, refuse to abandon him. Before they can win his freedom, however, they must decode the meaning behind the crude wax seal that inspires terror in those who know its portent and contend with forces both inside and outside the prison determined to keep Grainger behind bars. Set against the urban backdrop of late 18th-century England, The Raven’s Seal unravels a tale of corruption, betrayal, murder, and—ultimately—redemption and love. Praise for The Raven’s Seal: “Baltakmens captures the flavor and scope of classic British fiction.” —Kirkus Reviews “This atmospheric, character-driven, and plot-twisty bildungsroman is a worthy paean to Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.” —Booklist “Baltakmens gives readers of The Raven’s Seal all of the history and the mystery his subtitle promises. The mood, color, details, and dialogue come across as very authentic . . . [his] characters would not be out of place in a work of DeFoe or Thackeray. In fact, there is much of the latter’s Barry Lyndon here, with its plots and duels and confidence games, as well as deft touches of the former’s Moll Flanders, with its bawdy wenches, prison intrigues, and period squalor.” —ForeWord “The author’s exquisite prose rushes along full of surprises, shadows, betrayal, and squalid situations where the high-born and criminals intermix. A superb mystery with vibrant characters.” —Historical Novels Review
