The Leeches of Minnesota, Vol. 5 by Henry F. Nachtrieb Pdf

Excerpt from The Leeches of Minnesota, Vol. 5: Part I. General Account of the Habits and Structure of Leeches; Part II. Anatomy of Placobdella Parasitica; Part III. Classification of the Leeches of Minnesota The leeches, also cald blood suckers by people in general and Hirudinea by the scientist, are distributed all over the world. They are mentioned in the writings of many of the ancients. Herodotus, who was born about 480 B. C. Wrote about the leech under the name bdella, which still forms the ending of some of our scientific names of certain leeches and groups of leeches. Galen, a Greek physician and author born about 130 A. D., recommended the use of the leech for bloodletting. Other Greek and Roman, German, French and English writers wrote about the leech and its habit of sucking blood, so that in a general way leeches became quite well known centuries ago. The medicinal leech in particular became well known thru a great many more or less extended writ ings on its anatomy and habits and was brought into almost uni versal use by physicians. It was continued in quite general use until about the middle of the 19th century. Altho this leech in particular was in such general use and it and others frequently became objects of scientific study, we did not get a correct concep tion of some of the most prominent features of leech structure until 1900. There is still much to be cleared up concerning the structure and life history of many of our leeches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Leech by Robert G. W. Kirk,Neil Pemberton Pdf

Armed with razor-sharp teeth and capable of drinking many times its volume of blood, the leech is an unlikely cure for ill health. Yet that is exactly the role this worm-like parasite has played in both Western and Eastern medicine throughout history. In this book, Robert G. W. Kirk and Neil Pemberton explore how the leech surfaces in radically different spheres. The ancients used them in humeral medicine to bring the four humors of the body—blood, phlegm, and black and yellow bile—back into balance. Today, leeches are used in plastic and reconstructive surgery to help reattach severed limbs and remove pools of blood before it kills tissue. Leeches have also been used in a nineteenth-century meteorological barometer and a twentieth-century biomedical tool that helped win a Nobel Prize. Kirk and Pemberton also reveal the dark side of leeches as they are portrayed in fiction, film, and popular culture. From Bram Stoker’s Dracula to a video game player’s nemesis, the leech is used to represent the fears of science run amok. Leech shines new light on one of humanity’s most enduring and unlikely companions.

Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates by James H. Thorp,Alan P. Covich Pdf

The First Edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates has been immensely popular with students and researchers interested in freshwater biology and ecology, limnology, environmental science, invertebrate zoology, and related fields. The First Edition has been widely used as a textbook and this Second Edition should continue to serve students in advanced classes. The Second Edition features expanded and updated chapters, especially with respect to the cited references and the classification of North American freshwater invertebrates. New chapters or substantially revised chapters include those on freshwater ecosystems, snails, aquatic spiders, aquatic insects, and crustaceans. * Most up-to-date and informative text of its kind * Written by experts in the ecology of various invertebrate groups, coverage emphasizes ecological information within a current taxonomic framework * Each chapter contains both morphological and taxonomic information, including keys to North American taxa (usually to the generic level) as well as bibliographic information and a list of further readings * The text is geared toward researchers and advanced undergraduate and graduate students

Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates by James H. Thorp,D. Christopher Rogers Pdf

Readers familiar with the first three editions of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp and A.P. Covich) will welcome the comprehensive revision and expansion of that trusted professional reference manual and educational textbook from a single North American tome into a developing multi-volume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world. The series entitled Thorp and Covich’s Freshwater Invertebrates (edited by J.H. Thorp) begins with the current Volume I: Ecology and General Biology (edited by J.H. Thorp and D.C. Rogers), which is designed as a companion volume for the remaining books in the series. Those following volumes provide taxonomic coverage for specific zoogeographic regions of the world, starting with Keys to Nearctic Fauna (Vol. II) and Keys to Palaearctic Fauna (Vol. III). Volume I maintains the ecological and general biological focus of the previous editions but now expands coverage globally in all chapters, includes more taxonomic groups (e.g., chapters on individual insect orders), and covers additional functional topics such as invasive species, economic impacts, and functional ecology. As in previous editions, the 4th edition of Ecology and Classification of North American Freshwater Invertebrates is designed for use by professionals in universities, government agencies, and private companies as well as by undergraduate and graduate students. Global coverage of aquatic invertebrate ecology Discussions on invertebrate ecology, phylogeny, and general biology written by international experts for each group Separate chapters on invasive species and economic impacts and uses of invertebrates Eight additional chapters on insect orders and a chapter on freshwater millipedes Four new chapters on collecting and culturing techniques, ecology of invasive species, economic impacts, and ecological function of invertebrates Overall expansion of ecology and general biology and a shift of the even more detailed taxonomic keys to other volumes in the projected 9-volume series Identification keys to lower taxonomic levels

Parasites of North American Freshwater Fishes by Glenn L. Hoffman Pdf

"A remarkable accomplishment.... [This volume] has been and will continue to be a major force advancing freshwater fish parasitology."—Ernest H. Williams Jr., from the ForewordThis thoroughly revised and updated edition of a classic reference work is the definitive guide to the identification of the parasites of freshwater fishes of North America. The book provides information on public health concerns about fish parasites, the methods used to examine fish for parasites, and those parasites found only in very selective organs or tissues. It lists the known species of each genus, along with reference citations that enable readers to find literature pertinent to species identification, life cycles, and in some cases, control. In the heart of the book, each chapter opens with a description of a phylum and its relevant families and genera, followed by a species list for those genera. Drawings illustrate a representative of each genus, and are supplemented by photographic examples. Many new parasites of North American freshwater fishes have been discovered since the publication of the first edition thirty years ago. For this new edition, the author has added new species accounts and revised the taxonomy, expanded descriptions and discussion of the most important fish parasites, provided a glossary to aid nonspecialists, and updated the reference list through 1992. The volume features twice as many illustrations as the first edition, including the addition of 33 color photographs.

Praise the Lord... and Pass the Leeches by Den Pluimer Pdf

Does your heart race whenever a rooster pheasant erupts from a patch of cattails or when a drake mallard cups wings over a spread of decoys? Has your breath been taken away at the explosive flush of a ruffed grouse under foot? Do you fall asleep at night dreaming of a largemouth bass inhaling your plastic worm or a northern pike crushing your chartreuse spinnerbait? If so, then Den Pluimer's Praise the Lord-And Pass the Leeches should be part of your library. But Den goes way beyond the traditional 'huntin' and fishin'' stories, as he reveals an inspirational lesson about our Creator in each chapter. Praise the Lord-And Pass the Leeches will take you to a cattail-rimmed marsh or a dogwood-choked grouse covert. It will place you on a Lake Winnie walleye hole or a cabbage weed line full of cruising largemouth bass. It is in such places where the author lives his dream, and it is in those places where he visits his Creator.
