Excerpt from The Legendary and Myth-Making Process in Histories of the American Revolution If you confine yourself to the whig limitation, you must not only ignore the great mass of information about the loyalists, but you must also ignore the military strategy of the war, scarcely noticed in our histories, but, as Mr. Adams shows, almost as important and interesting as the campaigns of Napoleon. Founding Myths by Ray Raphael Pdf

First published ten years ago, award-winning historian Ray Raphael's Founding Myths has since established itself as a landmark of historical myth-busting. With Raphael's trademark wit and flair, Founding Myths exposed the errors and inventions in America's most cherished tales, from Paul Revere's famous ride to Patrick Henry's "Liberty or Death" speech. For the thousands who have been captivated by Raphael's eye-opening accounts, history has never been the same. In this revised tenth-anniversary edition, Raphael revisits the original myths and further explores their evolution over time, uncovering new stories and peeling back new layers of misinformation. This new edition also examines the highly politicized debates over America's past, as well as how our approach to history in school reinforces rather than corrects historical mistakes. A book that "explores the truth behind the stories of the making of our nation" (National Public Radio), this revised edition of Founding Myths will be a welcome resource for anyone seeking to separate historical fact from fiction.

The True History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by Sydney George Fisher Pdf

Excerpt from The True History of the American Revolution The purpose of this history of the Revolution is to use the original authorities rather more frankly than has been the practice with our historians. They appear to have thought it advisable to omit from their narratives a great deal which, to me, seems essential to a true picture. The Story of the American Revolution by Lambert Lilly Pdf

Excerpt from The Story of the American Revolution: Illustrated by Tales, Sketches, and Anecdotes, With Numerous Engravings For these reasons, in most books, fiction wears the aspect of truth, and truth the aspect of fiction. Children are excellent judges of manner, and are very much affected by it. They will listen with much more interest to an indifferent story, happily told, than to a good one stupidly related. They, as well as people of mature age, are more attracted by a novel, or romance, written in a lively and natural style, than by the most important history, if composed in a dull and heavy manner. In the Days of Washington by William Murray Graydon Pdf

Excerpt from In the Days of Washington: A Story of the American Revolution Cornelius De Vries, a well-to-do and retired merchant, occupied a broad-armed chair at one side of the table that stood in the middle of the room. He was a very stately old gentleman of sixty, with a clean-shaven and wrinkled face. He wore a wig, black stockings, a coat and vest of broadcloth, and low shoes with silver buckles. His features betrayed his Dutch origin, as did also the long-stemmed pipe he was smoking, and the glass of Holland schnapps at his elbow. History of the American Revolution (Classic Reprint) by William Shepherd Pdf

Excerpt from History of the American Revolution Tee discovery of the western hemisphere, effected by the bold and persevering genius of Christopher Columbus, in the year 1492, gave a new impulse to European activity; and the splendid conquests of the Spaniards in the West Indies, and in South America, excited the emulation of the other maritime powers of Christendom. Our ancestors were not dilatory in their endeavors to enter upon this new path to glory and wealth; for we find that, in the year 1498, John Cabot, by virtue of a commission from Henry VIL, took formal possession, in the name of that mon arch, of a considerable portion of the conti nent of North America. No attempt, however, was made to estab lish a colony in that country till the reign of Queen Elizabeth, when Sir Humphrey Gil bert and Sir Walter Raleigh, in the years 1578 and 1584, formed settlements there. History of the American Revolution by Samuel Farmer Wilson Pdf

Excerpt from History of the American Revolution: With a Preliminary View of the Character and Principles of the Colonists, and Their Controversies With Great Britain Tan first intention of the writer of this book was to prepare an abstract of some one of the larger histories of the American Revolution, in a more compact form than any which he had met with in his own reading. The object was to present a convenient volume, which should embrace all the principal occurrences, civil, military, and political, in America and Europe, having a direct in uence on the principles and progress of the revolutionary contest, at the same time that it should avoid all minor details not positively necessary to the continuity or integrity of the narrative. The military events were to be made less pro minent than is usual; and all circumstantial accounts of battles and mancetwes in the field, beyond leading incidents important for the understanding of the issue, were to be avoided. After examining several of the principal authorities, the design of following any particular author was abandoned, and the present plan adopted, of re-writing and re-arranging the Whole, without regard to the order or language of previous histories. These are the claims of the work to originality. Its merits are submitted to the judgment of the public. The writer has diligently compared the received authorities, and exercised his judgment freely in selecting and arranging the essential facts; and he thinks he has brought within the compass of a volume convenient for popular use, a connected narrative of the revolution, em bracing all the principal events - foreign and domestic. Those portions which relate to the foreign negotiations, are more full in proportion, than the other divisions of the sub ject. They will be found, it is behaved, correct and valuable. Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) by Everett T. Tomlinson Pdf

Excerpt from Stories of the American Revolution, Vol. 2 A great history does not of necessity always mean a long history. The war of the American Revolution may not be great when it is considered in the light of a war; but it certainly is great as an event. Those heroic struggles of our fore fathers are as worthy of remembrance as the country they bequeathed us is worthy of preserva tion. Indeed, the two in a sense may be said to be joined. The price paid for an article some times enhances the value of the possession in the eyes of the possessor. The education of an American citizen to-day may be said not to be complete without a due appreciation of the aims, struggles, and efforts of those who have bequeath'ed their possessions to us. A heritage has no less value when we realize what it has cost in life and in sacrifice. Our ancestors lifted up a new banner before the gaze of the world. It is ours to hold it up. And no country needs a strong patriotic feeling among its people so much as does a republic. But patriotism, to be valuable, must be intelligent; and there can be no intelligence without knowledge. Inspiration to be patriotic can best be incited by learning of and from those who were themselves patriots. One such man as George Washington is worth more to our land than a horde of men who can only make money. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
