The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero (Classic Reprint) by Marcus Tullius Cicero Pdf

Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero In drawing the characters of a number of persons who all lived in the same city at the same time, trained by the same discipline, and engaged in the same pursuits; as there must be many similar strokes, and a general resemblance in them all, so the chief difficulty will be to prevent them from running into too great an uniformity. This I have endeavoured to do, not by forming ideal pictures, or such as would please or surprise; but by attending to the particular facts which history has delivered of the men, and tracing them to their source, or to those correspondent affections from which they derived their birth; for these are the distinguishing features of the several persons, which, when duly represented, and placed in their proper light, will not fail to exhibit that precise difference in which the peculiarity of each character consists. Excerpt from The Life and Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: Being a New Translation of the Letters Included in Mr. Watson's Selection; With Historical and Critical Notes And to almost any reasoning and reasonable narrative of Cicero's life I should attach the highest value, irrespective of the conclusions it led to. There is no other classical work to be compared to his Letters for teaching that the Romans were real living men and women, and not mere paper characters, or school masters' puppets. The time in which he lived, too, was to us almost the central time of the world's history; and there were giants on the earth in those days. Moreover, the often noticed parallel of Cicero's age with our own, though strained by Mr. Froude beyond what it will bear,1 is yet at once plausible and penetrating, and gives to the story of this age an interest and value not resting entirely on the skill of the narrator. Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero by Marcus Tullius Cicero Pdf

Excerpt from Letters of Marcus Tullius Cicero: With His Treatises on Friendship and Old Age Marcus Tullius Cicero, the greatest of Roman orators and the chief master of Latin prose style, was born at Arpinum, Jan. 3,106 B. C. His father, who was a man of property and belonged to the class of the "Knights," moved to Rome when Cicero was a child; and the future statesman received an elaborate education in rhetoric, law, and philosophy, studying and practising under some of the most noted teachers of the time. He began his career as an advocate at the age of twenty-five, and almost immediately came to be recognised not only as a man of brilliant talents but also as a courageous upholder of justice in the face of grave political danger. After two years of practice he left Rome to travel in Greece and Asia, taking all the opportunities that offered to study his art under distinguished masters. He returned to Rome greatly improved in health and in professional skill, and in 76 B. C. was elected to the office of quaestor. He was assigned to the province of Lilybaeum in Sicily, and the vigor and justice of his administration earned him the gratitude of the inhabitants. It was at their request that he undertook in 70 B. C. the prosecution of Verres, who as praetor had subjected the Sicilians to incredible extortion and oppression; and his successful conduct of this case, which ended in the conviction and banishment of Verres, may be said to have launched him on his political career. He became aedile in the same year, in 67 B. C. praetor, and in 64 B. C. was elected consul by a large majority. The most important event of the year of his consulship was the conspiracy of Catiline. This notorious criminal of patrician rank had conspired with a number of others, many of them young men of high birth but dissipated character, to seize the chief offices of the state, and to extricate themselves from the pecuniary and other difficulties that had resulted from their excesses, by the wholesale plunder of the city. The plot was unmasked by the vigilance of Cicero, five of the traitors were summarily executed, and in the overthrow of the army that had been gathered in their support Catiline himself perished. Cicero regarded himself as the savior of his country, and his country for the moment seemed to give grateful assent. But reverses were at hand. THE letters of Cicero are of a very varied character. They range from the most informal communications with members of his family to serious and elaborate compositions which are practically treatises in epistolary form. A very large proportion of them were obviously written out of the mood of the moment, with no thought of the possibility of publication; and in these the style is comparatively relaxed and colloquial. Others, addressed to public characters, are practically of the same nature as his speeches, discussions of political questions intended to influence public opinion, and performing a function in the Roman life of the time closely analogous to that fulfilled at the present day by articles is the great reviews, or editorials in prominent journals.

The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero (Classic Reprint) by Conyers Middleton Pdf

Excerpt from The History of the Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero In the following history therefore, if I have happened to afl'irm anything that contradicts the common opinion and shocks the prejudices of the reader, I must desire him to attend diligently to the authorities on which it is grounded and if these do not give satisfaction, to suspend his judgment still to the end of the work, in the progress of which many facts will be cleared up that may appear at first perhaps uncertain and precarious: and in everything especially that relates to Cicero, I would recommend to him to contemplate the whole character, before he thinks himself qualified to judge of its separate parts, on which the whole will always be found the surest comment. The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero (Classic Reprint) by James Francis Hollings Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero The Life of Cicero, by Dr. Conyers Middleton, has long enjoyed an extensive and well-merited circulation. To the classical scholar, affording, as it does, a continued commentary upon the text, in the shape of copious notes, carefully transcribed from the works of the Orator, in addition to treating upon the minutest particulars of his history then known, and containing a mass of information derived from almost every available source with respect to the leading events of his time, it must always prove a valuable aid towards a thorough acquaintance with one of the most interesting periods. Other and no less obvious merits, notwithstanding the slight drawback presented in its decided and extravagant partiality, might easily be specified. With all its excellences, however, it is a work more suited, from its elaborate character, to the learned than either to the general reader, or to the student who may be desirous of making himself acquainted with the leading events in the Life of Cicero, without possessing leisure or curiosity sufficient to enter into the more extensive field of inquiry presented by the labours of Middleton.
