The Life of Jesus Christ by August Neander Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of Jesus Christ: In Its Historical Connexion and Historical Development The present age may be considered an epoch of transition in the development of the kingdom of God; and, as such, it is full of signs. Among the most striking of them is a greater zeal for the spread of the Gospel and the Bible through all nations, combining many and various agencies for that work; as well as a closer union among all earnest Christians, seekers of salvation and truth, of all lands, however widely separated-a new Catholic Church, which, amid all the diversity of outward ecclesiastica! forms, is preparing that unity of the spirit which has Christ for its foundation. Especially is it matter of rejoicing to see a growing spirit of fraternal union between the Christians of the Old World and those of the New; a land in which Christianity (the destined leaven for all the elements of humanity, how various soever) develops its activities under secular relations so entirely novel. It was, therefore, very gratifying to me to learn that Professors M'Clintock and Blumenthal had determined to put this volume, the fruit of my earnest inquiries, before the transatlantic Christian public in an English dress. To sec a wider sphere of influence opened for views which we ourselves (amid manifold struggles, yet guided, we trust, bv the Divine Spirit) have recognized as true, and which, in our opinion, are lilted to make a way right on through the warring contradictions of error, cannot be otherwise than grateful to us. For truth is designed for all men: he who serves the truth works and strives for all men. The Lord has given to each his own charisma, and with it each must work for all. What is true and good, then, is no man's own; it comes from the Father of Lights, the Giver of every good gift, who lends it to us to he used for all. And what is true, must prove itself such by bearing the test of the general Christian consciousness. But the pleasure with which I write these words is not unmingled with anxiety. The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ by Johann Peter Lange Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels It had been determined in the counsel of God that an honourable burial should be prepared for the deceased Prince of men; and in order to realize this decree, the motives and feelings which actuated the Jews were made to co-operate in the most remarkable manner with the inmost wishes of believers. The Jews could not but feel an urgent desire to have the bodies of the crucified taken down and buried before evening, at which time the Sabbath commenced. It was against the law, in its general terms, to let bodies remain all night upon the tree (Deut. xxi. 22, 23); and in this case there was also the special consideration, that the next day was the Sabbath, and that Sabbath-day was a high day (John xix. 31). They could not bear the thought that the bodies should remain hanging upon the cross during the greatest day of the feast. The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 6 by Johann Peter Lange Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 1 of 6: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels The work of Dr Lange, translated in the accompanying volumes, holds among books the honourable position of being the most complete Life of our Lord. There are other works which more thoroughly investigate the authenticity of the Gospel records, some which more satisfactorily discuss the chronological difficulties involved in this most important of histories, and some which present a more formal and elaborate exegetical treatment of the sources; but there is no single work in which all these branches are so fully attended to, or in which so much matter bearing on the main subject is brought together, or in which so many points are elucidated. The immediate object of this comprehensive and masterly work, was to refute those views of the life of our Lord which had been propagated by Negative Criticism, and to substitute that authentic and consistent history which a truly scientific and enlightened criticism educes from the Gospels. It is now several years since the original work appeared in Germany, but the date of its first appearance will be reckoned a disadvantage only by those who are unacquainted with the recent history of theological literature. No work has in this interval appeared which has superseded, or can be said even to compete with this. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 2 of 4 by J. P. Lange Pdf

Excerpt from The Life of the Lord Jesus Christ, Vol. 2 of 4: A Complete Critical Examination of the Origin, Contents, and Connection of the Gospels While Jesus was fighting in the wilderness with the temptation which met Him under the form of the distorted Messianic hopes of His age, and in this victorious conflict developed the course of His Messianic work, the same hopes induced the Sanhedrim at Jerusalem to send a deputation to John the Baptist. John had made a powerful impression, not only on the people in general, but also on their leaders, the Pharisees, many of whom, as we have already noticed, were so carried away by the popular enthusiasm as to submit to his baptism. Gradually a more distinct judgment had been formed in the Sanhedrim respecting the unquestionable importance of so extraordinary a theocratic undertaking. They had arrived at the conviction, that a man who, on good grounds, could venture to subject the nation to such a purification, which implied a previous excommunication, must be either the Messiah Himself, or one of His forerunners who was announced as Elias by the prophets, or the prophet promised by Moses (Deut. xviii. 15; John i. 25). But if the Baptist by his course of action, set forth such extraordinary claims, it was an official duty on the part of the Sanhedrim to take cognizance of it. and to come to a clear understanding with him. Accordingly this body resolved on sending a deputation to him, which consisted, as a matter of course, of priests and Levites. To the priests was entrusted the sanctioning of religious purification, which included the observance of the laws relative to ablutions, so that those who were sent on this occasion might be regarded as duly qualified commissioners. Historical Lectures on the Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ by C. J. Ellicott Pdf

Excerpt from Historical Lectures on the Life of Our Lord Jesus Christ: Being the Hulsean Lectures for the Year 1859; With Notes, Critical, Historical, and Explanatory The following work consists of eight Lectures, of which the first six were preached before the University of Cambridge in the year 1859. The two remaining Lectures are added as giving a necessary completeness to the subject, and as in substantial accordance with the will of the munificent Founder. It is scarcely necessary to make any preliminary remarks upon the text of the Lectures, as nearly all that seems required in the way of introduction to the subject will be found in the opening Lecture. It may, however, be desirable to remind the reader that he has before him no attempt at a complete Life of our Lord, but only Lectures upon it. These it has been my object to make as complete as I have been able in everything that relates to the connection of the events, or that in any way illustrates their probable order and succession. The separate incidents, however, have not in every case been dwelt upon at equal length; some being related by a single Evangelist, and requiring no explanatory comments, while others, from being related by two or more, and sometimes appearing to involve discordant statements, have called for somewhat lengthened considerations.
