The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, Vol. 1 (of 3) 1809-1859 by by John Morley Pdf

The Life of William Ewart Gladstone, Vol. 1 (of 3) 1809-1859 by John Morley I am well aware that to try to write Mr. Gladstone's life at all-the life of a man who held an imposing place in many high national transactions, whose character and career may be regarded in such various lights, whose interests were so manifold, and whose years bridged so long a span of time-is a stroke of temerity. To try to write his life to-day, is to push temerity still further. The ashes of controversy, in which he was much concerned, are still hot; perspective, scale, relation, must all while we stand so near be difficult to adjust. Not all particulars, more especially of the latest marches in his wide campaign, can be disclosed without risk of unjust pain to persons now alive. Yet to defer the task for thirty or forty years has plain drawbacks too. Interest grows less vivid; truth becomes harder to find out; memories pale and colour fades. And if in one sense a statesman's contemporaries, even after death has abated the storm and temper of faction, can scarcely judge him, yet in another sense they who breathe the same air as he breathed, who know at close quarters the problems that faced him, the materials with which he had to work, the limitations of his time-such must be the best, if not the only true memorialists and recorders. Britain, the Albanian National Question and the Fall of the Ottoman Empire, 1876-1914 by Daut Dauti Pdf

All too often Albania has been considered a relatively minor player in late-19th and early-20th century history. By contrast, this book highlights the significance of this nation and the Albanian question at this time through a detailed analysis of the relationship between Albania, Britain and the Ottoman Empire from 1876 to 1914. Making use of a wide range of archival source materials – some of which are published here in English for the first time – this book explores British foreign policy towards the development of the Albanian national movement and parallel demise of the Ottoman Empire. In doing so it illuminates the objectives of the British government, as well as shining a spotlight on the public opinion of both the British people towards Albanian nationalism and on the reaction of the Albanians towards the British diplomatic position. By looking through such a unique lens, here Daut Dauti is able to provide fresh insight into why the Albanians were not supported by the Great Powers in their national quest in the way that other Balkan countries were and draws significant new conclusions on British, Balkan and Ottoman relations. As such, this nuanced study is vital reading for all scholars interested in modern Albanian history, turn-of-the-century British international relations and the fall of the Ottoman Empire more broadly.

Theodore Roosevelt and His Library at Sagamore Hill by Mark I. West Pdf

President Theodore Roosevelt called himself a “book lover” and for good reason. From his boyhood days in the 1860s to the very end of his life in 1919, Roosevelt had a deep-seated passion for reading books. Wherever he went, he brought books with him. Whether he was rounding up cattle on a ranch in North Dakota, giving campaign speeches from the back of a train, governing the nation from the White House, or exploring an uncharted tributary of the Amazon River, he always made time to read books. Theodore Roosevelt and His Library at Sagamore Hill includes an overview of Roosevelt’s life as a reader, a discussion of the role that reading particular books played in shaping his life and career, and a short history of his personal library. The book also provides researchers and others interested in Roosevelt’s life with a complete list of Roosevelt’s books that are currently located at Sagamore Hill, his home in Oyster Bay, New York. The books in his personal library reflect his love of classic works of literature, his interest in history, and his fascination with the natural sciences. Theodore Roosevelt and His Library at Sagamore Hill concludes with an essay that Roosevelt wrote near the end of his life in which he reflected on his reading habits and commented on some of his favorite books.

Struggling Amidst Plenty by Subir Grewal Pdf

By: Subir Grewal We can’t solve our economic problems until we venture upstream, where few go, to discover what the true problem is. Many people out there can sense something is deeply wrong with our system of money and finance, and that the effects of it are far-reaching. However, most also don’t know the full scope of it, and how to put it all into words, so we can diagnose the root cause and then set out to fix it. That’s where this book comes in. · Written by a financial industry veteran, C.P.A., and reformed owner of a degree in economics, who can’t bear to silently watch this flawed, outdated, and yet obscure system of money & finance crush humanity. · We go behind the curtain in monetary economics, with simple explanations in layperson’s terms on topics often thought to be complex. No background in economics is required. From this, the reader will gain financial and monetary literacy on the pressing problems of today, why the status quo in economics is unable to solve them, and what needs to change. · This is THE book on inequality and what drives it. We demystify the entire monetary/financial system, show how it’s rooted in arbitrary special privilege, and explain the math of how it systematically creates a society with major inequality. · Puts forth a comprehensive solution, fit for modern times, that could help solve inequality, high debt, and “too big to fail” all at once. These ideas come from actual economists with PhDs; the author is just a translator for the layperson. (The solution is not a gold standard, Bitcoin, or more government borrowing, either.) We’ll also get into why this solution has been systematically suppressed, and why it will be tough for economists alone to solve these problems for us. · This book is non-partisan and not married to any “ism.” You’ll see how many prominent people on BOTH the “Left” and “Right” have supported the solutions proposed. · You can download it for free. Payment is voluntary and suggested at $5.00 (it can be more/less.) No strings attached, no future e-mails. This is just about getting vital information out there.

The Life of William Ewart Gladstone (Vol. 1-3) by John Morley Pdf

This book is a 3-volume record of life and work of one of Britain's greatest leaders of all times William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898). Gladstone was a British statesman and Liberal politician who, in a career lasting over 60 years, served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He also served as Chancellor of the Exchequer four times, serving over 12 years. Gladstone's own political doctrine – which emphasized equality of opportunity and opposition to trade protectionism – came to be known as Gladstonian liberalism. His popularity amongst the working-class earned him the sobriquet "The People's William". In 1868, Gladstone became Prime Minister for the first time. Many reforms were passed during his first ministry, including the disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and the introduction of secret voting. After electoral defeat in 1874, Gladstone resigned as leader of the Liberal Party. After the 1880 general election, Gladstone formed his second ministry (1880-1885), which saw the passage of the Third Reform Act as well as crises in Egypt and Ireland, where his government passed repressive measures but also improved the legal rights of Irish tenant farmers. Back in office in early 1886, Gladstone proposed home rule for Ireland but was defeated in the House of Commons. The resulting split in the Liberal Party helped keep them out of office – with one short break – for 20 years. Gladstone formed his last government in 1892, at the age of 82. The Government of Ireland Bill 1893 passed through the Commons but was defeated in the House of Lords in 1893. Gladstone left office in March 1894, aged 84, as both the oldest person to serve as Prime Minister and the only Prime Minister to have served four terms.
