The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ (Classic Reprint) by William Boothby Selbie Pdf

Excerpt from The Life Teaching of Jesus Christ This little book makes no claim to an exhaustive treatment of its great subject, nor even to be an original contribution to it. It is intended as an outline or introduction for those who are beginning the study, and who have no special critical or theological knowledge. The aim throughout has been to summarise the results of modern investigation from the constructive standpoint, and to show that when criticism has had its perfect work enough remains for faith and devotion. The subject is one which raises many problems of which no final solution is possible in the present state of our knowledge. The writer would acknowledge his obligations to many modern writers on the period, to some of whom reference is made in these pages, and among them especially to his old teacher, Dr. Sanday of Oxford, to whom all students of the New Testament owe an incalculable debt. The Teaching of Jesus (Classic Reprint) by D. M. Ross Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus An exceptional value to some Of its parts. Gospels and Epistles, it is true, alike had their origin in the Christian community, and alike come to us with a certain impress of the personality of their writers. The Gospels are not unmediated reports Of the sayings and doings of Jesus, and the Epistles are an invaluable help for understanding who Jesus was and what He taught. It is doing Violence to the known facts Of the origin Of the New Testament writings to establish any sharp contrast between the Gospels and Epistles, and it is doing violence to what we actually find to be the presentation Of Christianity in these two sections Of the New Testament. At the same time, Christ Himself is the supreme authority on Christianity. His own words claim our first attention. What He teaches about God, and Himself, and the spiritual life is the regulative teaching, in whose light the teaching Of His disciples is to be interpreted. The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Future Life (Classic Reprint) by Willis Judson Beecher Pdf

Excerpt from The Teaching of Jesus Concerning the Future Life It is impossible to think that they were wholly mistaken in testifying that these were the teachings which Jesus had com mitted to them. So far forth as they present a formulated theology, one of its staple doctrines is that of a future life, and of Jesus as dominating the future life. And even more marked, if that were possible, is the testimony they give in the form of indirect statements and impli cations. Directly and indirectly their theme is Our Saviour Christ Jesus, who abolished death, and brought life and in corruption to light through the gospel (ii Tim. I. Jesus Christ and the Christian Character (Classic Reprint) by Francis Greenwood Peabody Pdf

Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Christian Character When one turns with this new problem to the Gospels, he discovers with fresh surprise the ex traordinary richness and variety of the teaching of Jesus. Each period in history goes with its question to the simple record, and finds an an swer which seems written to meet the special problem of the time. In an age of theology the Gospels were a source of theological doctrine; in an age of ecclesiasticism they fortified the Church; in an age of emotionalism they kindled the flame of piety. The same adaptability is now discovered once more by the age of the Social Question. As others have found in the teaching of Jesus the key Of doctrine or organization or religious experience, so there is now delivered by the same teaching to the mind of the present age a key of the Social Question. Remote from the condition of the modern world as was the life of Jesus, and pri marily directed as was his teaching, not to social but to spiritual ends, he has much to say of social duty. His ethics are not individualist, atomic, a doctrine of the single soul; but organic, social, a doctrine Of the common life. The Students Life of Jesus (Classic Reprint) by George Holley Gilbert Pdf

Excerpt from The Students Life of Jesus The aim of this volume is different from that of the great lives of Christ which enrich and adorn the Christian literature of our century. For, first, it does not seek to discuss the teaching of Jesus in detail. This is regarded as a distinct theme, and is considered only in so far as seemed necessary to a clear account of the character and life of Jesus. The reader is asked to bear this fact in mind, and not to hold the book responsible for a full explanation of all the words of Jesus. Jesus Christ and the Social Question by Francis Greenwood Peabody Pdf

Excerpt from Jesus Christ and the Social Question: An Examination of the Teaching of Jesus in Its Relation to Some of the Problems, of Modern Social Life Come hither, lads, and hearken, for there is a tale to tell, Of the wonderful days a-coming when all shall be better than well. From either point Of View, however, the social question is seen to have a quality Of comprehen siveness and radicalism which makes it practically a new issue, and it is important at the outset Of the present inquiry to recognize how large a ques tion it is with which we have to do. A generation ago ML Lowell touched the note of the social question Of his time in his Vision of Sir Launfal. Social duty seemed then fulfilled in deeds of benev olence and self-sacrificing love; and a whole gen eration learned to repeat his lines as the summary Of social service. Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life (Classic Reprint) by A. A. Berle Pdf

Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. The Social Principles of Jesus (Classic Reprint) by Walter Rauschenbusch Pdf

Excerpt from The Social Principles of Jesus This book is not a life of Christ, nor an exposition of his religious teachings, nor a doctrinal statement about his per son and work. It is an attempt to formulate in simple proposi tions the fundamental convictions of Jesus about the social and ethical relations and duties of men. Our generation is profoundly troubled by the problems of organized society. The most active interest of serious men and women in the colleges is concentrated on them. We know that we are in deep need of moral light and spiritual inspiration in our gropings. There is an increasing realiza tion, too, that the salvation of society lies in the direction toward which Jesus led. And yet there is no Clear under standing of what he stood for. Those who have grown up under Christian teaching can sum up the doctrines of the Church readily, but the principles which we must under stand if we are to follow Jesus in the way of life, seem enveloped in a haze. The ordinary man sees clearly only Christ's law of love and the golden rule. This book seeks to bring to a point what we all vaguely know.
