Theological Hermeneutics and the Book of Numbers as Christian Scripture by Richard S. Briggs Pdf

How should Christian readers of scripture hold appropriate and constructive tensions between exegetical, critical, hermeneutical, and theological concerns? This book seeks to develop the current lively discussion of theological hermeneutics by taking an extended test case, the book of Numbers, and seeing what it means in practice to hold all these concerns together. In the process the book attempts to reconceive the genre of "commentary" by combining focused attention to the details of the text with particular engagement with theological and hermeneutical concerns arising in and through the interpretive work. The book focuses on the main narrative elements of Numbers 11–25, although other passages are included (Numbers 5, 6, 33). With its mix of genres and its challenging theological perspectives, Numbers offers a range of difficult cases for traditional Christian hermeneutics. Briggs argues that the Christian practice of reading scripture requires engagement with broad theological concerns, and brings into his discussion Frei, Auerbach, Barth, Ricoeur, Volf, and many other biblical scholars. The book highlights several key formational theological questions to which Numbers provides illuminating answers: What is the significance and nature of trust in God? How does holiness (mediated in Numbers through the priesthood) challenge and redefine our sense of what is right, or "fair"? To what extent is it helpful to conceptualize life with God as a journey through a wilderness, of whatever sort? Finally, short of whatever promised land we may be, what is the context and role of blessing?

The Little Book of Reversible Numbers by Michael Patrick Greaney Pdf

Reversible numbers are pairs of numbers in which the digits (or numerals) of one number are the reverse of the other, e.g., 39 and 93. The fun starts when the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are carried out between pairs of such numbers. This book begins with a look at the unexpected way in which addition and subtraction can be carried out. It then looks at how subtraction between reversible pairs leads to an equation that shows the relationship between a number and its reverse, that they are not just two unrelated numbers. Equations for addition and subtraction are derived and are shown to be useful for analysis. Some interesting behaviour occurs when repetitive addition and subtraction are carried out, using the sum or difference as the new number. The book also explores what happens when multiplying and dividing reversible numbers. It is a subject that lends itself to exploration by computer. It is not a book on computing, however. It will appeal to people who enjoy the number patterns that are produced by performing different operations on reversible pairs of numbers. Some useful tools are presented in the appendices, along with web links to various related sites.

The Book of Numbers by Peter Bentley Pdf

Numbers are at the heart of the existence of the universe and everything that is in it, and yet most of us have very little everyday understanding of the fundamentals of mathematics, let alone their part in philosophy, art, music, architecture, quantum mechanics, physics, computer technology, literature, biology, commerce, religion, and the occult; indeed every discipline which has been and is the proper study of man. This beautifully illustrated book, using computer imagery, historical drawing, paintings and photography gives a synopsis of many of the most important mathematical discoveries in each of these categories and captures something of the spirit of the men and women who have contributed to unravelling the secrets of numbers. From the discovery of zero to infinity, The Book of Numbers is calculated to amaze and astound the reader and even encourage further in depth study in the subject.
