The Shepherd and His Sheep, an Exposition of the 23rd Psalm by William Harrison Pdf

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1845 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER III. THE SHEPHERD RECOVERING THE STRAY SHEEP. PSALH xxiii. 3. HE RESTORETH MY SOUL: HE LEADETH ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR HIS NAME'S SAKE. Health is the gift of God, but it fails; grace is strong and cleansing, but nature is weak and corrupt. The Psalmist's experience, therefore, not only leads him to expatiate upon the precious privileges which belong to the sheep of Christ, but it reminds him of another branch of his Shepherd's care, the restoration of the wanderer. Whatever our health of body may be, would God that our corruption did not so often lead us away from His pastures, to follow paths that end in bitter pain and correction! But so it is. The sheep of Christ have indeed green pastures and calm retreats. They are privileged to lie down beside the waters of quietness, none disturbing them. But that which the Shepherd knows to be best, the sheep do not always consider, and the children of God are too frequently found astray. In such a case it is that the mercy and faithfulness of the Church's Shepherd appears. "He restoreth my soul" Of all the attributes of God, the most marvellous, because it is the most unexpected, and, to our ways of thinking, the most irreconcileable with His greatness and essential holiness, is His long-suffering. That God should punish rebellion is only compatible with His perfect purity and justice. That He should pardon the rebel, through the infinite work of His Son, is the prodigious unfolding of perfect love. But that he should renew this day by day, that He should go after those who wander away from Him into selfpleasing ways and sins, and that He should restore the backsliders, --this is the climax of all! and we ought to be humbled at the thought. Our views of this are cold and...

The Lord Is My Shepherd by Harold S. Kushner Pdf

The bestselling guide to the healing wisdom of the Twenty-Third Psalm—from the beloved author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People. “A book worthy of attention from people of all faiths.” —The Dallas Morning News Rabbi Harold Kushner has found that the simple, beautiful verses of perhaps the most memorable and cherished chapter of the Bible—full of honesty and optimism—have an almost magical power to comfort and calm—and to change your life. The psalm does not pretend that life is ever easy, but it offers a masterful guide to living in the world with faith and courage. Drawing on over forty years of his own thinking, on other biblical scholars, and on history, Kushner gracefully demonstrates how this sustaining work can help us cope with every aspect of life, from mundane jealousies to the death of a loved one to unimaginable tragedies of global proportions.

The Good Shepherd by Kenneth Bailey Pdf

Brings new light and life to our understanding of one of the most beloved and central images of the Christian faith. The Lord is my shepherd. Thus begins the most beloved of all Psalms - and thus begins a thousand-year journey through the Bible. Prophets, apostles and Jesus himself took up this image from David, reshaping it, developing it and applying it to their own situations and needs. Kenneth Bailey uses his celebrated insights into Middle Eastern culture and especially his familiarity with Middle Eastern shepherding customs to bring new light and life to our understanding of this central image of the Christian faith. With each of nine major Old and New Testament passages, Bailey reveals the literary artistry of the biblical writers and summarizes their key theological features. His work is also enriched by his unique access to very early Middle Eastern commentaries on these passages, bringing fresh understanding from within the mindset of these ancient worlds. The Good Shepherd invites us to experience a rich, biblical feast of ethical, theological and artistic delights.

Life Without Lack by Dallas Willard Pdf

What would it be like to live without fear? Join renowned philosopher Dallas Willard as he shares the biblically-backed secret to living with true contentment, peace, and security. In Life Without Lack, Dallas Willard revolutionizes our understanding of Psalm 23 by taking this comfortably familiar passage and revealing its extraordinary promises: "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want...Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil." Written with Willard's characteristic gentle wisdom, Life Without Lack helps you experience: God's comforting presence God's abundant generosity Peace and freedom from worry Based on a series of talks by the late author and edited by his friend Larry Burtoft and by his daughter, Rebecca Willard Heatley, Life Without Lack will forever change the way you experience the most well-known passage in all of Scripture. Praise for Life Without Lack: "Dallas Willard helps us to understand that the Twenty-Third Psalm is not meant as a nice sentiment or for kitschy decor, it is for the very thick of our lives, the very moment of crisis. Imagine what our personal lives, families, communities, and politics would look like if we rejected the frantic striving of our day, and instead embraced the life without lack offered to us in Jesus Christ. No one has helped me to imagine and enter into that life more than Dallas Willard. I recommend this book with great joy and hopeful expectation." --Michael Wear, bestselling author of Reclaiming Hope
