The Magician Detective by Fulton Oursler Pdf

Fulton Oursler was one of the great editors of his time, ruling over the Macfadden publishing empire for two decades. He created the first true-crime magazine, True Detective Mysteries, and off-beat titles like Brain Power, Ghost Stories and True Strange Stories. He achieved national fame in the '30s as the editor of Liberty. But stage magic was his first love, and, in his heart, he remained a conjurer in a black cape and top hat. In this collection of early fiction, Oursler's bewitching imagination takes flight in tales of magic, murder and mesmerizing mystery. Apparitions, half-wits, secret panels, devious deceptions, lunatic asylums, warring magicians, criminal masterminds-it's all here. Also featured is an in-depth exploration of the amazing career of Fulton Oursler.

The Magician by Timothy Gray Pdf

When New Orleans Detective John O'Meara's twenty-nine-year-old sister, Payton, goes missing in Las Vegas, the thirty-eight-year-old cop who's not shy about using lethal force catches a red-eye flight to Sin City, hoping to follow his sister's trail before it goes cold. Instead, he uncovers a murder ring that extends from a VIP booth in a gentlemen's club on the Strip all the way to the mayor's office. O'Meara, a maverick in the NOPD known for his sick (as opposed to sixth) sense, has earned a reputation for unearthing spooky criminals. But he outdoes himself in Vegas where he stumbles upon a magician from Transylvania whose onstage persona as a vampire turns out to be more than just an act. The situation heats up when O'Meara falls for the magician's former assistant, a bewitching siren with a thirst for not just blood but redemption. The ensuing struggle between passion and principle leaves behind a string of dead bodies. O'Meara is forced to face his own inner demons as he searches for Payton. He doesn't know if he'll find her dead or alive.

The Great Merlini by Clayton Rawson Pdf

Stories from the Edgar Award–winning author of the famous locked-room mystery, Death of a Top Hat, “a cornerstone of detective fiction” (The New York Times). The Great Merlini waits impatiently at the door of the Hotel Astor. Inspector Church is late for his meeting with the famed magician, with whom he consults when homicide cases venture outside the realm of the possible. A ventriloquist has attempted suicide in the wake of his wife’s mysterious strangulation. Among the suspects are a snake charmer, a nine-foot giant, a tattooed man, and a gaggle of crap players—and this is one of Merlini’s simple cases. He will pick out the killer, with no more effort than he might a rabbit in a top hat. In these twelve short stories, all originally published in Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, cofounder of Mystery Writers of America and Special Edgar Award winner Clayton Rawson’s greatest detective confronts puzzles that would leave a lesser magician’s head spinning. From vanishing blackmailers to murderous mediums, no cosmic crime can baffle the Great Merlini.

Magic and the Shinigami Detective by Honor Raconteur Pdf

"When the Night Foxes boldly break into the Fourth Precinct's Evidence Building, it causes quite the stir. The break-in is daring enough, but their method shreds the magical wards and protections on the building like confetti paper. As a Magical Examiner, Henri Davenforth is of course immediately called in. Quite to his astonishment, Captain Gregson has him work the case like a detective. Even more astounding, he assigns Henri a partner. The Shinigami Detective. The woman is famous for killing the most destructive rogue witch of the century. Henri is just baffled. What is he supposed to do with a partner? Hopefully killing one witch makes Jamie Edwards enough of an expert on magic to be helpful, as the thieves aren't content to just break into one building. They in fact seem to have an agenda, as with each theft, they take magical objects. It's all mounting to a dangerously powerful magical construct capable of toppling the wards on any building. And no one has any idea what the thieves' true target is."--Back cover.

The Magic Detective. Peter Grant ("Rivers of London") as Opposed to Sherlock Holmes ("A Scandal in Bohemia") by Katharina Lurz Pdf

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,1, University of Bonn (Institut für Anglistik, Amerikanistik und Keltologie), language: English, abstract: This paper foremost deals with the question in which ways the magic detective Peter Grant is differentiated from the non-magic detective, that is to say Sherlock Holmes, and in which ways the world of the protagonist is modified by the supernatural. Representatives for the two different approaches will be "A Scandal in Bohemia" (first published in 1891) as well as "A Study in Scarlet" (first published in 1887) by Arthur Conan Doyle and Ben Aaronovitch's "Rivers of London". Even though there are many iconic detectives that could have served the purpose, Sherlock Holmes was chosen as he is something like a patron saint of detective fiction. Priestman states on that matter that “Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes is the supreme 'character' of nineteenth-century detective fiction” (Detective Fiction 74). “A Scandal in Bohemia” was chosen here as it features a female culprit and it will be interesting to set the female role as presented in the short story against the one in the more recent novel by Aaronovitch. However, when referring to Sherlock Holmes, "A Study in Scarlet" will also be accounted for as this is the story where Watson first meets the legendary sleuth and thus the reader is described a lot of mannerisms of his through the eyes of the narrator. Peter Grant's story was selected as there is barely another novel at the time which features the supernatural next to the criminal in such a striking pattern. This assumption was made due to the fact that Peter Grant is a wizard and a police constable at the same time. Therefore it will be interesting to explore how this fact influences him and the world he lives in and also the distinction between the Victorian and the postmodern approach.

Murder and Magic by Randall Garrett Pdf

The Sidewise Award–winning series. “If you are looking for something different in the way of mysteries a few hours with Lord Darcy is a fun way to go” (Daily Kos). This alternate history series starring detective Lord Darcy and his sorcerer sidekick, Sean O Lochlainn, takes us into a reality where Richard the Lionheart’s descendants rule the Anglo-French Empire and the laws of magic have developed in place of the laws of physics. Murder and Magic, comprised of the first four stories of the acclaimed Lord Darcy series, finds Lord Darcy solving murders using his wits, a keen eye for observation, and a few choice magic tricks. In “The Eyes Have It,” Lord Darcy must figure out who killed the taciturn playboy, the Count D’Evreux. In the political thriller “A Case of Identity,” Lord Darcy picks apart the disappearance of the Marquis of Cherbourg, especially mysterious considering the escalating cold war with Poland. Lord Darcy and Master Sean investigate a body coated in blue paint already occupying a coffin built for the late Duke of Kent in “The Muddle of the Woad.” Literary humor is at the heart of “In a Stretch of the Imagination,” where the head of an important publishing house commits suicide under suspicious circumstances. Praise for the Lord Darcy series “Some of the finest fantasy ever written . . . Will certainly guarantee him a lasting place in the genre.” —SF Chronicle “He has combined the best of the fantasy and detective genres—and made them work as science fiction.” —Marion Zimmer Bradley “I cannot count the number of times I have read ‘Too Many Magicians’—each time with the same pleasure.” —Andre Norton

The Supernatural and Fantastic in Short Detective Fiction by Laird R. Blackwell Pdf

Although fantasy and supernatural literature have long and celebrated histories, many critics contend that the fantastic and the supernatural have no place in the logical, rational, world of the detective story. This book is the first extensive study of the fantastic in detective fiction and it explores the highly debated question of whether detective fiction and the fantastic can comfortably coexist. The "locked room" mystery--which often uses the fantastic as a red herring to eventually be debunked by reason and logic--has long been among the most popular subgenres of detective fiction. This book also explores stories featuring almost supernaturally gifted detectives, stories where the supernatural is truly encountered, and stories with ambiguous endings. Close to 500 detective stories from 1841 to 2000, in which the fantastic or supernatural plays a central role, are discussed and analyzed. Although not all the stories are judged to be successful as detective tales, in the great majority, the fantastic enlivens the tale and deepens the mystery without weakening the detective elements.
