Geomagnetic Diagnosis of the Magnetosphere by A. Nishida Pdf

The geomagnetic field observed on the surface of the earth has been an important source of information on the dynamic behavior of the magnetosphere. Because the· magnetosphere and its environment are filled with plasma in which electric current can easily flow, dynamic processes that occur in the magnetosphere tend to produce perturba tions in the geomagnetic field. Geomagnetic data have therefore pro vided valuable means for sensing the processes taking place at remote locations, and such basic concepts as the magnetosphere, solar wind, and trapped radiation were derived in early, presatellite days from geomagnetic analyses. Because of this advantage, geomagnetic observations have been widely utilized for monitoring the overall condition of the magneto sphere. Although the advent of space vehides has made it possible to observe magnetospheric processes in situ, supplementary information on the overall magnetospheric condition is frequently found to be indispensable for interpreting these observations in the proper perspec tive. Hence for magnetospheric physicists involved in various branches of the field it has become a common practice to employ geomagnetic data as a basic diagnostic tool.

Space Physics and Aeronomy, Magnetospheres in the Solar System by Romain Maggiolo,Nicolas André,Hiroshi Hasegawa,Daniel T. Welling Pdf

An overview of current knowledge and future research directions in magnetospheric physics In the six decades since the term 'magnetosphere' was first introduced, much has been theorized and discovered about the magnetized space surrounding each of the bodies in our solar system. Each magnetosphere is unique yet behaves according to universal physical processes. Magnetospheres in the Solar System brings together contributions from experimentalists, theoreticians, and numerical modelers to present an overview of diverse magnetospheres, from the mini-magnetospheres of Mercury to the giant planetary magnetospheres of Jupiter and Saturn. Volume highlights include: Concise history of magnetospheres, basic principles, and equations Overview of the fundamental processes that govern magnetospheric physics Tools and techniques used to investigate magnetospheric processes Special focus on Earth’s magnetosphere and its dynamics Coverage of planetary magnetic fields and magnetospheres throughout the solar system Identification of future research directions in magnetospheric physics The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Physics of the Magnetosphere by R.L. Carovillano,J.F. McClay,H.R. Radoski Pdf

This monograph is based upon the proceedings of the Summer Institute, Physics of the Magnetosphere, held on the Boston College campus, lune 19-28, 1967. The pro gram consisted of invited speakers selected by the Editors. An attempt was made to provide comprehensive treatment of all topics of primary relevance to magneto spheric physics, but, of course, some areas received greater coverage than others. The first portion of the conference consisted of tutoriallectures, four each, by five distinguished scientists, and these are presented in Part I of the monograph. The artides appearing in Part I were prepared by the Editors from tapes of the actual lectures. Preliminary manuscripts were prepared and each tutoriallecturer was given the opportunity to make changes or improvements that were incorporated into the final manuscript. H. R. Radoski prepared the lectures of Professor Helliwell; 1. F. McClay prepared the lectures of Professor Dessler and the first two of Professor Dungey; and the remaining lectures of Professors Dungey, Parker, and Van Allen were prepared by me. An effort was made for the most part to write each manuscript in the style of the lectures, but the incongruities of spoken English and the number of scribes in the kitchen undoubtedly limited our success. Everyone knows that English is written far better than it is spoken, although for some reason the spoken word is more dear.

Dynamics of the Magnetosphere by Syun-Ichi Akasofu Pdf

The Los Alamos Chapman Conference on Magnetospheric Substorms and Related Plasma Processes can be considered the fourth in a series devoted to magnetospheric substorms, after the Moscow (1971), Houston (1972), and Bryce Mountain (1974) meetings. The main motivation for organizing the Los Alamos Conference was that magnetospheric substorm studies have advanced enough to the point of bringing experimenters, analysts and theorists together to discuss major substorm problems with special emphasis on theoretical interpretations in terms of plasma processes. In spite of an extremely heavy schedule from 8:30 A.M. to 10:00 P.M., every session was conducted in an enjoyable and spirited atmosphere. In fact, during one of the afternoons that we had put aside for relaxation, John Winckler led a group of the attendees in a climb to the ceremonial cave of a prehistoric Indian ruin at Bandelier National Monument, near Los Alamos under a crystal blue sky and a bright New Mexico sun. There, they danced as the former dwellers of the pueblo had, perhaps as an impromptu evocation of a magnetospheric event.

ULF Pulsations in the Magnetosphere by D.J. Southwood Pdf

Physical and chemical studies of the earth and planets along with their sur roundings are now developing very rapidly. As these studies are of essentially international character, many international conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops are held every year. To publish proceedings of these meetings is of course important for tracing development of various disciplines of earth and plane tary sciences though publishing is getting fast to be an expensive business. It is my pleasure to learn that the Center for Academic Publications Japan and the Japan Scientific Societies Press have agreed to undertake the publication of a series "Advances in Earth and Planetary Sciences" which should certainly become an important medium for conveying achievements of various meetings to the aca demic as well as non-academic scientific communities. It is planned to publish the series mostly on the basis of proceedings that appear in the Journal of Geomagnetism and Geoelectricity edited by the Society of Terrestrial Magnetism and Electricity of Japan, the Journal of Physics of the Earth by the Seismological Society of Japan and the Volcanological Society of Japan, and the Geochemical Journal by the Geochemical Society of Japan, . although occasional volumes of the series will include independent proceedings. Selection of meetings, of which the proceedings will be included in the series, will be made by the Editorial Committee for which I have the honour to work as the General Editor.

Particles and Fields in the Magnetosphere by Billy McCormac Pdf

This book contains the lectures presented at the Advanced Study Institute, 'Earth's Particles and Fields, 1969', which was held at the University of California, Santa Barbara, during the period August 4 through 15, 1969. One hundred seventy persons from twelve different countries attended the Institute. The authors and the publisher have made a special effort for rapid publication of an up-to-date status of the particles and fields in the earth's magnetosphere, which is an ever changing research area. Special thanks are due to the lecturers for their diligent preparation and excellent presentations. The individual lectures and the published papers were deliberately limited; the author's cooperation in conforming to these specifications is greatly appreciated. The contents of the book are organized by subject area rather than in the order in which papers were presented during the Institute. Many thanks are due to Drs. Kinsey Anderson, Sam Bame, Leverett Davis, Gilbert Mead, Harry Elliot, Kenneth Behannon, Reimar Lust, A. W. Schardt, Carl-Gunne Eilthammar, and Martin Walt who served as session chairmen during the Institute and contributed greatly to its success by skillfully directing the discussion period in a stimulating manner after each lecture. Dr. Martin Walt and the Summary Panel worked hard to prepare an excellent summary of various aspects of particles and fields in the magnetosphere at the end of the Institute.

Physics of the Hot Plasma in the Magnetosphere by Bengit Hultqvist Pdf

Nobel Symposium No. 30 on the Physics of the Hot Plasma in the Magnetosphere was held at Kiruna Geophysical Institute, Kiruna, Sweden from April 2-4, 1975. Some 40 leading experts from America, USSR, and Western Europe attended the Symposium. The purpose of the meeting was to review and discuss the physics of the hot plasma in the magnetosphere with special empha sis on unsolved problems on which attention needs to be focused during the International Magnetospheric Study 1976-1978. The field is very extensive and complete coverage of all aspects was of course not possible. The radiation belts proper were, for instance, not covered. There were no formal contributed papers, but much time was devoted to discussion. These proceedings contain all review papers except the one by R.Z. Sagdeev. They are ordered by subject, starting, after the introductory lecture, with the problem of how the plasma enters the magnetosphere and ending with the question of the interaction with the ionosphere. The Organizing Committee for the symposium was composed of the following Swedish scientists: E.-A. Brunberg, C.G. Fa1thammar, I. Hu1then, B. Hu1tqvist (chairman), L. Stenf10, and H. Wilhe1msson. The Symposium was financed by the Nobel Foundation through grants from the Tercentenary Foundation of the Bank of Sweden, by the Swedish Board for Space Activities, and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which is gratefully acknowledged. Appreciated contributions "in natura" were also received from the town of Kiruna and the LKAB Company.

Hydromagnetic Waves in the Magnetosphere and the Ionosphere by Leonid S. Alperovich,Evgeny N. Fedorov Pdf

Here is a fascinating text that integrates topics pertaining to all scales of the MHD-waves, emphasizing the linkages between the ULF-waves below the ionosphere on the ground and magnetospheric MHD-waves. It will be most helpful to graduate and post-graduate students, familiar with advanced calculus, who study the science of MHD-waves in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. The book deals with Ultra-Low-Frequency (ULF)-electromagnetic waves observed on the Earth and in Space.

Transport Across the Boundaries of the Magnetosphere by Bengt Hultqvist,Marit Øieroset Pdf

The present volume is the second one in the Space Sciences Series of ISSI (Inter national Space Science Institute) and the October 1997 issue of Space Science Reviews. It contains the proceedings of the first workshop in the ISSI study project on "Source and Loss Processes of Magnetospheric Plasma", which was held at ISSI in Bern on October 1-5, 1996. The participants in the project, the project team, numbered at that time 51, of whom 45 participated in the workshop. The main tasks of the first workshop were to provide a basis for the further work by means of presentation and discussion of those 16 review papers which are pub lished in this volume and to prepare plans for the work of six working groups in the year up to the second workshop in October 1997. The ISSI study project on "Source and Loss Processes of Magnetospheric Plas ma" was selected by ISSI in December 1995 as the first in the solar-terrestrial physics field after consulting a number of groups of senior scientists represent ing the international space physics community at large. The undersigned, Bengt Hultqvist, is the project leader. A Core Group, consisting of two co-chairs for each of six working groups and four ex-officio members from the Space Science Com mittee of ISSI (H. Balsiger, A. Galeev, G. Haerendel, and D. Southwood), con vened at ISSI in March 1996.

A Mechanical Analogue for the Study of Hydromagnetic Propagation in the Magnetosphere by Henry R. Radoski Pdf

The reduction of the oscillations of the magnetosphere to a simple mechanical analogue, which can be analyzed in detail, is accomplished in three stages: (1) The comparison of the wave equations for a dipole field magnetized plasma to those for a rectangular model of the plasmasphere with a unidirectional field -- the important physical characteristics are shown to be independent of the particular geometry chosen; (2) the comparison of the equations in the above hydromagnetic box with those of a mechanical system consisting of a set of oscillators, representing field lines, coupled by a wave propagating medium -- for the symmetric modes with weak ion-cyclotron coupling, the equations for the hydromagnetic and mechanical systems are essentially identical; (3) the simplification of the mechanical system to an elementary wave-oscillator model representing the coupling between resonant poloidal and toroidal modes -- the nature of the motion of this model is independent of the strength of the coupling. In general, the behavior of coupled and uncoupled modes is essentially different. When any coupling is present, steady state solutions, as normally understood, are not possible. (Author).
