A Parametric Survey of Hydrofoil Strut Flutter by Peter K. Besch,Edwin P. Rood Pdf

In order to explore the fundamental nature of hydrofoil flutter, a hydroelastic instability which is a potential cause of structural failure of lifting surfaces operating at high speeds in water, a series of hydrofoil models was tested in a towing basin. Flutter data were obtained from four surface-piercing hydrofoil strut models with various pod and foil configurations. Flutter occurred in two independent hydroelastic modes having predominantly first bending and first torsion mode shapes, respectively. The unstable modes were found to exist simultaneously in at least one strut. Flutter inception speed of the bending flutter mode was affected by strut submergence and the presence or absence of a foil. Flutter inception speed of the torsional flutter mode was dependent on strut cavitation pattern, strut submergence, pod moment of inertia, pod length, and the presence or absence of a foil. The Search for Paradise Lost by Elizabeth Ann Smith Pdf

The Search for Paradise Lost is a collection of uplifting and amusing reminiscences of Liz's travels with her husband, Alan, in Central Africa, searching for an unconventional rural environment to raise her family. In spite of many setbacks caused by the unsettled political situations, her exciting journey proves to be one of self-discovery, opening new worlds beyond her limited expectations, and leading to unusual friendships. The journey starts in 1960 in the earthy African town Zomba, Nyasaland. There, Liz discovers Paradise and revels in its untamed natural magnificence. She learns to deal with many challenges, including coping with the colonial lifestyle, nasty insects, unhygienic conditions, and encounters with leopards and witch doctor curses. Unfortunately, the magic waned with the new African independence. On returning to Rhodesia, an en-route terrorist ambush didn't dampen their enthusiasm, but taught them to cope with the ensuing war years in an isolated school in Somabula. There they adapted to pastoral life and formed friendships with locals, who were greatly amused by their lack of farming knowledge and unconventional teaching methods. Holidays were spent exploring the mystical Matopos and enjoying halcyon weeks camping in ancient Sofala in Mozambique. The tranquil palm-studded golden beaches, Portuguese wine, and abundant seafood made the perfect playground for the family. Once again, political changes forced them to leave their beloved paradise, but they carried with them heartwarming lessons and memories of a lost, unsophisticated era that can never be repeated.

Grasses, Pods, Vines, Weeds by Quentin Steitz Pdf

Purple three-awn. Tree of heaven. Alamo vine. Narrowleaf cattail. These exotic and fanciful names conjure up visions of lush foliage, colorful grasses, and dense plant life. They are, in fact, names of native and naturalized Texas plants—grasses, pods, vines, and weeds. Lovely and all-too-often overlooked in nature, they become ornamental delights when used imaginatively and decoratively. Grasses, Pods, Vines, Weeds introduces 44 of Texas' most common and important naturals. Quentin Steitz shows how to recognize them and discover their aesthetic wealth. By taking the reader through all of the steps involved in utilizing naturals—from harvest to design—her book becomes an important tool for floral and landscape designers, decorators, horticulturalists, home gardeners, botanists: all those people who enjoy hands-on experience with Texas' vast array of native and naturalized plants. The book presents clear and concise descriptions of many Texas naturals, accompanied by approximately 150 full-color photographs showing each in one or more stages of growth and also in a design. The reader can see the plant as it looks not only in the wild but also in an arrangement. The author offers techniques on how the species can be prepared for display, discussing drying and arranging. And a chapter on cultivation and conservation suggests to outdoor enthusiasts species they can grow for decorative natural materials as well as conserve and appreciate in the wild. Grasses, Pods, Vines,Weeds is enhanced by flora selected, collected, prepared, and dried by the author. These hand-culled materials have been used in designs contributed by some nineteen notable floral designers as well as the author. The text and designs combine to reveal the fresh, creative applications of Texas' decorative naturals and to increase our pleasure in the wonders of natural Texas.
