The Mark of Ran by Paul Kearney Pdf

A stunning blend of visionary storytelling and majestic prose, The Mark of Ran is a new masterpiece of imaginative fiction. In this epic adventure, Paul Kearney records the voyages of a reluctant hero, a band of outcasts, and a quest into the unknown no one has ever dared before . . . In a world abandoned by its Creator, an ancient race once existed—one with powers mankind cannot imagine. Some believe they were the last of the angels. Others think they were demons. Rol Cortishane was raised in a remote fishing village with no idea of his true place in the world. But in his veins runs the blood of this long-forgotten race and he shares their dangerous destiny. Driven from home, accused of witchcraft and black magic, Rol takes refuge in the brooding tower sanctuary of the enigmatic Michal Psellos. There Rol is trained in the assassin’s craft and tutored by the beautiful but troubled Rowen. It’s no accident that Rol and Rowen have been brought together, but the truth about their past is a secret they will have to fight to discover. Now they’ve set their sights across the sea in search of the Hidden City and an adventure that will make them legends . . . if it doesn’ t kill them first. Praise for The Mark of Ran “[A] gritty fantasy swashbuckler . . . Kearney’s crisp, often lyrical writing shines brightest when his characters take to the sea.”—Publishers Weekly “One of the very best fantasy writers around.”—Steven Erikson

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski Pdf

“A novelistic mosaic that simultaneously reads like a thriller and like a strange, dreamlike excursion into the subconscious.” —The New York Times Years ago, when House of Leaves was first being passed around, it was nothing more than a badly bundled heap of paper, parts of which would occasionally surface on the Internet. No one could have anticipated the small but devoted following this terrifying story would soon command. Starting with an odd assortment of marginalized youth -- musicians, tattoo artists, programmers, strippers, environmentalists, and adrenaline junkies -- the book eventually made its way into the hands of older generations, who not only found themselves in those strangely arranged pages but also discovered a way back into the lives of their estranged children. Now this astonishing novel is made available in book form, complete with the original colored words, vertical footnotes, and second and third appendices. The story remains unchanged, focusing on a young family that moves into a small home on Ash Tree Lane where they discover something is terribly wrong: their house is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. Of course, neither Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Will Navidson nor his companion Karen Green was prepared to face the consequences of that impossibility, until the day their two little children wandered off and their voices eerily began to return another story -- of creature darkness, of an ever-growing abyss behind a closet door, and of that unholy growl which soon enough would tear through their walls and consume all their dreams.

When the Missouri Ran Red by Jim R. Woolard Pdf

Set in the final devastating months of the American Civil War, this powerhouse of a novel from award-winning author Jim R. Woolard follows one man’s harrowing journey from Confederate captive to Union prisoner to unchained force of vengeance . . . Autumn, 1864. Rebel bushwhackers have seized and looted a small town in Missouri. Wounded and left for dead by his half-brother, seventeen-year-old Owen Wainwright is captured and conscripted by the Confederate Army. As the troops’ blacksmith, he witnesses the horrors of war firsthand: the savagery of General Selby’s Iron Brigade, the massacres of Union troops, the bloody battles at Lexington, Westport, and Mine Creek. Against all odds, Owen survives with the help of an unlikely ally—a new friend in arms and the only person he trusts. But if fate is cruel, war can be crueler . . . Caught in the crossfire of a deadly Yankee ambush, Owen is arrested and jailed in a Union prison. Beaten and brutalized by guards, he begins to give up hope—until a U.S. marshal comes to him with an unusual offer. Owen’s traitorous half-brother is wanted for murder. If Owen agrees to help the U.S. marshal infiltrate the Texas winter camp of Confederate guerillas—and bring his half-brother to justice—Owen will have both his freedom and his revenge. But the risks are great. The price of getting caught is death. Filled with raw human drama, blistering battle scenes, and vivid historical details, When the Missouri Ran Red is destined to be a classic in the field and a treasure for Civil War buffs.

The Small GTPase Ran by Mark Rush,Peter D'Eustachio Pdf

RAN: AN ATYPICAL GTPASE Mark G. Rush and Peter D'Eustachio New York University School o/Medicine. Department, o/Biochemistry New York NY 10016 ABSTRACT GTPases, proteins that bind and hydrolyze GTP (guanosine triphos- phate) are critical regulators of many metabolic pathways. Although these proteins are enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of GTP to GDP + Pi, their primary function is not the hydrolysis of GTP per se, but rather the coupling of this hydrolysis to metabolic regulation. Such coupling is gen- erally achieved through the interaction of the GTP-bound form of the GTPase with proteins known as -effectors. Effectors are often enzymes whose activities are modulated by the GTPase. However, effectors can also be structural proteins involved in assembling intracellular macromo- lecular complexes, such as actin filaments and microtubules, as well as proteins involved in the intracellular transport of proteins and RNAs. In- deed, the subject of this anthology, the small GTPase Ran, may exert most or all of its regulatory functions by interacting with non-enzyme effectors. This property of Ran distinguishes it from other well studied GTPases, and has resulted in the elucidation of novel mechanisms of Ran action that are quite distinct from previously established paradigms of GTPase function. 1. INTRODUCTION The Ras-related nuclear protein Ran is a highly conserved (80% identity among yeasts and humans) member of the Ras superfamily of small GTP binding and hydrolyzing proteins.

xMartyr by Jon Torres Pdf

Raised by a wealthy European couple in Bayville, New York, Zane struggled in his toddler and teen years with the nihilist philosophy on the meaningless of life because death was the ultimate result. With these thoughts gradually building a suicidal mind-set, Zane searched high and low for answers and sought the importance of life if there was one. Growing up, he had been conditioned by an Israeli soldier hired by his parents to train him in the arts of Krav Maga to ward off bullies and enemies during his school years. However, this would prove to become his biggest hurdle. After being denied truth from his own parents, he rebelled against them intellectually; and after inheriting a fortune from their wealth after their deaths, he used it to build a church after coming to faith. Being accused by many Christian leaders of being a false teacher for his faith-only stances, a man was sent to address him in person. He later failed to lay his life down for the crown given to those who did. Also discovering the truth of his origins, he then realized there were more answers that needed to be sought. Although he still maintained his philosophy that life was truly meaningless, instead of seeking death without purpose, he now sought death with purpose and chose to embark on his journey for martyrdom, redemption, truth, and another shot at the crown of life.

I Ran With The Gang by Alan Longmuir,Martin Knight Pdf

The Bay City Rollers were one of the brightest things to happen in the tumultuous 1970s, illuminating a dark decade marred by falling stock markets, a plummeting economy and industrial unrest. Alan Longmuir, an apprentice plumber from Edinburgh, was inspired by the Beatles to form a band. After enlisting his brother and throwing a dart at a map, they became the Bay City Rollers. In I Ran with the Gang , Alan recounts his incredible journey from the Dalry backstreets to the Hollywood hills and back again. Along the way, he punctures some of the myths and untruths that have swirled around the group, and unflinchingly tells of the acrimony and exploitation that led to the disintegration of the band. Most of all, though, Alan captures the great adventure of five young boys from Edinburgh who for a few heady years threatened to turn the whole world tartan.
