Excerpt from The Marriage, Baptismal, and Burial: Registers of the Collegiate Church or Abbey of St. Peter, Westminster In the seventh and eighth volumes of Collectanea Topographica et Genealogica, published by Messrs. Nichols and Son in 1841 and 1843, were printed certain extracts from the Registers of Westminster Abbey, from a MS. in the College of Arms, with annotations by the late Sir Charles G. Young, Garter. These extracts will be found on pages 162-174, 243-248, and 355-377 of vol. vii., and 1-21 of vol. viii., of that work. They proved a great boon to historians, biographers and genealogists, and have ever since been accepted as standard authority. A conviction that the series was imperfect, and the entries often erroneous, induced the present Editor to collate his copy with the original, and the result was so startling that it was felt that the knowledge obtained ought not to be confined to himself. In a word, it was found that the errors, both of omission and commission, were so numerous and so serious as to render the Collectanea version untrustworthy and practically worthless. In some instances, also, the identifications by the annotator of persons named in the text were found to be incorrect. It would be impossible to point out all the discrepancies revealed by a careful examination of the original Registers, and they can be ascertained only by a comparison of the two versions: some of the more flagrant errors, however, are referred to in the notes in the present volume. The late Mr. John Gough Nichols was so profoundly sensible of the injury unwittingly done to the literary world by the Collectanea version that he at once proposed to print the corrected one at his own expense, but this arrangement came to an end by reason of his untimely death. Fonthill, in Wiltshire, is traditionally associated with the writer and collector William Beckford who built his Gothic fantasy house called Fonthill Abbey at the end of the eighteenth century. The collapse of the Abbey’s tower in 1825 transformed the name Fonthill into a symbol for overarching ambition and folly, a sublime ruin. Fonthill is, however, much more than the story of one man’s excesses. Beckford’s Abbey is only one of several important houses to be built on the estate since the early sixteenth century, all of them eventually consumed by fire or deliberately demolished, and all of them oddly forgotten by historians. Little now remains: a tower, a stable block, a kitchen range, some dressed stone, an indentation in a field. Fonthill Recovered draws on histories of art and architecture, politics and economics to explore the rich cultural history of this famous Wiltshire estate. The first half of the book traces the occupation of Fonthill from the Bronze Age to the twenty-first century. Some of the owners surpassed Beckford in terms of their wealth, their collections, their political power and even, in one case, their sexual misdemeanours. They include Charles I’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, and the richest commoner in the nineteenth century. The second half of the book consists of essays on specific topics, filling out such crucial areas as the complex history of the designed landscape, the sources of the Beckfords’ wealth and their collections, and one essay that features the most recent appearance of the Abbey in a video game.

The Chapel of St Paul is the last chapel off the North Ambulatory of the Abbey. It once held the cloth in which St Paul’s head was said to have been wrapped following his execution. It is well-visited but does not feature on the Abbey’s audio guide and few visitors will be familiar with the names of the people buried and/or memorialised in the Chapel. The Chapel houses ten tombs/memorials and eight marked floor stones; yet the Abbey’s burial registers record that at least 44 people are buried here. This booklet sets out to identify them and give a brief account of their lives. The first to arrive was Henry V’s standard bearer, Sir Lewis Robessart, Lord Bourchier, who died in 1430. The last to arrive was Sir Rowland Hill, the inventor of the penny postage, who died in 1879.

The Chapel of St Nicholas is the chapel at the east end of the South Ambulatory of the Abbey. It does not feature on the Abbey’s audio guide, but is of interest for several of the individuals buried here. The only family entitled as of right to be buried in the Abbey is the family of the Duke of Northumberland. The entrance to the Northumberland vault is situated in this chapel. The vault holds 30 members of the family including the father of the founding donor of the Smithsonian Institution and the most recent arrival, the widow of the 10th Duke of Northumberland, who died in 2012. Other families well represented here are the Seymours and the Cecils. The first ‘resident’ to arrive was Philippa de Mohun, Duchess of York, who died in 1431.
