Body Parts and Bodies Whole by Katharina Rebay-Salisbury,Marie Louise Stig Sørensen,Jessica Hughes Pdf

This volume grew out of an interdisciplinary discussion held in the context of the Leverhulme-funded project 'Changing Beliefs in the Human Body', through which the image of the body in pieces soon emerged as a potent site of attitudes about the body and associated practices in many periods. Archaeologists routinely encounter parts of human and animal bodies in their excavations. Such fragmentary evidence has often been created through accidental damage and the passage of time - nevertheless, it can also signify a deliberate and meaningful act of fragmentation. As a fragment, a part may acquire a distinct meaning through its enchained relationship to the whole or alternatively it may be used in a more straightforward manner to represent the whole or even act as stand-in for other variables. This collection of papers puts bodily fragmentation into a long-term historical perspective. The temporal spread of the papers collected here indicates both the consistent importance and the varied perception of body parts in the archaeological record of Europe and the Near East. By bringing case studies together from a range of locations and time periods, each chapter brings a different insight to the role of body parts and body wholes and explores the status of the body in different cultural contexts. Many of the papers deal directly with the physical remains of the dead body, but the range of practices and representations covered in this volume confirm the sheer variability of treatments of the body throughout human history. Every one of the contributions shows how looking at how the human body is divided into pieces or parts can give us deeper insights into the beliefs of the particular society which produced these practices and representations.

SHE’S ROUGH… After being terrorized by an evil tyrant, Hilda Berdottir, a no-nonsense Viking woman, established a Dark Age sanctuary for abused women.. And they are not only surviving, but have been thriving for five years now. Everything is perfect, except that the women have begun to yearn for the one thing that is a danger to their lives. Men! Oh, not for their companionship, but for their seed…as in children. They want to bed them, then shed them, not wed them. Holy Thor! Good thing there are no men around. Until… HE’S READY… Torolf Magnusson and his team of Navy SEALs are cruising along a Norwegian fjord like bleepin’ tourists when their reproduction Viking longship wrecks, and they somehow find themselves back in the tenth century outside a medieval version of a woman’s shelter. And the females women there are trying everything in their erotic repertoire to lure the men into their bed furs. Hoo-yah! Except for Hilda who wants nothing to do with Torolf. Until… TOGETHER, THEY’RE A MATCH… After Torolf and his comrades-in-arms rid the old Norse world of the villainous Steinolf, they return to present-day California. But oops! Somehow, Torolf accidentally brings Hilda along for the ride through time and space. What’s a guy to do when suddenly responsible for a reluctant girlfriend who is being stalked by a mad scientist bent on dissecting her thousand-year-old body? Viking Manifesto by Steve Strid,Claes Andréasson Pdf

The Vikings went from making wine snifters from the skulls of their enemies to selling furniture in flat boxes. They took civilization based on pillaging and plundering and gave us The Nobel Prize and IKEA. The Vikings are back, and this time they mean business. The Viking Manifesto is a call to arms for a new way of doing business. It's about having an original idea and a different way of making it happen. The ancient Vikings got rich with swords and fast ships; the modern ones with safe cars (Volvo) and sippable vodka (Absolut). Both broke the rules. Both came from nowhere to take the world by storm. This book reveals how Scandinavian companies are making a huge impact on the business landscape, and what lessons other companies can learn from them. It is a book that will astonish, inspire and amuse.

In the Shadow of the Shtetl by Jeffrey Veidlinger Pdf

The story of how the Holocaust decimated Jewish life in the shtetls of Eastern Europe is well known. Still, thousands of Jews in these small towns survived the war and returned afterward to rebuild their communities. The recollections of some 400 returnees in Ukraine provide the basis for Jeffrey Veidlinger's reappraisal of the traditional narrative of 20th-century Jewish history. These elderly Yiddish speakers relate their memories of Jewish life in the prewar shtetl, their stories of survival during the Holocaust, and their experiences living as Jews under Communism. Despite Stalinist repressions, the Holocaust, and official antisemitism, their individual remembrances of family life, religious observance, education, and work testify to the survival of Jewish life in the shadow of the shtetl to this day.

Medieval English Nunneries c. 1275 to 1535 by Eileen Power Pdf

Eileen Edna Power's 'Medieval English Nunneries c. 1275 to 1535' offers a thorough exploration of the social and religious history of English nunneries during the Middle Ages. Power draws from a wide range of sources, including wills, account rolls, and visitation documents, to provide a detailed picture of life inside these cloistered communities. From the motivations of the women who took the veil to the financial difficulties that plagued many nunneries, Power delves into the day-to-day realities of monastic life. She also addresses controversies such as the moral state of nunneries, and the attempts at reform made by external authorities. This book is a fascinating and meticulously researched account of a little-understood aspect of medieval England.
