The Mastery (Classic Reprint) by Mark Lee Luther Pdf

Excerpt from The Mastery Two men who looked brothers, but were uncle and nephew, smoked in the shade of a deck awning of a Hudson River day boat. "It will mean big money for you," said the younger. "Yes," Philip Drew assented, "if politics doesn't queer the deal, I shall be a rich man." "A millionnaire?" "Perhaps." After a moment's revery he added half to himself: "A million dollars! I wonder what my mother would have said? Lafayette County thought father a Vanderbilt because he had fifteen or twenty thousand dollars tucked away in farm mortgages." Young Harris was too engrossed with his personal day-dreams to speculate about his grandparents. "I'll come pretty near moving into Easy Street myself," he laughed. The Secret of Progress (Classic Reprint) by W. Cunningham Pdf

Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Evolution and the Need of Atonement (Classic Reprint) by Stewart Andrew McDowall Pdf

Excerpt from Evolution and the Need of Atonement As the title indicates, the main object of this book is not to offer a new theory of the Atonement. Rather it is intended to Show that when the origin and history of man are studied from the scientific, and especially the biological side, the spiritual life, its partial failure, and the need for Atonement, far from receding into vagueness and unreality, are thrown into strong relief. Culturgeschichtliche Novellen by W. H. Riehl Pdf

Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. A Book of Cambridge Verse (Classic Reprint) by Ernest Edward Kellett Pdf

Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. The Mastery Series by Thomas Prendergast Pdf

Excerpt from The Mastery Series: Latin 7, - Considering that sentences constitute language, speech is nothing more than the diversification of a stock of mastered sen tenoes. The process is very tedious in infancy; but when a child eight or ten years old is thrown entirely on its own resources, and has to pick up at haphazard, to discriminate, to interpret, to analyse, and to master a stock of useful sentences from amongst the rapid and puzzling utterances of foreigners, its profusion of idiomatic speech at the end of three months, is a marvel, the sources of which have been left too long unexplored. The Mastery of Power by Thomas Van Ness Pdf

Excerpt from The Mastery of Power: The Secret of Attainment Let man have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth. - Gen. 1:26. Possibly many of us are acquainted with the juvenile rhymes that tell of the little boy who wishes he were a sea pirate, an Indian, a soldier, prize fighter, or some one else equally forceful and terrible. About three years ago I brought home from England a superbly illustrated book of the Lives of the Saints to my own small son. It awakened in him but a languid interest. He listened to the reading of one of the biographies but after that the book was put on the shelf. On the other hand his well worn copy of Grimm's Household Tales is very greatly treasured. He delights to hear, day after day, of the wonderful exploits of certain magicians and fairies, for their marvellous power over wind and water and land and hidden treasures fascinates his imagination. Watch a number of boys at play. At first it is an imitation of horse and driver; each boy wishes to be the driver, to tame the wild horse, or it is the coming of the fire engines or by and by the lurking red men with their blood-curdling war whoops, or the battle between the Knights of Chivalry or a mimic war between Spaniard and American. The Mastery of Destiny (Classic Reprint) by Associate Professor of Philosophy James Allen,James Allen Pdf

Excerpt from The Mastery of Destiny The discovery of the law of Evolution in the material world has prepared men for a knowledge of the law of cause and effect in the, mental world.' Thought is not less orderly and progressive than the material forms which embody thought; and not alone cells and atoms, but thoughts and deeds are charged with a cumulative and selective energy. In the realm of thought and deed, the good survives, for it is fittest; the evil ultimately perishes. To know that the perfect law of Causation is as all embracing in mind as in matter, is to be relieved from all anxiety concerning.
