The Meaning of Democracy (Classic Reprint) by Ivor John Carnegie Brown Pdf

Excerpt from The Meaning of Democracy This book has been written simply as an essay in definition, an attempt to show what democracy, stripped clean of its false clothing, does imply. It is not a constructive book, if by that phrase is meant an effort to solve constitutional and social problems. Each of these problems has a considerable literature of its own and must be dealt with on its own merits. But it is, I hope. The Limits of Pure Democracy (Classic Reprint) by W. H. Mallock Pdf

Excerpt from The Limits of Pure Democracy Let us now consider what these definitions come to, beginning with the first and most famous of them. This definition consists of three separate statements firstly, that Democracy is government of the people; secondly, that it is government for the people; and, thirdly, that it is government by the people. It is obvious that the first purports to enunciate something which, however profound, can at once be grasped by everybody; whilst the second adds something more pro found and distinctive still, and that both lead up to the cumulative profundity of the last. Let us ask, then, what intelligible meaning can be possibly read into each. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Irresistible Movement of Democracy (Classic Reprint) by John Simpson Penman Pdf

Excerpt from The Irresistible Movement of Democracy The object of this book is to tell the story of democracy from its first beginnings in the modern world until its culmination in our time. The idea was first suggested to me by trying to under stand what was meant by the famous phrase used during the world war, - to make the world safe for democracy. It sug gested the questions, What was democracy? What were the advantages of a form of government for which the world was striving? If democracy was attained, would it be a gain for humanity? Democracy has always been difficult of definition and much misunderstanding of its true nature has arisen because men have used the term in different senses. Democracy may mean either a spirit of society, a state of society, or a form of government. I have taken democracy in the usual meaning as accepted by Bryce, Lecky and Maine, as a form of popular government. In this general sense it has been used by modern writers, and its modern advent dates from the time when nations and men began to seek a form of government based upon the popular will as expressed in universal suffrage. What Is Democracy? (Classic Reprint) by L. H. Bailey Pdf

Excerpt from What Is Democracy? Revolt from tyranny is not democracy. This is the throwing-off of intolerable burdens that prevent democracy; and as democracy has been prevented, so is there no preparation for it and anarchy results. The tyrannized people go to excess, knowing not the civic restraint of self-discipline. Excess is the Oppo site of democracy. The red revolutions of past and present are the negation of democracy, although the released people may eventually become democratic. Democracy is more stable than despotism. The Spirit of Democracy (Classic Reprint) by Charles Fletcher Dole Pdf

Excerpt from The Spirit of Democracy IT is my purpose in this book to show what real democratic government is. People have studied the outside of the body of democracy; they have hardly begun to know what makes its life, or upon what its good health depends. Democracy is on trial in the world, on a more colossal scale than ever before. Its friends per haps never faced more difficult problems. Neither have they ever had so much reason to hope for success. The History of Democracy by Jonathan Norcross Pdf

Excerpt from The History of Democracy: Considered as a Party Name and as a Political Organization Republicanism as a party name, and some dark stains upon its history. If so, it is the duty of some patriot to point them out. I shall content myself with exposing and commenting upon Democracy as a party name and organization. And I trust it will be by no means difficult to show that the word used as a party name or title has almost invariably proved to be, in practice, as far from the abstract or popular meaning of the word as the east is from the west, or as darkness is from light. It, then, this charge can be established from the history of Democracy, such a party ought not to exist, and cannot exist without endangering free institutions and the representative form of government. But if the charge be not well founded, or if it will apply as well to any other party or party name, then the benefits to arise from its investigation should stimulate patriots to enter upon the work. From such an investigation would likely come a truer estimation and correction of party abuses, and a higher elevation and purification of the means for maintaining free government and equal rights, and consequently greater security and safety for the people. But of all this the reader must judge as we proceed with these historical sketches. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Democracy by James H. Hyslop Pdf

Excerpt from Democracy: A Study of Government Destruction, and this very confession of solicitude involved in such concessions affords some invigora tion for the forces of reaction. When the idolaters of democracy begin to falter or to retreat it is time for the philosophers to take courage. That the status of political conditions is what it is here rep resented to be can best be shown by comparing the work of Mr. Lecky with that of De Tocqueville, and both with the political circumstances in which they arose. The False Assumptions of Democracy (Classic Reprint) by Anthony M. Ludovici Pdf

Excerpt from The False Assumptions of Democracy Now the supreme importance of abstract or general terms lies in the fact that they are the words with which we guide our lives, mark out our goals and direct our effort. It is therefore urgently necessary that they should stand for very precise ideas, and that as the current coinage of speech they should mean the same things to all men of the same group, body, or nation. As opposed to the effort of the Middle Ages, however, the effort of this Age, or the Muddle Age, seems to be directed towards turning every nation into a Europe - into a unit, that is to say, without unity. And this lack Of unity is nowhere more acute and more apparent than in the realm of abstract or general terms. People Of the same nation, nowadays, no longer speak the same language. They no longer mean the same things, or convey the same ideas, when they speak Of Happiness, Beauty, Order, Right, Freedom, Liberty, Justice, etc. The frame has gone. The common culture has been replaced by a congeries Of pseudo-cultures, all in active conflict. The consequence is that the all-important words Of this class have fallen out of place in the design Of life they have no unifying whole in which they can find a stable position, they are. At a loose end, so to speak, and they can be used not as intelligent missives, but only as missiles between isolated groups and parties that are doomed to eternal conflict. A word at a loose end, however, is a word devoid Of definite associations and therefore Of meaning. Can a word devoid of meaning be used as a missile? Certainly it can, provided that it be given, despite its loss of an intellectual appeal, sufficient motive power to provoke an emotion. But of this anon. Liberty and Democracy and Other Essays in War-Time (Classic Reprint) by Hartley Burr Alex Pdf

Excerpt from Liberty and Democracy and Other Essays in War-Time But while a programme of reconstruction is yet to make, it may be worth a word here to define the line which the author's thinking repeatedly brings him to believe such te construction must follow. This is the educa tional, not in any narrow scholastic way, but broadly, touching the whole life of the citizen and the whole endeavour of the state. Democracy can only flourish where the citi zens are both intelligent and alert, intelligent as to the purposes of their society and alert as to the means of attaining these: unceasing vigilance is the preserver of freedom, but this must be accompanied by a no less unceasing consideration of the ends of human life if the liberty is to be worth preserving. He who would duly enquire about the best form of the state ought first to determine which is the most eligible life. Aristotle's aphorism is the core of political wisdom; and its applied meaning can only be that the citizen who is a true warden of his rights must be an athlete of the mind, forever trained and in training. The problem of due training is the problem of political self-preservation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Powers and Aims of Western Democracy (Classic Reprint) by William Milligan Sloane Pdf

Excerpt from The Powers and Aims of Western Democracy The following pages were in type before the recent Treaty of Versailles was completed and signed. In consequence of this there are of necessity occasional verbal ineptitudes not fitting the moment of publica tion, and for these the author asks friendly consider ation. But what he began to write before the period of the Great War and has completed within it, is his deliberate opinion: that democracy is in its essence conservative, that the drift toward socialism is an attack on its very life, that the democratic nation is the best form of human association so far devised, and that neither democracy nor nationality insures enduring peace. It is a tremendous gain that the concept both of lasting peace and a republic of man kind is at last considered a working hypothesis, even if fulfilment be postponed. Privilege and Democracy in America (Classic Reprint) by Frederic C. Howe Pdf

Excerpt from Privilege and Democracy in America Down to the beginning of the nineteenth century government was merely the will of a class. Politics mirrored the wish of the privileged orders. And the motive which inspired the governing classes was primarily an economic one. This interpretation of politics has only begun to influence the writing of history. Yet in this motive is to be found the cause of wars and of peace, of intrigue and of diplomacy, of force and of fraud, of practically all legislation relating to religion, taxation, industry, and the rela tion of classes. The struggles of kings and parlia ments, of burghers and peasants, of cities and over lords had their origin in the desire to use the agencies of government for the advantage of one or the other of the contending orders. We have only to study the Parliamentary struggle which has just closed in Great Britain, to see a confirmation of this fact. In this instance the conflict was carried on by peaceful means. But the motive of the struggle was the same. It was a warfare of classes, organized through parties instead of with armed retainers, but bent on the control of the govern ment for economic advantage. Unforeseen Tendencies of Democracy (Classic Reprint) by Edwin L. Godkin Pdf

Excerpt from Unforeseen Tendencies of Democracy I have endeavored in the following pages, not to describe democracy, something which has been done by abler hands than mine, but to describe some of the departures it has made from the ways which its earlier promoters ex pected it to follow. It has done a great many things which they never thought it would do, and has left undone a great many things which they thought it would do. Not nearly all the deductions from the principle of equality have been correct. The growth of democracy has dis sipated a good many fears about the mob but on the other hand it has failed to realize a good many expectations about its conduct of government. Nearly all the philosophers, from Tocqueville down, and especially the English Radicals of the earlier part of the century, would be surprised by some of its developments. No democratic state comes anywhere near their ideal. Unexpected desires and prejudices have revealed themselves.
