The Mechanics Of Scour In The Marine Environment by Jorgen Fredsoe,B Mutlu Sumer Pdf

This book treats the subject of local scour around different kinds of marine structures, exposed to waves and/or currents. The first, major part of the book is devoted to marine pipelines, describing in detail all kinds of scour scenarios, and also making recommendations for scour protection. Other kinds of structures considered are single piles (slender or large), groups of piles, complex subsea structures, breakwaters, and seawalls. The scour due to ship propellers is also described. The book deals mainly with the scour in noncohesive sediment but, whenever possible, available literature on the scour in finer sediment has been incorporated. In addition, a chapter on the impact of wave-induced liquefaction is included. The authors' aim is to describe in detail the hydrodynamic processes causing the erosion. With a hydrodynamic understanding, it is easier for the consulting engineer to predict scour in those many cases where physical model tests are not available.

Renewable Energy in Marine Environment by Eugen Rusu Pdf

The effects of human-caused global warming are obvious, requiring new strategies and approaches. The concept of business-as-usual is now no longer beneficial. Extraction of renewable energy in marine environments represents a viable solution and an important path for the future. These huge renewable energy resources in seas and oceans can be harvested, including wind, tide, and waves. Despite the initial difficulties related mostly to the elevated operational risks in the harsh marine environment, newly developed technologies are economically effective or promising. Simultaneously, many challenges remain to be faced. These are the main issues targeted by the present book, which is associated with the Special Issue of Energies Journal entitled “Renewable Energy in Marine Environment”. Papers on innovative technical developments, reviews, case studies, and analytics, as well as assessments, and papers from different disciplines that are relevant to the topic are included. From this perspective, we hope that the results presented are of interest to for scientists and those in related fields such as energy and marine environments, as well as for a wider audience.

Marine Geo-Hazards in China by Yin-can YE Pdf

Marine Geo-Hazards in China, the first book to focus specifically on potential marine geological hazards in China, includes 19 chapters with varying focus on key issues surrounding the topic. Early chapters discuss the historical background, research progress, and geological environments in China's sea area. Next, multiple chapters present special topics on geological hazards in China's sea area, including its disaster pregnant environment, mechanisms of disaster change, the development regularity and disaster formation process, and existing or potential dangers and countermeasures. Final chapters present the latest information on the distribution, development, assessment, and risk analysis of marine geological hazards. This book is an important source of information for government and local policymakers, environmental and marine scientists, and engineers. Discusses the background, current research, and systematically reviews the history, major advances in the studies in the field, and demonstrates the development prospect of this subject. Contains and summarizes the author’s longstanding achievements in the field, as well as includes a wide range of researches conducted both locally and overseas. Systematically summarizes the basic characteristics of the distribution and development of the main types of geological hazards in China seas. Puts forward the scheme of marine geological disaster regionalization of China, and is significant for researches in other countries or regions.

Scour and Erosion by Liang Cheng,Scott Draper,Hongwei An Pdf

The 7th International Conference on Scour and Erosion (ICSE 2014) was organised by the School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering and the Centre for Offshore Foundation Systems at the University of Western Australia under the guidance of the Technical Committee 213 for Scour and Erosion of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE). This biennial conference draws together leading academics, scientists and engineers engaged in scour and erosion research to present and exchange their latest scientific findings. These proceedings, together with the six previous proceedings dating from 2002, present a rare collection of technical and scientific developments in scour and erosion research which have been established over the last 12 years. This book includes state-of-the-art papers in scour and erosion from ICSE 2014, covering the 6 themes of: internal erosion, sediment transport, advanced numerical modelling of scour and erosion, terrestrial scour and erosion, river/bridge scour and erosion, and marine scour and erosion. The proceedings include 5 keynote lectures from world leading researches cutting across the themes of scour and erosion, together with 87 peer-reviewed papers from 19 countries. This book is ideal for researchers and industry working at the forefront of scour and erosion, both with application to rivers and marine operations.

Electromagnetic Boundary Problems by Edward F. Kuester,David C. Chang Pdf

Electromagnetic Boundary Problems introduces the formulation and solution of Maxwell’s equations describing electromagnetism. Based on a one-semester graduate-level course taught by the authors, the text covers material parameters, equivalence principles, field and source (stream) potentials, and uniqueness, as well as: Provides analytical solutions of waves in regions with planar, cylindrical, spherical, and wedge boundaries Explores the formulation of integral equations and their analytical solutions in some simple cases Discusses approximation techniques for problems without exact analytical solutions Presents a general proof that no classical electromagnetic field can travel faster than the speed of light Features end-of-chapter problems that increase comprehension of key concepts and fuel additional research Electromagnetic Boundary Problems uses generalized functions consistently to treat problems that would otherwise be more difficult, such as jump conditions, motion of wavefronts, and reflection from a moving conductor. The book offers valuable insight into how and why various formulation and solution methods do and do not work.

Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries by Michael Elliott,Andrew Wither Pdf

Environmental Consequences and Management of Coastal Industries: Terms and Concepts covers the engineering, natural and social sciences aspects related to coastal power plants and their operation and management. The book gives background to featured problems and solutions, making it relevant to power plants in all global situations and giving practitioners what they need to assess environmental consequences. In addition, the book indicates, defines and illustrates the terms and concepts used worldwide. This is important as engineers and scientists often have an imperfect understanding of the requirements of each other, and similar (in some cases identical) terms may have very different meanings. Users will find this to be a simple and accessible guide to the terminology used and concepts covered. Individual entries are complete in themselves, but still cross referenced to other entries where additional information may be found. This provides quick-and-easy access to the required information. Provides a unique approach that acts as a first-stop-shop for complementary interests with entries presented on separate pages Presents multidisciplinary content, thus ensuring that different functions understand others’ priorities and concerns Includes comprehensive content with wide ranging coverage written by experts with many decades of experience in environmental aspects of coastal power plans and other industries
