The Memoirs of General Turner Ashby and His Compeers, Annotated Edition by Rev. James Avirett Pdf

This is a thorough biography of Turner Ashby, who achieved immortality with his gallant ultimate sacrifice in the early part of the War Between the State's Shenandoah Valley Campaign. Ashby was the beau ideal of the Confederacy, and really its first hero -- the one who set the standard for the Southern warrior-knight defending home and hearth. The Chaplain of the 7th Virginia Cavalry, James B. Avirett, who knew Ashby intimately, gives us an exciting look at life in what came to be known as the "Laurel Brigade." Originally published in 1867, it is a book for the "arm-chair historian" and academic alike. While many reprints have been done, this one has been re-typeset by a real person, and not by Optical Character Recognition software. There are unobtrusive explanations of Latin phrases and other archaic terms to aid the reader, but these have been kept to a minimum. This edition contains a bonus chapter courtesy of the Reverend Doctor Rondel Rumburg, former Chaplain-in-Chief of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, and presently scholar in residence at the Society for Biblical and Southern Studies in Appomattox County, Virginia. This is a book that will be read for pure pleasure and that will be referenced again and again. It belongs on the shelf of every Southern partisan.

Life of Turner Ashby (Classic Reprint) by Thomas A. Ashby Pdf

Excerpt from Life of Turner Ashby In the preparation of this history of the life of Turner Ashby the author has tried to give a correct picture of the man and the soldier. Having drawn his information from different sources, he wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to the vari ous historians of the Civil War who have written of Ashby. In 1867, the Rev. J as. B. Avirett, who was the Chaplain of the Seventh Virginia Cavalry, and who was intimately associated with Ashby during his entire military career, - wrote the Memoirs of General Turner Ashby and his Compeers, a book that has long been out of print. It was at the earnest solicitation of Dr. Avirett that the author was induced to prepare the present Life of Ashby. Not illustrated. 1867 edition. Excerpt: ... MEMOIR OF LIEUT.-COLONEL THOMAS MARSHALL. IT is ever an arduous task to get the world to recognize the merit of a man (no matter what his intrinsic worth may be), who during the course of his life has simply done his duty, unless the performance of it leads him into some position which attracts public attention. An individual possessing probably ordinary uprightness, intelligence, or ability, may take advantage of an opportunity which fortune throws in his way, to venture out beyond the circle which public opinion has drawn around us and calls the strict line of duty, and become at once a centre of attraction and an object of interest;-- it matters not how frequent and how deep may be his shrinkings within the circle, one or two overshots cover the depressions, and surround the person with a misty reputation which ofttimes increases in the eye of the public to a halo of glory, answering the double purpose of hiding his faults from the undiscerning, and rendering it too unpopular and ungrateful a task for the real critic to expose. Modest worth, though concealed by its own nature, will eventually exert its influence; and strict uprightness erects for itself a monument more lasting than the tinsel of public applause. That man's memory deserves most from his fellow-men, who, during the whole course of his life, has made it his effort to follow strictly the way marked out by his conscience, to disregard alike the blandishments and flattery of popular praise and the inducements which are so strongly held out by the ease and power of riches to let honesty be regulated by policy; that man, who never "crook'd the pregnant hinges of the knee, that thrift might follow ( 276 ) fawning," but from the age of discretion to the hour of his death...

The Shenandoah Valley Campaigns, Omnibus E-book by Gary W. Gallagher Pdf

This Omnibus ebook contains the two-volume collection of essays, edited by Gary Gallagher, that covers the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns of 1862 and 1864. 1862: This volume explores the Shenandoah Valley campaign, best known for its role in establishing Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's reputation as the Confederacy's greatest military idol. The authors address questions of military leadership, strategy and tactics, the campaign's political and social impact, and the ways in which participants' memories of events differed from what is revealed in the historical sources. In the process, they offer valuable insights into one of the Confederacy's most famous generals, those who fought with him and against him, the campaign's larger importance in the context of the war, and the complex relationship between history and memory. The contributors are Jonathan M. Berkey, Keith S. Bohannon, Peter S. Carmichael, Gary W. Gallagher, A. Cash Koeniger, R. E. L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, and William J. Miller. 1864: Generally regarded as the most important Civil War military operation conducted in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, the campaign of 1864 lasted more than four months and claimed more than 25,000 casualties. Beyond the loss of agricultural bounty to the Confederacy and the boost in Union morale a victory would bring, events in the Valley also would affect Abraham Lincoln's chances for reelection in the November 1864 presidential canvass. The eleven original essays in this volume reexamine common assumptions about the campaign, its major figures, and its significance. Taking advantage of the most recent scholarship and a wide range of primary sources, contributors consider strategy and tactics, the performances of key commanders on each side, the campaign's political repercussions, and the experiences of civilians caught in the path of the armies. The contributors are William W. Bergen, Keith S. Bohannon, Andre M. Fleche, Gary W. Gallagher, Joseph T. Glatthaar, Robert E. L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, William J. Miller, Aaron Sheehan-Dean, William G. Thomas, and Joan Waugh. The editor is Gary W. Gallagher.
