The Messiah Idea in Jewish History by Julius H. Greenstone Pdf

Rabbi Greenstone's valued work, The Messiah Idea in Jewish History, offers a detailed survey, from Biblical times down to the religious reform movements and Zionism of the late 19th century, of messianic beliefs in Judaism. As Greenstone's introduction mentions: "The belief in the coming of the Messiah, the treasured hope of the Jew throughout all the centuries of misery and persectuion, is regarded by most Jewish thinkers as a dogma of Judaism." The author pays special attention to Talmudic and Midrashic sources, to the work of philosophers and Kabbalists, as well as the historical conditions, to elucidate the influences messianism had on Jewish society over the centuries.

The Messiah Idea in Jewish History (Classic Reprint) by Julius H. Greenstone Pdf

Excerpt from The Messiah Idea in Jewish History The belief in the coming of the Messiah, the treasured hope of the Jew throughout all the centuries of misery and persecution, is regarded by most Jewish thinkers as a dog ma of Judaism. Some of them, indeed, would not make this belief essential to Juda ism. They consider it merely as a branch, or corollary to others more important, but almost all agree that the belief in the coming of a Messiah is an important feature of Judaism. The nature and limitations of this dogma, however, remained unsettled, the Jewish authorities differing widely in their conception of it, according to the intellectual and material position of the people at their respective times. The Jewish Messiah by James Drummond Pdf

Excerpt from The Jewish Messiah: A Critical History of the Messianic Idea Among the Jews From the Rise of the Maccabees to the Closing of the Talmud I thought this practice would seem pedantic, and have therefore conformed to the usual spelling. In quoting Biblical passages I have generally followed the Authorised Version, unless some critical reason con nected with the subject under discussion required a departure from it. In translating the numerous extracts from non-biblical works, I have studied accuracy rather than elegance. These extracts are so c0pious, because the manner in which the thought is expressed is quite as important as the thought itself, and by reading the very words of these ancient writings we are brought into closer contact with the mental condition to which the Messianic doctrine appealed, and in which it found its nutriment and strength. The Jewish Messiah by James Drummond Pdf

Excerpt from The Jewish Messiah: A Critical History of the Messianic Idea Among the Jews From the Rise of the Maccabees to the Closing of the Talmud The object of the present work is twofold. It endeavours to exhibit, in a properly classified form, the doctrine concerning the Messiah, as it was held among the Jews in the centuries during which Christianity appeared; and, as subsidiary to this main purpose, it seeks to introduce the English reader, more fully than has hitherto been done, to the Apocalyptic and kindred literature. In accepting this literature as in any way a trustworthy expression of Jewish belief, we run counter to the judgment of so high an authority as Jost, who pronounces it to be destitute of value in the history of Jewish religion. It cannot, I think, be denied that Christian scholars have been inclined to attach too much importance to works of this kind. Messianic Prophecy by Charles Augustus Briggs Pdf

Excerpt from Messianic Prophecy: The Prediction of the Fulfillment of Redemption Through the Messiah The present volume traces the Messianic idea in its development in the Old Testament Scriptures. It does not enter into the Messianic idea of the apocryphal books, or of the Apocalypses, or of the Jewish sects of the four centuries, in the midst of which the first advent occurred, because the Messianic idea of the Old Testament is complete in the canon of the Old Testament. The Messianic ideas of the later Jews have their proper place as an external historical frame in which to set the Messianic idea of Christ and His apostles. Jewish Mythology, Or the Coming of the Messiah (Classic Reprint) by Thomas Frederick Page Pdf

Excerpt from Jewish Mythology, or the Coming of the Messiah Letter-signs were understood to be astronomically significant; which meant that the history of individuals and nations was written in the heavens, and that the fulfilment was all experienced on time, as those letter-signs came to earth by divisions of time, and applied to names of things on the surface of the earth. Letters, and figures designating numbers, were understood as having bearings on the heavens by law of quadrature. This gave all points of the compass and gravitation. On these bear ings, all letters, syllables, words, and compounds had, first, an earthly meaning which bear on their bodily lives. Then, by vowels and division by puns, the same vocal music accompanied them on as souls into the realms of the future, where the same signs were used but the pronunciation lost to earthly articulation. This arrangement of language in space, with the bearings given, was the Temple of the Jews. T ms was the way it was built without the sound of hammer. This temple was destroyed again and again, as the people of the Jewish nation refused to accept it, or, through ignorance, could not see anything in it. The man who built the temple for the Jews was understood to be the Messiah, without any regard to his name. The names were different at different epochs of time, because the heavenly sheet of sign arrangement, slowly revolving all the time, brought it about.
