The Messiah Confrontation by Israel Knohl Pdf

The Messiah Confrontation casts new and fascinating light on why Jesus was killed. Grounded in meticulous research on the messianism debates in the Bible and during the Second Temple period, biblical scholar Israel Knohl argues that Jesus’s trial was in reality a dramatic clash between two Jewish groups holding opposing ideologies of messianism and anti-messianism, with both ideologies running through the Bible. The Pharisees (forefathers of the rabbinic sages) and most of the Jewish people had a conception of a Messiah similar to Jesus: like the prophets and most psalmists, they expected the arrival of a godlike Messiah. However, the judges who sentenced Jesus to death were Sadducees, who were fighting with the Pharisees largely because they repudiated the Messiah idea. Thus, the trial of Jesus was not a clash between Jewish and what would become Christian doctrines but a confrontation between two internal Jewish positions—expecting a Messiah or rejecting the Messiah idea—in which Jesus and the Pharisees were actually on the same side. Knohl contends that had the assigned judges been Pharisees rather than Sadducees, Jesus would not have been convicted and crucified. The Pharisees’ disagreement with Jesus was solely over whether Jesus was the Messiah—but historically, for Jews, arguing about who was or wasn’t the Messiah was not uncommon. The Messiah Confrontation has far-reaching consequences for the relationship between Christians and Jews.

The Messianic Confrontation by Peter Krul,Maria J Krul Pdf

THE MESSIANIC CONFRONTATION is based on the perception that the Lord showed the Prophet Daniel (Dan. 12:9) and the Apostle John (Rev. 10:4) a vision and then commanded to seal what they heard until the Last Days (Dan. 12:9). A study of the two scriptures reveals that both visions had the same background. This signifies that the two servants sealed the same knowledge. The divine command of the sealing renders the traditional scenarios about the sealing to be spurious, premature interpretations of the Scriptures. Apparently independent from the Scriptures, the Lord showed the Prophet Isaiah in a vision that during the Last Days, the Law of God would be established (Isaiah 2:1-4.) A study of the knowledge that was sealed reveals that Isaiah implied the sealing of the Law of God. The implied sealing was to ensure that the people would not prematurely discover the profound nature of the knowledge that was sealed. When the people would study the sealed Law, they would discern the link to the Isaiah vision. The sealed Law is not a law of commandments, but a law of creation. The Law primarily reveals a creation model, which in a definitive setting, establishes two fundamental profound precepts: one, God exists without having been created; two, Jesus Christ is the only way to God. Furthermore, the Law reveals the Scenario for the transition to Paradise of the people who profess that Jesus Christ is the Messiah. The Law has the potential to reveal the truth about Christ. The Law also reveals the destiny of the people who do not make the transition.

Religion, Science, and Magic : In Concert and in Conflict by Jacob Neusner Professor of Religion University of South Florida,Ernest S. Frerichs Director Brown University Program in Judaic Studies,Paul Virgil McCracken Flesher Assistant Professor of the History and Literature of Religion Northwestern University Pdf

Every culture makes the distinction between "true religion" and magic, regarding one action and its result as "miraculous," while rejecting another as the work of the devil. Surveying such topics as Babylonian witchcraft, Jesus the magician, magic in Hasidism and Kabbalah, and magic in Anglo-Saxon England, these ten essays provide a rigrous examination of the history of this distinction in Christianity and Judaism. Written by such distinguished scholars as Jacob Neusner, Hans Penner, Howard Kee, Tzvi Abusch, Susan R. Garrett, and Moshe Idel, the essays explore a broad range of topics, including how certain social groups sort out approved practices and beliefs from those that are disapproved--providing fresh insight into how groups define themselves; "magic" as an insider's term for the outsider's religion; and the tendency of religious traditions to exclude the magical. In addition the collection provides illuminating social, cultural, and anthropological explanations for the prominence of the magical in certain periods and literature.

Judaism and Christianity in the Age of Constantine by Jacob Neusner Pdf

With the conversion of Constantine in 312, Christianity began a period of political and cultural dominance that it would enjoy until the twentieth century. Jacob Neusner contradicts the prevailing view that following Christianity's ascendancy, Judaism continued to evolve in isolation. He argues that because of the political need to defend its claims to religious authenticity, Judaism was forced to review itself in the context of a triumphant Christianity. The definition of issues long discussed in Judaism—the meaning of history, the coming of the Messiah, and the political identity of Israel—became of immediate and urgent concern to both parties. What emerged was a polemical dialogue between Christian and Jewish teachers that was unprecedented. In a close analysis of texts by the Christian theologians Eusebius, Aphrahat, and Chrysostom on one hand, and of the central Jewish works the Talmud of the Land of Israel, the Genesis Rabbah, and the Leviticus Rabbah on the other, Neusner finds that both religious groups turned to the same corpus of Hebrew scripture to examine the same fundamental issues. Eusebius and Genesis Rabbah both address the issue of history, Chrysostom and the Talmud the issue of the Messiah, and Aphrahat and Leviticus Rabbah the issue of Israel. As Neusner demonstrates, the conclusions drawn shaped the dialogue between the two religions for the rest of their shared history in the West.

Compassionate Confrontation by James Evans Pdf

Compassionate Confrontation is a compelling look at the cultural challenges facing the twenty-first century Christian. Written in a practical and direct style, the book presents a biblical alternative to the "take back the culture" and "stay out of the culture" agendas that are advocated by well-meaning Christians. It dares Christians to take God's Truth into the public arena where absolutes and Truth have been replaced by speculations and lies. Full of battlefield stories and biblical references, the book presents a balanced look at the American culture and the biblical role of the church within it. The author calls for Christians to compassionately confront a dying world with the life-giving Truth found in God's Word and demonstrated in the lives of true Christians. His passionate, logical exhortation to the church is based on biblical truth, shaped by the teachings of Francis Schaeffer, and tested in the trenches of experience. Jim Evans has been married to his wife, Joan, for thirty-one years. He is the father of four grown children and has two grandchildren. He received his undergraduate degree from Lancaster Bible College and his graduate degree from Palm Beach Atlantic University. He has established two churches, directed a mission to Haiti, and is currently engaged in conference speaking and assisting national preachers in Africa, India, and Eastern Europe. He has also served as a Christian lobbyist in New York, worked as police liaison for the anti-abortion group, Operation Rescue, was imprisoned for opposing abortion, testified in federal courts, and debated with opponents of Christianity on television, radio, and secular university campuses. Over thirty years of ministry experience in the streets, courtrooms, prisons, and churches of America give him an unusual qualification to speak to the issues confronting the church in twenty-first century America.

Matthew 24-25 as Prophetic-Apocalyptic by Kennedy K. Ekeocha Pdf

Despite centuries of scholarly and popular engagement, much confusion still hangs over Jesus’ Olivet Discourse. There is no consensus on the nature and meaning of the disciples’ question in Matt 24:3. How is the temple’s fate related to the parousia or second coming of Jesus? Is the Great Tribulation past, present, or future? Will Christians be raptured to heaven? Should you rather prefer to be “left behind”? Combining inductive and discourse grammar approaches as bases for literary structure and analysis, this study is a holistic and compelling fresh interpretation of Jesus’ eschatological discourse that provides answers to these questions. The author shows that extant interpretive frameworks fail to adequately account for the biblical data. Moreover, and unlike the available treatments, the study sheds light on the discourse’s structural and theological function within Matthew’s Gospel as a whole and how it coheres with New Testament teaching in general.
