THERE is a passage in the Leviathan of Hobbes, which I will set before the reader, not without a definite purpose, as a sort of Introit to my Preface. It is, as follows: 'There is yet another fault in the discourses of some men; which may also be numbered amongst the sorts of madness; namely, that abuse of words, whereof I have spoken before in the fifth chapter, by the name of absurdity. And that is, when men speak such words, as put together, have in them no signification at all; but are fallen upon by some, through misunderstanding of the words they have received, and repeat by rote; by others from intention to deceive by obscurity. And this is incident to none but those, that converse in questions of matters incomprehensible, as the School-men; or in questions of abstruse philosophy. The common sort of men seldom speak insignificantly, and are, therefore, by those other egregious persons counted idiots. But to be assured their words are without anything correspondent to them in the mind, there would need some examples; which if any man require, let him take a School-man in his hands and see if he can translate any one chapter concerning any difficult point, as the Trinity; the Deity; the nature of Christ; transubstantiation; free-will, &c., into any of the modern tongues, so as to make the same intelligible; or into any tolerable Latin, such as they were acquainted withal, that lived when the Latin tongue was vulgar. What is the meaning of these words, The first cause does not necessarily inflow any thing into the second, by force of the essential subordination of the second causes, by which it may help it to work? They are the translation of the title of the sixth chapter of Suarez' first book, of the concourse, motion, and help, of God.(1) When men write whole volumes of such stuff are they not mad, or intend to make others so?'(2) A German writer of great and deserved reputation shall take up the fugue. 'The soul of the Scholastic Philosophy, ' writes Brucker, 'and the hinge on which it all turned, was not an attentive inquiry after Truth, undertaken without prejudice and made up of connected truths deduced from concordant Principles; but the empty and ambitious affectation of a sort of subtlety that made show of great intellectual acumen. Furnished with dialectic and metaphysical weapons, it was wont to dispute, with extremest stretching of the brain, about questions most difficult indeed and acute, but commendable neither by reason of their utility nor of their certitude; and would come down into the area for the purpose of carrying on its countless philosophical skirmishes, with the help of verbal disputes, of worthless mental abstractions, of axioms assumed at hap-hazard, of distinctions destitute of the smallest foundation, and of the horrors of a barbarous terminology.'(3) A little further on, the same author deplores its 'obscure ideas, ' -- 'words without meaning, ' -- 'barbarous terms which had a sort of frightful sound from their very clatter;' and describes its teaching as the 'hobgoblins of boys, ' -- 'empty clouds, ' -- 'an immense ocean of verbal disputes.'(4)

A First Book in Metaphysics (Classic Reprint) by Walter T. Marvin Pdf

Excerpt from A First Book in Metaphysics Lastly, I wished to adapt the book especially to the Oxford or preceptorial method of instruction. Accord ing to this method, the text-book and the lectures in class should serve to give a general View of the subject but should play a far less important part than the stu dent's independent reading and study. The results of this reading and study should be expressed in a weekly, or better fortnightly, essay submitted to the preceptor and afterward discussed with him in an informal con ference held preferably in his private study and attended by not more than three or four students. This enables the teacher to deal with his students as individuals and to vary greatly the amount and kind of reading he as signs to each. Some will do not only more difficult reading than others but three or four times the amount of reading. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Metaphysics (Classic Reprint) by Frederick J. E. Woodbridge Pdf

Excerpt from Metaphysics If, however, we turn from the inspiring title to the writ ings themselves, illusions about the supernatural character of metaphysics tend to disappear. There is, so we are told by the Stagirite, a science which investigates exist ence as existence and whatever belongs to existence as such. It is identical with none of the sciences which are defined less generally. For none of these professedly considers existence as existence, but each, restricting itself to some aspect of it, investigates the general aspect only incidentally, as do the mathematical sciences. The em phasis is thus put by Aristotle on fact and on nature, but it is put on fact and nature as we attempt to View them with at once the least and with the greatest restriction: with the least restriction, because we are invited to View nature in the light of her most comprehensive characters; with the greatest restriction, because we are invited to view her stripped of her wonderful diversity. Natural Philosophy by Le Roy C. Cooley Pdf

Excerpt from Natural Philosophy: For Common and High Schools The great aim of this little book is to present the most elementary facts of Natural. Philosophy, in such a way as to exercise the child constantly in observing phenomena and in drawing inferences from what he observes. Whenever a child is old enough to ask such questions, as, "What makes the thunder," or, "Where does the rain come from," or to exclaim "How pretty the clouds are this evening," it is old enough to begin the study of natural philosophy. When such questions are asked the mind is awake to see the phenomena of nature, and is ready to receive instruction. They show the presence of a desire to know, and the absence of power to learn without assistance; and in this way they lead us to believe that the time has come when the work of instruction should begin. Moreover, the study of natural philosophy is easy, and interesting to young pupils, because, when properly presented, it brings new sights to the eye, and new sounds the ear, in a way to be especially pleasant to children. The simplest experiments awaken enthusiasm in the mind of a child, and such as be may he able to repeat by himself are the source of the greatest delight. A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy (Classic Reprint) by Richard Green Parker Pdf

Excerpt from A School Compendium of Natural and Experimental Philosophy Ten years have elapsed since this work first appeared in permanent form from the hands of the stereotyper. During this time, the author has been gratified to learn that sixteen editions have been called for by the pub lic but this gratification has been mingled with re gret that he has been unable from time to time to make such improvements as he knew were needed, and which the progress of science, as well as a more extended ex perience, seemed imperiously to demand. He gladly avails himself of the present opportunity, afforded by the new publishers into whose hands it has fallen, to make such improvements as in his opinion will render it more worthy of the liberal patronage it has received; for although it is a long time since the author has had any pecuniary interest in the work, he hopes that it is not true that he has had no further solicitude. Metaphysics by Borden Parker Bowne Pdf

Excerpt from Metaphysics: A Study in First Principles Philosophy, as a special form of mental activity, seeks to answer these two questions: How is knowledge possible? What is the true nature of reality? The first question deals with the knowing subject and his relation to the Oh jcet. The aim is to give an exposition and a theory of the knowing process and to unfold its implications. The sec ond question deals with the nature of the object viewed as a thing in itself. The first question belongs to the theory of knowledge; the second belongs to metaphysics. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Outlines of Natural Philosophy by Joseph David Everett Pdf

Excerpt from Outlines of Natural Philosophy: For Schools and General Readers This book is intended to supply the widely felt want of a work at once easy enough for a class reading-book and precise enough for a text-book. Great pains have been taken to make every statement as plain as possible, and to put every sentence into the form which will render it easiest to understand at first hearing. Familiar language whenever available has been preferred to the use of technical terms, as it is not desirable to encumber begin ners with any names beyond what they need for con veniently expressing their ideas. Algebraic formulae have been altogether excluded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Outlines of Metaphysics (Classic Reprint) by John S. Mackenzie Pdf

Excerpt from Outlines of Metaphysics The chief difficulty of such an attempt lies in the necessity of combining two requirements that appear almost incompatible with one another. A text-book that is to be of any real value to the student must be alive. To point to the various problems as if they were speci mens in a museum, would obviously be to fail entirely in the object that is aimed at -viz., that of bringing out the vital relationships of the various points that have to be considered. On the other hand, a text-book of this kind must not aim at superseding, in the minds of those who use it, the works to which it is an intro duction. I have kept both these points steadily in view; but I can hardly hope that I have been completely successful in avoiding the dangers to which I refer. My aim at least has been to produce a book which is a living unity within itself, and which yet points continu ally outwards to the larger life of the speculative thought of the world.
