Image, Eye and Art in Calvino by Birgitte Grundtvig,Martin L. McLaughlin,Lene Waage Petersen Pdf

Few recent writers have been as interested in the cross-over between texts and visual art as Italo Calvino (1923-85). Involved for most of his life in the publishing industry, he took as much interest in the visual as in the textual aspects of his own and other writers' books. In this volume twenty international Calvino experts, including Barenghi, Battistini, Belpoliti, Hofstadter, Ricci, Scarpa and others, consider the many facets of the interplay between the visual and textual in Calvino's works, from the use of colours in his fiction to the influence of cartoons, from the graphic qualities of the book covers themselves to the significance of photography and landscape in his fiction and non-fiction. The volume is appropriately illustrated with images evoked by Calvino's major texts.

Squeezing Minds From Stones by Karenleigh A. Overmann,Frederick L. Coolidge Pdf

Cognitive archaeology is a relatively new interdisciplinary science that uses cognitive and psychological models to explain archeological artifacts like stone tools, figurines, and art. Squeezing Minds From Stones is a collection of essays from early pioneers in the field, like archaeologists Thomas Wynn and Iain Davidson, and evolutionary primatologist William McGrew, to 'up and coming' newcomers like Shelby Putt, Ceri Shipton, Mark Moore, James Cole, Natalie Uomini, and Lana Ruck. Their essays address a wide variety of cognitive archaeology topics, including the value of experimental archaeology, primate archaeology, the intent of ancient tool makers, and how they may have lived and thought.

Broken Arrow of Time by James G. Bloyd Pdf

This fine example of critical writing examines the arrow of time as it is conceived by theoretical physicists. Exploring areas in science from quantum theory and relativity to cognitive science and philosophy, the book appeals to a more classical realism, approaching a work tempered for the conservative scientist while remaining provocative enough to challenge any reader. The arguments are build upon currently accepted theory, however, the radical conclusion reveals a surprisingly consistent view between classical and modern physics, illustrating how classical physics can be reasonably advanced, instead of replaced, to account for contemporary theory. To accomplish this coherent view, all that is required is a shift in the way we think about time. By simply demystifying the arrow of time, we can begin to see how the inexplicable nature of modern physics, such as “quantum weirdness,” is not only comprehensible but is exactly what we would expect from our theories. Though this conclusion is counter to the consensus in the physics of the last century, the book is highly persuasive. Indeed, it may just compel every reader to rethink the predicament in today’s theoretical physics.

The Eighth Arrow by Donald N. Panther-Yates Pdf

THE TIHANAMA Nation has probably escaped your attention. That was their plan. One of the last migratory tribes in North America, they range from the Great Lakes to the Florida Panhandle. Their language is an isolate, unrelated to the languages of surrounding nations. You may have heard it in the song "Wendeyaho," commonly but mistakenly called the Cherokee Morning Song. And yet, as a trading people who interacted annually with dozens of other nations between the Mississippi River and the Appalachians, their story and traditions provide the "missing link" that will change your understanding of and appreciation for the depth of Native American wisdom teachings. We believe THE EIGHTH ARROW is the most comprehensive look at these people, their language and traditions yet published.

Change, the Arrow of Time, and Divine Eternity in Light of Relativity Theory by Daniel Saudek Pdf

This book has two aims; first, to provide a new account of time's arrow in light of relativity theory; second, to explain how God, being eternal, relates to our world, marked as it is by change and time. In part one, Saudek argues that time is not the expansive universal 'wave' that is appears to be, but nor are we living in an unchanging block. Rather, time is real but local: there are infinitely many arrows of time in the universe, each with their own fixed past and open future. This model is based on the ontology of substances which can exist in different states, marked by different properties. On this basis, a derivation of temporal precedence and of the asymmetry between the fixed past and the open future is provided. Time's arrow is thus 'attached' to substances, and is therefore a local rather than global phenomenon, though by no means an illusory or merely subjective one. In part two, this model is then applied to the perennial questions concerning the relationship between divine eternity and the temporal world: How can my future choices be free if God already knows what I will do? Can God act if He is not in time? Through the lens of relativity theory, such questions are shown to appear in a completely new light. The book combines insights from theoretical physics with ancient and contemporary philosophy into a unique synthesis, broaching a wealth of key issues including the arrow of time, the evolution of the cosmos, and a physics-based defence of eternalism in philosophical theology.
