The Flower Yard by Arthur Parkinson Pdf

The Times Best Gardening Books of the Year 2021 'The Flower Yard is simply gorgeous. Inspirational, sumptuous and packed with refreshingly down-to-earth advice. I love this book.' Nigel Slater 'The Kew-trained king of the small-space garden.' Guardian Arthur Parkinson's town garden is like a path of pots, a tiny, exposed stage on bricks. Despite its small size, a flower-filled jungle in Venetian tones is grown here each year, in defiance of urbanisation. The plants act like drapes, closing gently as their growth engulfs the front door, from either side of the path, to the buzz of precious bees. This is gardening done entirely in pots, yet on a grand scale that will inspire anyone who wants their doorstep or patio to be a glamorous and lively canvas that nurtures them visually and mentally. From jewel scatterings of crocus, flocks of parrot tulips and scented sweet peas to galaxies of single dahlias, towering giraffes of amaryllises grown inside for winter and endless vases of cut blooms through the seasons. With his bantam hens at his feet, Arthur shares his life, knowledge, flair and influences for planting creatively, all of which combine to create a space that's rich in ever-changing colour and life.

Dahlias and Their Cultivation by J. B. Wroe Pdf

Excerpt from Dahlias and Their Cultivation: A Practical Treatise on the History, Culture, and Propagation of the Show, Fancy, Cactus, Pompon, and Single Dahlias for Exhibition and Garden Decoration; With Hints on Staging and Judging the Flowers, Also Selections of Varieties for All Pruposes Whatever may be said in depreciation of the double dahlia in the matter of lack of refinement, there is one thing certain, it is pre-eminently a show flower. It is, in comparison to the rose or carnation, what the ruddy-faced country maiden is to the Venus de Milo; but its mechanical symmetry, so distasteful to the artistic feeling, is in many a dahlia judge's estimation a point in its favour. Its large size, rich and varied colours, together with its comparative adaptability to a smoky atmosphere, make it a great favourite amongst dahlia showers in the North. It will not be long either before it again pushes itself into fashion. The advent of the cactus variety has, however, considerably annulled the artistic strictures of the objectors to the double dahlia. For some time after its introduction the cactus form was looked upon as an abortion, devoid of "work," form, and finish; but the wonderful improvements brought about by the florist have now worn down all prejudice, and it stands to-day a flower of grace and beauty, either for decoration, or for tests of cultural skill on the show board.
