The Moghul Hedonist by Farzana Moon Pdf

Jahangir, the fourth Moghul emperor of India, was a scholar and a naturalist. While he devoted his time to observing the flora and fauna, his empress Nur Jahan ruled the Emperor and the empire. The Emperoras passion for beauty in nature lured him to Kashmir five times, away from the warring intrigues, during which time the Persians conquered Kandahar. The gardens of Kashmir, some built by Nur Jahan and others restored by her, became the Emperoras retreat and paradise. Jahangiras pilgrimage to Kabul guided him on his journey toward death, literally and metaphorically. aAll is vain, fleeting and perishable. In the twinkling of an eye we shall see the enchantress, Fate, who enslaves the world and its votaries. Seizes the throat of another and another victim. And so exposed is man to be trodden down by the calamities of life, that one can almost be persuaded to affirm that he never had existed. This world, the end of which is destined to be miserable, can scarcely be worth the risk of so much useless violence.a Jahangir.

Carpet-making is one of this tumultuous region's few constants, an art form that transcends religious and political turmoil. Part travelogue and part exploration into the meaning and worth of these mystical artifacts, The Root of Wild Madder presents practical information about carpets while exploring the artistic, religious, and cultural complexities of these enigmatic lands.

Music, Culture and Identity in the Muslim World by Kamal Salhi Pdf

In contrast to many books on Islam that focus on political rhetoric and activism, this book explores Islam's extraordinarily rich cultural and artistic diversity, showing how sound, music and bodily performance offer a window onto the subtleties and humanity of Islamic religious experience. Through a wide range of case studies from West Asia, South Asia and North Africa and their diasporas - including studies of Sufi chanting in Egypt and Morocco, dance in Afghanistan, and "Muslim punk" on-line - the book demonstrates how Islam should not be conceived of as being monolithic or monocultural, how there is a large disagreement within Islam as to how music and performance should be approached, such disagreements being closely related to debates about orthodoxy, secularism, and moderate and fundamental Islam, and how important cultural activities have been, and continue to be, for the formation of Muslim identity.

Greed Unbound: Official Misdeeds in Political Economies of Kin Groups and Chiefdoms (Volume 1) by Eugene L Mendonsa, Ph.D. Pdf

The first volume of Greed Unbound is about the ways elites siphoned off value from workers in the early Neolithic farming and herding societies. In the broadest terms, it highlights the consequences of greed in officialdom, the offices of kin groups, cults, secret societies, and chiefdoms. Greed in all of these groups has consistently led to severe inequality. Prior to the Agricultural Revolution inequality had been held in check, being restricted to such things as respect for the elderly and male chauvinism. In the mild inequality of the Long Paleolithic, no one person or faction could siphon value from the labor of others. But all that changed once food was stored in farming societies, allowing greedy chiefs to exploit the common people-in stark contrast to the egalitarian nature of life before the development of stored wealth. With the change, exploitation flourished, as did warfare and mystical institutions that functioned to mislead and appease the masses.

Western Representations of the Muslim Woman by Mohja Kahf Pdf

Veiled, secluded, submissive, oppressed—the "odalisque" image has held sway over Western representations of Muslim women since the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century. Yet during medieval and Renaissance times, European writers portrayed Muslim women in exactly the opposite way, as forceful queens of wanton and intimidating sexuality. In this illuminating study, Mohja Kahf traces the process through which the "termagant" became an "odalisque" in Western representations of Muslim women. Drawing examples from medieval chanson de geste and romance, Renaissance drama, Enlightenment prose, and Romantic poetry, she links the changing images of Muslim women to changes in European relations with the Islamic world, as well as to changing gender dynamics within Western societies.
