The Multicultural Dimension Of The National Curriculum by Anna King,Michael Reiss Pdf

Given the National Curriculum Council's failure to issue any formal guidance on the subject, multicultural education is becoming increasingly marginalized and left to individual schools. This book provides guidance and advice to schools on issues of racial equality and cultural diversity. It helps teachers, managers and governors implement the requirements and expectations of new educational legislation since the 1988 Education Reform Act and its associated non-statutory advice and guidance.; Within a whole school curriculum framework, chapters provide analysis and practical guidance for each subject area of the National Curriculum. With responsibility for multicultural education resting largely on individual schools, this book sets out to aid schools of all kinds, primary, secondary, grant maintained and LEA, to ensure that issues of racial equality and cultural diversity are addressed throughout the whole curriculum.; It is aimed at teachers at all levels, Heads of Education Departments, Mentors, Governors, Advisers, INSET course tutors, students on PGCE, BEd.MEd. courses and those doing a BA in Education.

Multicultural Children in the Early Years by Peter Woods,Mari Boyle,Nick Hubbard Pdf

How do multicultural children and their parents experience the very beginning of their school careers? How do teachers mediate the demands of the educational system, and how do the children adapt? What kind of access to the National Curriculum is offered to multicultural children? Originally published in 1999, the authors answer these questions by drawing on two years’ intensive research in three multi-ethnic institutions. They explore teachers’ values and beliefs and how they attempt to put them into practice. They describe how, at times, teachers were constrained to get things done because of pressures operating on them, but at other times, taught creatively in a way particularly relevant to the children’s concerns and cultures. The authors studied the children’s experiences on their transition into school, and argue that they were inducted into not only a general pupil role, but also one based on an anglicised model of pupil. Opportunities for learning which children found most meaningful came notably from free play, but these became gradually more limited as they engaged with the National Curriculum. These young children were forming complex identities as they sought to respond to the varying influences operating them. Their parents saw a cultural divide opening up between home and school. Many suggestions for practice and policy are made in the course of the book and are still relevant today.

Muslim Communities in England 1962-90 by Jed Fazakarley Pdf

This book analyses Muslim integration into English society from the 1960s to the 1990s. The author argues that, contrary to common narratives built around a sudden transformation during the Rushdie affair, religious identity was of great importance to English Muslims throughout this period. The study also considers what the experiences of Muslim communities tell us about British multiculturalism. With chapters which consider English Muslim experiences in education, employment, and social services, British multiculturalism is shown to be a capacious artifice, variegated across and within localities and resistant to periodization. It is understood as positing separate ethnic communities, and serving these communities with special provisions aimed ultimately at integration. It is argued moreover to have developed its own momentum, limiting the efficacy of 21st century “backlashes” against it. Muslim Communities in England 1962-90 will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including sociology, history and politics.

National School Policy (1996) by Jim Docking Pdf

Published in 1996, this book presents a broad overview of the development of educational policy for schools in England and Wales since Margaret Thatcher’s Conservative administration took office in 1979. It reviews the separate strands of education policy as it relates to curriculum, equal educational opportunities, diversity and choice and management policies, and combines these with an overall appraisal of the direction of the schools system in the two decades before it was written. The book thereby provides a comprehensive text for undergraduate and postgraduate students which raises issues for debate and includes support material for discussion. It will also be of interest to school governors, educationalists and all those who care about the direction of educational change.
