The Muse at Play by Jan Kwapisz,David Petrain,Mikolaj Szymanski Pdf

In May 2011, a conference on riddles and word games in Greek and Latin poetry took place at the Institute of Classical Studies of the University of Warsaw. The conference was intended as an open forum where specialists working in different fields of classical studies could meet to discuss the varied manifestations of riddles and other technopaegnia - both terms being understood broadly to encompass the full range of play with language in classical antiquity, in keeping with the use made of the two terms in ancient and early modern theoretical discussions. This volume offers revised versions of the papers presented during the conference. Contributions by scholars from Europe and the USA treat a number of interconnected topics, including: ancient and modern attempts to formulate a definition of the riddle; poetic games at Greek symposia; experimentation with language in late classical poetry; riddles in the book cultures of the Hellenistic age and late antiquity; the functions of word games carved in stone, written on papyrus, or inscribed on the wall as graffiti; authors famed for their obscurity, such as Heraclitus and Lycophron; wordplay in Neo-Latin poetry; oracles, magic squares, pattern poetry, palindromes and acrostichs.

Yea, Alabama! The Uncensored Journal of the University of Alabama (Volume 3 - 1901 through 1926) by David M. Battles Pdf

The University of Alabama (UA) is one of the most prominent universities in the US. Volume One of this series explored UA’s birth, formative years, its burning by Union soldiers, and its rebirth in 1871. Volume Two noted the adolescent years of the school, rebellion by the students against the military system of government, the rise of a student culture via the admission of women, and a nascent men’s sports program. This third volume explores rising enrollment and a new style of student governance. The book investigates how UA dealt with student smoking, cursing, and hazing. It covers how UA became nationally respected academically, the rise of a successful sports program, the first use of the phrase “Crimson Tide,” the history of the Million Dollar Band and how “Yea, Alabama” became the school fight song, the UA/Auburn rift, and the UA response to WWI and to the women’s rights movement.

Excerpt from The Tragic Muse I say, Biddy, why should we sit moping here all day? Come and take a turn about with me. His younger sister, while he got up, leaned forward a little, looking round her, but she gave, for the moment, no further sign of complying with his invitation. Where shall we find you, then, if Peter comes 2 inquired the other Miss Dormer, making no movement at all. I dare say Peter won't come. He'll leave us here to cool our heels. The Tenth Muse (Classic Reprint) by Edward Thomas Pdf

Excerpt from The Tenth Muse It is plain enough that he loved country things, for a dozen books show it; but it is scarcely credible with what pure intensity this passion burned in him. The quietness of his writing, the irony, the acute wit, the never embarrassed penetration of his insight, the unexcitable strength of his mind, might mislead one into thinking him a man of cool tastes and desires. He was not. His physical qualities and appetites were powerful and fine; for all desirable physical as for all desirable spiritual things he simply hungered and thirsted; it was only his restraint and reserve that deceived. His physical presence itself was powerful and fine; his friends found him enviably handsome, although perhaps I ought to say that admiration never permitted me to think whether he was or was not. Nothing could be quieter than his eye, stiller than his body; at times his passiveness seemed indolent and complete. Yet he was the most restless of men, impatient of confinement, a wanderer who found his main delight in turning homeward, loving motion for its physical activity and for its perpetual freshening of the eye. He would go long distances for short visits, and use incredible care in order to spend an hour with a friend. In his desire of friends, again, the strength of his nature was shown. He had great capacities and great loyalties; the loss of a friend, if it unluckily occurred, through misunderstanding or the mere wryness of another's mind, hurt and oppressed him. Santa by Federico Gamboa Pdf

This enduring classic of Mexican literature traces the path to ruination of a country girl, Santa, who moves to Mexico City after she is impregnated and abandoned by her lover and subsequently shunned by her family. Once in the city, Santa turns to prostitution and soon gains prominence as Mexico City's most sought-after courtesan. Despite the opportunities afforded by her success, including the chance to quit prostitution, Santa is propelled by her personal demons toward her ultimate downfall. This evocative novel--justly famous for its vividly detailed depiction of the cityscape and the city's customs, social interactions, and political activities--assumed singular importance in Mexican popular culture after its original publication in 1903. The book inspired Mexico's first "talkie" and several other film adaptations, a music score, a radio series, a television soap opera, and a pornographic comic book. Naturalist writer Federico Gamboa, who was also a lawyer and politician, reveals much about Mexican mores and culture at the start of the twentieth century and beyond, from expectations regarding gender roles to the myth of the corrupting and decadent city. In describing how Santa is at the mercy of social problems beyond her control, Gamboa provides a rich historical portrayal of widespread conditions in the years leading to the Mexican Revolution.
