The Mystery of Being: Faith & reality by Gabriel Marcel Pdf

The Mystery of Being contains the most systematic exposition of the philosophical thought of Gabriel Marcel, a convert to Catholicism and the most distinguished twentieth-century exponent of Christian existentialism. Its two volumes are the Gifford lectures which Marcel delivered in Aberdeen, Scotland, in 1949 and 1950. Marcel's work fundamentally challenges most of the major positions of the atheistic existentialists (Sartre, Beauvoir, Camus), especially their belief in an absurd, meaningless, godless universe. These volumes deal with almost all of the major themes of Marcel's thought: the nature of philosophy, our broken world, man's deep ontological need for being, i.e., for permanent eternal values, our incarnate bodily existence, primary and secondary reflection, participation, being in situation, the identity of the human self, intersubjectivity, mystery and problem, faith, hope, and the reality of God, and immortality. The Faith by Louis A. Marini Pdf

Faith is a word frequently used these days as we continue to struggle through a pandemic that took the lives of over eight hundred thousand Americans and rising. Amid unsolved questions posed to the world of medicine in the throes of political and social unrest, the darkness of this nightmare has left many with a growing skepticism in the leadership of many traditional institutions of Church and State. Why are people so concerned over the existential issues of life and faith during these unprecedented times where the world seems to have gone topsy-turvy? Louis Marini suggests that faith has always been a multidimensional reality inherent in people’s lives. People have always aspired to faith to unite a nation in times of distress and social unrest. The human act of believing is the first step to walking in faith. Believing is always “believing in” another human being. Faith always necessitates and is sustained only in relationships whether faith is solely based upon human interaction or seeking communion with the Divine. These reflections open the possibility for discussions that faith is not just a human phenomenon but a natural gift that may transition into a relationship with the Divine. Faith, which is fundamentally a human reality, can become a divine mystery. This realization hopefully can console and heal us from the scars left from the angst of these uncertain times.

Tragic Humanity and Hope by Pius Ojara SJ Pdf

With insights into the thought of Gabriel Marcel, Tragic Humanity and Hope recognizes that in our age scientific knowing is becoming a dominant form of knowledge. The leadership, influence, growth, and gravitational center of human existence depend, it seems, on scientific knowledge. As a result, we live in an information age that prizes production and immediate satisfaction but devalues the cultivation of wisdom. We risk diminishing the significance of sapiential knowing to deal with the immensely complex and intricate domains of human relationality. Furthermore, inquiry into moral discernment methods expands, becoming more diverse; yet, scholarly conversations that engage the vital exigencies as founding moral sensibility seem noticeably insufficient. Tragic Humanity and Hope strives to overcome this lack. But Ojara also seeks ethical groundings that exceed the language of pragmatic utility and aesthetic preference. Foundations of morality cannot exclude questions of the common good and shared moral obligations that free people to reach out to one another with hopes and memories that endow life with shared meaning. Through continuity and cohesion that the interlacing of scientific, sapiential, and moral knowing bring, life becomes a marvelous expression of light, joy, and fervor.

Constructing Constructive Theology by Jason A. Wyman Jr. Pdf

To date, constructive theology hasn’t been viewed or conceptualized as a movement or trend in theology on its own as a whole. Questions arise as to what constructive theology is, where it came from, why it considers itself “constructive,” and why constructive is something different from the ways in which theology has been done in the past. This book traces the overall historical arc of constructive theology, from proto-movement through the present. Inklings of constructive theology emerged well before it began to take any formalized shape. At the same time, an important shift occurred when a group of theologians decided to create the Workgroup on Constructive Theology. Further, even as the workgroup continues to work collectively, producing textbooks, statements, and methodologies concerning theology, many theologians who are not part of the workgroup or may not even know it exists have adopted the moniker of “constructive theologian.” The book also considers the term “constructive” itself, offering possible reasons and historical contexts that led to this distinction being made in contrast to “systematic” theology and its subcategories. Constructive theology speaks to a very specific, historically situated emergence in the academy generally and in theology’s attempts to engage those shifts specifically.
